?Ten Minutes Prior?

Malnor's group too were engaged in a battle in which he also lost two members.

Given what took place the previous night this was an even more detrimental blow taking into consideration Karr's death.

Which meant squad Malnor was now down to two members including Malnor.

In all honesty, he never thought these mercenaries would be such skilled fighters especially the woman with dreadlocks.

Sarabi had smashed her spike maze atop the ninth stage cultivator's head just a mere seconds before. Then kicking him in the chest ridding her mace of the hinderance, totally dismissively.

" I thought those from the Dark Abylis Sect would be elites. Turn out this was an exaggeration." She uttered afterward.

The enraged Malnor tried to calm himself finding a means to handle what had unfolded. Unlike Vulture who simply used the bandits' numbers to expend the qi of Ava's squad, Sarabi was more meticulous. She made use of these smaller pawns only allowing them to sneak attack their target or as a means of distraction.

This was the strategy used to kill the Ninth stage qi condensation cultivator. A mere second had been the difference between life and death. Sadly fate had chosen death in his case.

" Retreat!" Malnor yelled to his vice squad leader Atto who quickly nodded his head in response. In a flash, they sprinted off but Sarabi would have none of it.

BAM! BAM!

A smelting hot mace made cracks before the departing two. Her whole body seared in a heat which caused the droplet of rain to become puffs of steam with each touch of her skin.

" Who told you there was an exit? The only thing departing will be your souls!"

Sarabi uttered with an overbearing tone, as her killing intent could be seen. Laughter could be heard from the two and it was Malnor. This was heard when someone had reached the point where their rage was so pent up it burst through an emotional barrier. He then calmly stated,

" You really are trying to push me aren't you?"

Swish!

his double-headed battle-ax was once again summoned to his hands as he cleaved at Sarabi before him.

Clang! clang!

Heavy iron smashed against each other as Sarabi's spiky mace made contact with his. The force of the impact sent the two flying in opposite directions. Unfortunately for Malnor, he was sent into the path of a mercenary whose foot was encased in earth.

Bam!

He smashed his earthen foot to the back of Malnor who coughed up blood after the impact.

Soon Malnor found himself battling two foes and it was the same for Atto who was being hit around like a pinball by the last two mercenaries.

" Atto, we'll die if we stay here. Let's make a run for it. You know what happens next."

Malnor hurriedly spoke to Atto who nodded his head knowing very well what he meant.

Soon a loud bellow was heard coming from the three nightjar demon beasts that took to then darken skies before the battle began.

Their bellow's sent soundwave which caused all to hold their ears. Apparently their sound attack had the desired effect as it caught Sarabi and her men off guard.

POSH!

Malnor did something bizarre as he flew five canisters which he had summoned to his hand. They oozed black gas where ever they went.

The fumes were so pungent and opaque not only could Sarabi and her men not see but it also caused a reflex dry heave.

Ching!

A chopping sound could be heard before something clattered into the foot of Sarabi below. When the object barely became visible she saw the head of one of the three ninth stage cultivators under her reign.

"Fuck!" Sarabi yelled as she saw the scene that unfolded before her. However, she quickly reacted launching into the air muttering under her breath.

?Elemental Art ( Wind) Push ?

with a wooshing motion, all the gas was blown away but neither Malnor nor Otto could be seen.

" Think you can escape, keep dreaming. You're only delaying the inevitable."

As Sarabi spoke five demon beast red wolves were seen at her feet. Within her hands were partial clothing ripped from both Atto and Malnor.

She then motioned to the beasts who sniffed for a few seconds before becoming charged,

" Find them my precious pups then you can rip them to shreds when I am through."

Arh-ooooo!

The five red wolves scampered off excitedly followed by Sarabi and her men. Ahead of them Malnor and Atto were in bad shape as they aimed to swiftly traverse the land.

Knowing he needed assistance immediately he hoped beyond hope that two of the other squads were in a better position.

As he attempting to press the buttons to the side he heard a desperate cry which sank his heart.

" Squad Ava in need of reinforcement, Immediately!"

?Twenty minutes prior?

" I need not say anything more inspiring. Let's do what needs to be done, squad. You three remember to work as a team covering for each other's weakness."

Malgrey spoke to Cameron, Luke, and Lovren. Who without objection nodded their heads though they felt they were singled out due to them being viewed as the weaker of the seven.

He then nodded to Niesha as there was no need for words between the two before looking to Taf and May saying,

" Taf I assume you'll ensure the safety of May."

This May found amusing when she heard it but understood why they assumed she was in need of protection.

Though she is viewed with talent after what had unfolded in Marvel City they never would have thought it possible for her this quickly to have battle strength exceeding the eight stage.

Neither May nor Taf corrected him nonetheless. To her side, Taf had a pondering look as he assessed below before replying,

" Squad leader I'll interject a bit. Perhaps it's best not to charge in just yet. Doesn't something seem off?"

The others became startled at his words as they looked below seeing a gang of at least thirty bandits at varying levels looting through three caravans while the merchants were tied to the side.

Malgrey and the other looked for anything suspicious but they saw nothing inspiring a halt in operation.

" There isn't anything out of the norm they are doing what bandits are known to do." Malgrey responded.

To which Taf nodded his head and looked to his side at May. He was curious to know if she saw what he did. Like a teacher assessing his pupil he asked,

" Do you see, May?"

May looked keenly as she knew Taf was not one to engage in idle arguments. If he says something appears strange, more than likely it is.

Soon she saw something peculiar and it dawned on her Taf's realization.

" They're acting like regular bandits. That is what's off about the situation. If they were as meticulous with their planning as previously  inferred this is out of character." Taf smile as she continued,

"Knowing our presence is now within Starlight City, would they callously act as they did before? There is such a thing as too good to be true."

Listening to May's words it did seem peculiar that all had unfolded so beautifully. Those men below did they seem like the planning type?

Her analysis did indeed appear plausible. Taf nodded as it seems their training in deductive observation was indeed yielding dividends.

" Ok, this is my suggestion. Before we charge into battle, let's observe a bit.

Then we will test the waters after being given an updated status by squad Ava and Squad Malnor." Taf stated as he continued,

"Right now we have the advantage and from what can be seen of the bandits their threat is minimal to the squad. Of the group, only one seemingly is at the ninth stage."

They all had to admit he spoke some truth while Taf ended by saying,

"Meaning possibly there are more to come or perhaps we are one of the more fortunate squads. Which stands to reason that Ava or Malnor have bitten off more than they can chew. Therefore they might be in need of our assistance."

Taf temporarily words of wisdom Had Neisha behind him nodded her head in agreement.

After Taf's spot on account of the previous night's proceedings. With Kathy's investigation, how could Malgrey object to anything Taf deduced?

" We'll proceed as you see fit."

He hurriedly agreed which the trio of Lovren, Luke, and Camron found odd.

Why did it feel in some way that Taf's status within the squad had somewhat shifted? It was as though what he stated would not be questioned.

They felt as though this did not come from his abomination tag but true respect.

There they surveyed the activities below and nothing much unfolded. Five minutes had passed, then ten and fifteen.

For anyone with any seeming patience, this did not appear to be that much time, but there was someone called Lovren.

" Taf obviously there is no seeming underlined trap. How about you let us do what we actually came here to do? This a mission after all."

Lovren was eager to earn some merits knowing fully well in due time perhaps some member might have to leave the squad which had surpassed the required quota. It obviously wouldn't be Malgrey, Niesha, or Taf.

Then there was May who though he saw as weaker, with her potential there was no way she would be asked to leave.

That left himself, Cameron and Luke, who wouldn't be so highly favored by the sect in comparison.

" Well if your so eager I have no qualms with you leading the way." Malgrey responded which caused Lovren to go back in his shell.

Their patience was soon rewarded, however, as a buzzing sound was heard in everyone's ears. This they assumed would be the status update.

" Squad Ava in need of reinforcement, Immediately!"

Which made all silent as they looked at Taf who as usual was cool as a cucumber.

To be continued
