All of them were startled by the sudden opening of the door. "Miss May…" John murmured as he was looking at the lunch boxes May had brought and his facial muscles flinched.
He could not explain it well, but he felt something was weird about May. He heard that one of these two men had saved her in the ship, so he looked at them in a scrutinizing manner as he assessed each of them attentively. It couldn't be the older one, who looked old enough to be her uncle. "Oh, hi John, what are you doing here?" asked May plainly as she prepared the dining table. Both Cobra and Riley were looking at John with questioning eyes.
John scratched his head and quickly answered, "I heard one of them saved you, so I wanted to meet him and thank him… By the way, my name is John. I'm one of Mrs. Lim's bodyguards and I'm pretty close to Mrs. Lim's friends, including miss May here."
John extended his hand for a handshake which Cobra accepted as he mentioned his name.
Riley gave him a nod and said, "I'm Riley." His mouth twisted when he felt the exaggeratedly tight handshake that John gave him before he let his hand go. 'What is wrong with this dude?' he frowned but did not bother to ponder further.
May's eyes brightened as she proudly narrated Riley's tale of heroism when he saved her from a flying bullet. And she followed it up with a dramatic hand gesture as she goaded, "I'm sure you are no match for him, John. He is really good and fast, like those that we usually see in Kung Fu movies…"
John's face darkened as he glared at Riley and said, "I doubt that. Maybe we should give him the chance to prove it some other time if he could truly be my match…"
May burst out with laughter as she said in a derisive manner, "John, please… Let's stop that arrogance, I'm telling you he's really good." Then she gestured for him to sit with them as she added, "Since you're already here, why don't you come and eat with us? Come, let's all eat together. I prepared enough food…"
Riley was feeling uncomfortable with the look that this man called John was throwing him every now and then, especially when Miss May would particularly take good care of him by putting some food on his plate.
But he felt really touched by her gesture and murmured, "Thank you." It was the first time he was treated this kindly, so he unconsciously stared at May with admiration. His stare was interrupted by John when he was suddenly coughing heavily as if he was choking.
May quickly handed John a glass of water as she patted his back and shook her head, "Tsk tsk tsk, John… I know my cooking is that good, but you should still slow down when you eat it." John saw that and his nostrils flared up from jealousy. "Uhm, how long will the two of you stay here at the headquarters?" he asked, trying to get Riley's attention on him and away from May.
"Until the investigation is finished, according to Field Marshal Chan," Cobra answered instead. Riley and him had both been staying in a safe house inside the military base.
"What are your plans after this is all over?" May asked both of them, out of curiosity, but she looked at Riley particularly. She was more interested in hearing Riley's plan.
"I would like to join the Military and Field Marshal Chan has encouraged me to do so, regardless of my age. He said age doesn't matter. Only my passion to serve the country does," Cobra explained, to which May and John nodded in agreement.
May looked at Riley, smiling as she asked, "What about you Riley? What are your plans once you're released?"
Riley was flustered when May stared at him intently. He was blushing when he answered, "I don't know yet. I don't have anyone or anything to return to. I will just look for a decent job and start a new life…"
May's eyes suddenly brightened as she suggested, "Then you should work for me!"
