Malika.

Barzakh.

December 19, 2009.

12:30 pm.

The second she put her foot on the ground all the noises of the street and the cafe went completely silent. She went to get Farah, but no one was there the whole street was empty. She screamed, no answer just the echo of her voice.

She felt the emptiness of the place. Hakim stood behind her with his half-filled coffee. "What about now?"

"What is happening here? Where is everyone?!"

"They still here," he said calmly. She remembered what was written on the papyruses and gasped. "let's have a walk, it will help you." They went to the back of the guest house facing the Nile. Malika was breathing heavily. "ask me, I bet there are many questions inside your head." Hakim put the cup on the ground and got a pipe from his pocket and lighted it.

"The spell on the papyrus can't be true," Malika said.

"Why not?" he asked.

"It said they used dark magic! It's about changing destiny and reality! It's unchangeable!" Malika said, putting her hair in a high ponytail.

"That's true but it doesn't mean it's impossible," he said, shrugging his shoulders.

"No, that doesn't make sense, Take me back!" Malika said fast.

"There is no way back, it's your responsibility to fix it," he said firmly.

"Fix what? Why me?! Why don't you fix it yourself?"

"Because of your powers!"

"WHAT POWERS?!" she suddenly screamed.

"Listen Malika, in this world, there are humans born with normal DNA and others born with different ones. Their DNA gives them different abilities like invisibility, duplication, astral projection and other infinite numbers of powers and abilities. Some have stronger powers than others and we are one of them."

Malika blinked several times. "What are we?"

"Dimensions travelers and guardians."

"Dimensions what?" Malika said hesitantly.

"Travelers and guardians; it's our responsibility to fix realities and keep its natural order."

"Realities…natural order…" Malika whispered.

"Yes, there are infinite numbers of realities," Hakim said automatically. He sat on the ground and looked at the Nile. "you know the house of mirrors; it's the same concept"— he drew a small circle inside a bigger one with his hand on the sand of the ground— "let's say the small circle is you and surrounded with mirrors; the big circle." he stopped and looked at her. "you will see infinite numbers of your reflection on the mirrors, right?"

She nodded. "That's it; one main reality surrounded by infinite alternative versions of itself," he said and locked eyes with her, seeing how confused she looked.

"What is this place then?" she said after a long minute of thinking.

"This is a middle point between the main reality and all the alternative ones; you can say it's a gate to travel from one reality to another and to travel in time through each reality itself." he took a small sip of the coffee and continued, "only two types of people can go through it; time travelers and dimension travelers, the difference between them is time travelers can't stay here; they travel through it, but they don't actually see it but on the other hand dimension travelers can create a place here; like me creating another version of Aswan."

"I'm confused… what any of this has to do with me?!" Malika said quietly.

"You're a dimension guardian, it's your responsibility to fix reality."

"Aren't there other people with the same ability can do it why me?" she took a deep breath then said, "I can't do it."

"Because the people who messed up reality are in your life, and it just a matter of time before it fixed itself."

"Great! So, time can fix itself no need for me then," she said and stood up.

"It will fix itself but how do you think it will be fixed?" he said and raised his eyebrows.

"Oh god…" her eyes widened. "Is it going to… kill them?!" she whispered the last two words.

"Kill is not the correct word; erase is much suitable," he said and smirked.

"Erase!!" Malika echoed.

**

"Where is Donggun in all of that? And who's going to be erased?" Farah asked Malika, stopping her.

Before she could answer, Hakim raised his hand to get them to stop talking. "No more talk, let's watch!" Hakim clapped his hand, and everything started to move.
