A few weeks passed and soon Liu Kang realized that every piece of document that Governor Shang signed on meant that an entire family would be executed. Their wealth and properties would be confiscated by the government and would either be used for official purposes or auctioned away to whoever could give the best price.

As the governor's guard, he would follow the governor at his side quietly and be ignored by everyone else.

A few days ago, he met General Ling and realised that the bandits that they had attacked were his men. His caused Liu Kang to act unnaturally as he was scared, but General Ling did not find anything suspicious as he believed it was because Liu Kang was awed by his status of a general.

In the empire, a general is the highest military rank a person can achieve. The ranks that are higher than the rank of general are all temporary ranks, only used in military campaigns. Each and every general are people who are above everyone and only below one person, the emperor. Unlike the civil ministers, where there is a pyramid hierarchy as there is only one prime minister, there are numerous generals in the empire and they all each lead their own Corps. Each army corps is usually around 50,000 people, but the size of the corps may be bigger or smaller depending on the size of the province.

General Ling's corps has around fifty five thousand people because he is the general of the Dragon's Claw corps which is stationed in the province where the capital is located. The reason why the city's granary was not emptied by the army is that half of his corps had gone to He Jin city along with the governor's steward to cleanse that city.

That day, Liu Kang learnt that almost half of the people living in Lin Yu city had been executed on the grounds of rebellion. These people were so rich and bored that they had nothing to spend their money on, so they started having dreams of becoming the emperor. They hated the fact that they were so close to the capital, yet could not establish a foothold in the capital no matter how hard they tried.

Soon, these feelings became hatred and they felt that they were as good as or even better than the emperor, and believed that he was a useless wastrel since they realised that the emperor only attained the throne because none of the other princes wanted it! What kind of nonsense is this?!

They started trying to groom their own forces in secret and eventually connected with each other, forming the society of the Heavens which spread throughout the Empire. They had no leader and the majority of them were merchants, who had no clue that the Empire was just a country that was suppressed by the immortal sects, and that the capable people were trying to become gods, not an emperor.

It was not really a difficult choice for the princes or anyone at all, if you are asked to choose between trying to become a god or become an emperor, who had to babysit an entire continent of children, and constantly be aware of what the immortal sects are doing...

Their homegrown troops were mostly martial artists, as they were the only ones who were willing to join a private military force, but they were squashed like a bug by General Ling's troops who were all cultivators in less than a day.

When the fight was over, the entire estate where the fight took place was covered in blood, so the captains just decided to burn the entire estate to the ground, which is why more than half of Lin Yu city was razed to the ground.

In the empire, once you join the army, you are made to swear an oath to never spread its cultivation technique and to be loyal to the empire for the rest of your life. They are then taught the Salamander's Breath, which is a cultivation technique that concentrates on offence. This is a cultivation technique that would greatly increase your offensive powers but neglects your defence and it the ideal technique for an army. The ranks in the army are usually awarded based upon your cultivation's progress.

All new enlistees start at the rank of private and may be promoted up to the rank of corporal unless they break into the realm of Qi Flow. Once you are a Qi Flow cultivator, you will be allowed to be promoted up to the rank of a second lieutenant.

A cultivator in the realm of meridian forming will be allowed to be promoted up to the rank of a major, and anyone who has formed their core will be allowed to reach the highest rank in the military.

There are also top secret units, where they are not given military ranks but receive all the benefits that a major would get. Examples of such units are the general's own guard unit, spies or elite units formed for special purposes.

The governor's steward and the rest of the army's troops had also returned and gave a report that ten per cent of He Jin City was found to be rebels, and they were all executed on the spot. They did not encounter much resistance as they mainly joined the rebels out of hatred and were not as rich as the merchants.

At first, Liu Kang was disturbed by the wailing and crying that he could hear from the governor's study, but later Governor Shang noticed it and made him watch the executions at the execution square.

At first, Liu Kang felt uneasy but after a few days, Liu Kang just stared at the executions without any feelings. He understood that they were all rebels and were planning on starting a rebellion, which would have caused many innocent people to die. As for why they had to kill all the servants, children and old people, it was because when you pull out weeds, you had to pull out the roots too. A seed of hatred would be planted in these people minds and unless you killed everyone who cared about the rebel, they too would rebel eventually.

Today is the day that the army is leaving Lin Yu city. All preparations have been made and we will be heading to Lu Wang city. General Ling's investigations found that a religion was created in Lu Wang city but has no idea what to do with it.

They call themselves the Crying God Church, and they will group up and literally cry together. Somehow, everyone felt really good after crying and it spread like a plague. This ridiculous religion has almost taken over the entire city, which is why if Governor Shang finds this religion to be harmful, the entire Lu Wang city could become their enemy and they would have to wipe out this city from the continent.
