Arthur's brain kicked into high gear as he finally saw the threat coming but unfortunately the body could not move as fast as the mind. Arthur failed to anticipate the sudden movement of the zombie general.

When Arthur realized the zombie general had gotten too close for comfort, it was already too late. The staff was already coming his way.

Arthur's body arched backwards as the young man pulled in his body and the top as well as the bottom of his body extended outwards, forming a 'C' shape. Arthur moved his body to match the part of the body the general was striking.

The zombie general was aiming at Arthur's midriff. Since Arthur was unable to jump back entirely, at the very least, he should move part of his body.

The tip of the staff grazed the fabric of Arthur's clothes. It tore a hole through it. That was how fast the general was waving the staff that even a blunt object had the ability to cut a hole through Arthur's sturdy jacket.

If Arthur had reacted one second later, the staff would have slammed directly into Arthur. Based on the force that cut through the wind, Arthur had no trouble believing if that hit had made contact, at least 3 of his ribs would be shattered.

The staff carried forward on its momentum. The movement of Arthur's body swung the lamp that was tied to the young man's waist. The lamp flung upwards and it fell victim to the zombie general's staff.

Arthur heard the sound of glass shattering and something slick splashed on his skin and on the floor. In the middle of the commotion, the already small piece of moonlight smashed into even smaller pieces and instantly the light around Arthur dimmed. Since the size decreased, the glow from the piece of the moon became less intense.

If the fire from the seal was not still burning, the whole throne room would have fallen into darkness. Then again, that might not have put Arthur at full disadvantage. With his sensitive hearing, perhaps it was Arthur who might 'see' clearer in the darkness.

Arthur's heart arrested with the feeling of consternation. He was inches away from serious injury and definite death. There was no way he was going to survive if the staff swing from the zombie general connected.

Even so, Arthur told himself to be careful as he slipped away from that close brush with death. Since the lamp broke, the oil spilled to the ground and if Arthur did not watch his step, he might slip and fall, exposing his weakness to his enemy for exploitation.

Arthur managed to roll away to safety. However, he did not let his guard down. Based on how the battle had gone so far, Arthur had a fairly good grasp of the zombie general's fighting style. He was a relentless fighter, giving his opponent no chance at all to rest and take a breather. There was no opening for you to catch your breath and he would come after you until you were dead.

Arthur had no idea whether that was something favored by the general when he was still alive or a tactic that he had adapted to after his zombification. Either way, Arthur knew that was not the end of the assault.

He perked up his ears to listen to the movement of the zombie general. To Arthur's surprise, there was no reaction coming from the general. The enemy seemed to have halted in his aggression.

This anomalous reaction caused the young man to frown as he lifted his head to observe the situation.

The fire had burned off some of the flesh on the zombie general, exposing the white bones underneath. Rotten pieces of meat that were hanging from the general's body were seared by the flames and there was a disgusting smell that filled the air.

The fire also burned off the rust that was covering the armour. They gleamed, reflecting the light of the flames. The explosive seal did not stop the zombie general by one bit, if anything, the fire had increased the scare factor to his appearance.

Arthur saw the zombie general flinch and put a stop to his aggression as he pulled away from the oil that was pooling on the ground. This was a surprise discovery for the young man and soon the wheels in his mind started to turn.

'Why did the zombie general act that way around the pool of splashed oil?' Arthur saw the zombie general assume an aggressive pose as he side-stepped around the pool of oil as he readied himself to begin another barrage of attacks. Arthur noticed the sparks from the ember that was still stuck to the zombie general.

'Is it because he was afraid that close proximity to the oil might cause the embers on his body to fire up and combust?' Then Arthur soon vetoed that idea. 'That can't be it. The general has no reason to be afraid of that. The explosive seal has left zero damage on the general so even if the fire sparks up again, he will be equally unaffected.'

The zombie general was getting ready to pounce at Arthur. The young man needed to think quick and fast. 'Then, what is the reason to explain his curious behavior earlier? If it is not fire, then… could it be…'

Arthur was hit by an inspiration. He examined the zombie general from the top of his helmet to the bottom of his feet. He also noticed when the oil started to seep towards him, the general made a conscious step away from it.

That was as good of a confirmation Arthur needed for the speculation he had in his mind.

Arthur gritted his teeth in determination. His life hinged on the accuracy of his observation.

Suddenly, the young man turned away from the battle and raced down the corridor that he came in from.
