In the late afternoon, I found Merlin giving lectures to Tulip about some kind of spell.
When I approached, the two spotted me.
"Should I come back later?", I asked.
"No", Tulip said, "It's okay. You are a beginner, so it is totally fair that you go first". She smiled at me, but I knew there was a sneer hidden under that smile.
"Come here, son, show me your wand", Merlin said while stroking his beard. He nodded and said, "I am sure that you'll accomplish great things with the help of this nice piece. But I must warn you not to sink in the ocean of power the wand will give you".
He frowned at the crystal but decided not to share his thoughts with us. He gave me the wand, I nodded.
"Now", he said, "What do you know about spells?"
"Um... Not much. I know that the natural energy is channeled through the wand and creates something called a spell which requires an incantation that specify what kind of spell the one wants".
"Excellent. Now try casting the light charm please".
I waved my wand and said, "Lumos!". Instantly, a huge glob of light was generated from the tip of my wand that almost blinded us.
"Wow", exclaimed Tulip.
I exterminated the charm. Merlin clapped his hands in approval and said, "I underestimated your talent. Let's see another one. Try to enlarge this pin". He put a small pin on his desk.
I pointed the wand at the pin and said, "Engorgio!". The pin became big.
"Now return it to its normal size".
"Reducio!". The pin returned its normal size.
"That's not fair", Tulip murmured, "I've waited to my second year to attempt these spells and failed numerous times. Now he tried them for the first time and succeeded!".
Merlin laughed and patted her shoulder, "Don't regard yourself, dear. You of all the students at Hogwarts found the Mansion Of Night and survived the maze".
"Yeah, though it was cheer luck".
Merlin just shook his head while smiling. He then turned to me and said, "Increase the size of the pin and explode it".
I obeyed. Once again, the pin became big and I said, "Bombarda!"
Do you know what happened? No, it wasn't a small explosion like it was supposed to be. Instead, the entire room exploded. The power channeled through my wand was so powerful that it made a big explosion rather than a small one.
I just stood there stunned. Fortunately, 3 pieces of stone, that were going to blast my head, awakened me. I panicked. I drew all my power and cast the shielding spell, though I tried it in order to test my luck.
"Protego!", I shouted. Once I said that, a transparent layer surrounded me. The bricks that were going to blast me struck the layer and bounced against it.
When everything was calm again, I turned and found myself face to face to Richard, who raised his eyebrow at me.
"I brought you here to learn how to control your power, not to blow up the rooms of my house", he complained.
Merlin emerged from the dust, beside him walked Tulip who wore a look of disbelief on her face.
"Repero!", Merlin said. The broken wall began to repair itself and once again everything returned to normal, as if no explosion happened here.
"How did you do that?", Tulip asked, still not believing her eyes.
I sighed helplessly, "I don't know, it just happened". Richard just shook his head, as if to say: ' young-wizards-these-days'.
"Enough for today", he announced, "Tomorrow you two are going to learn how to care for magical creatures with the help of an old friend of mine. Also you are going to learn how to brew potions and make pills from a disciple of mine".
"What about my school?", I asked.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, I can't just dump my school and my friends".
"I have made the school and your friends think that you went to another school far from your home. Don't worry, you'll still be able to meet your friends from time to time".
"Okay".
"Off you go now, tomorrow you'll be here early. No excuses".
"At least let me wake up in my home, not here".
I went outside with Tulip, she told me about how Hogwarts is and how she found the lake that took her inside the maze. I felt like she accepted me and took note of me. No more sneering. Yay!
I reached for the pen in my pocket and apparated to my home in Lebanon, ready to face the angry inquiry of my parents. I guess I should've told Richard to leave them a note that I was leaving for the day. But apparently he had forgotten.
