Chapter 8 Chapter8

It’s all over, I have experimented all the magic I can come up with. But this place is simply a coffin completely isolated from the outside world. Any mobility magic is ineffective here! I now know why so many magicians died here, because this is the spot that connects with the outside world. This place was probably the exit of this cave, but it is now covered by at least five meters of ice. These magicians probably worked hard to find a way to open a whole on the ice wall with magic, but they never escaped.

I sat with Brian back to back, sitting on my cloak. It is impossible to get out of here today. I have used three magic of fireballs, but I only melted about 50 centimeters of ice.

"Mr. Leiden, will we die?" The boy asked me. His body was trembling and his lips began to turn blue.

"Don't talk nonsense, I won't die here!" I tried to show all my confidence. "We won’t die staying here for a bit longer. When I recall my fire spell, we can break through the ice and leave here."

The young boy leaned silently on my back, his body temperature is the only warmth I can feel here! I took out my magic book from my arms and tried to recite all the flame spells.

"Brian! What's happened to you?" When I put down the magic book to rest - after reciting the spells, I had to rest for a while to combine spells and memory - I suddenly felt that the body behind me was still. This little devil may have fallen asleep - at this temperature, if you fall asleep, you may never wake up again!

"I'm fine, Mr. Leiden!" Brian opened his eyes as I waved him. He almost fell into an eternal dream. At the moment I let go of his shoulders, I was heavily relieved, fortunately nothing serious happened...

Wait a minute, since when did I start to care about this little devil? He has nothing to do with me, he is just a burden to me...

"Say something, at least make sure you don't fall asleep!" I said to Brian, all I have to do now is to wait for the combination of spells and memories.

“OK!”

"Tell me about your master!" I said casually, but I suddenly realized that Brian had just known about the death of his master. This is too cruel for a 16-year-old boy!

"Sorry, I... I shouldn't have said that!"

"It doesn't matter, Mr. Leiden... As you said just now, my master is dead, I am still alive, I have to face everything!"

“……”

"My master was not a very strong magician!" Brian leaned his head back on my shoulder, with a bit of sorrow in his voice. "But he is a good man... a really good man! I lost my parents at a very young age. He took me in… and raised me up!”

"He was not a very strong magician, although he always bragged to me about how exciting his earlier adventures were. But I know that he was not a powerful magician! Because I have never seen him apply magic above level three. Either have I ever seen him make any powerful instruments. He operated a magic store for a living, selling some of the most common magic instruments. The business was barely enough to make a living for both of us…” Brian said slowly, his tone started to soften. He began to immerse himself into the past with his words.

"That was a happy time, although we were very poor, but were still very happy! Although the business was not good, there were times when we had no customers for a while. But he still laughed. Even if there were sorrows, he never showed that in front of me! He has always treated me as a kid. But I know in order to maintain our lives, he has visited the pawn shop many times. After that, those treasures he showed me before, those treasures from his previous adventures, including several knives, all disappeared from his collection… Though he sat in his store every day, there were still only few customers…”

"That day... I remember, it was a morning, he suddenly came back from the outside. He looked very happy, smiled and hugged me. Then he told me he finally got some luck. He took out a piece of paper, it was a summon from the king. The summon asks for magicians to join the crusade that is about to set off! The king was very angry at the failure last time, so he planned to summon a large army to deal with the evil Necromancer. Hence he paid a large amount of bounty to recruit magicians!”

"He was very happy, because the king's bounty was very high, enough to support our living for ten years. With this money, we don’t need to worry about money for a long time. Moreover, we could also repair the house that has been leaking..."

"Why did your master join the crusade? You just said he was not a very strong magician. You must know that the Necromancer is an extremely horrible enemy. It is a death trap for him to join the crusade!”

"But at that time no one would think about failure. There were about a hundred magicians who set off…How could such a big army fail? He told me he would be very careful and would not rush to the front of the team. He said he would take care of himself... Then he set off. When he was leaving, he smiled and told me to take care of the store and asked me to pay attention not to let the workers who came to repair the house steal things. He told me to wait for his victorious return."

I listened to the boy’s story quietly. Unconsciously, his tone began to change, and began to sob.

"Soon after that, the news of the defeat began to spread on the streets! Everyone was talking about this and trying not to believe the news. But the news was eventually confirmed. Almost in front of everyone, the only 50 survivors returned to the town. They were surrounded by families of the crusade. Everyone was anxious to know about the news of their beloved ones. But the response was that except for the those few who avoided the confrontation after being left behind the crusade, everyone else was killed! They described terrible scene. When they arrived at the battlefield, they only saw dead bodies buried in half-melted snows. The power of Lewis surpassed everyone's imagination. The giants, the goblins, the orcs, the ogre, and some evil creatures from different worlds ambushed the crusade. After the fierce battle, the entire crusade was completely eliminated. Dead human bodies almost covered the whole earth! They only saw those evil creatures searching for dead bodies, killing the wounded. The remaining 50 soldiers would not have survived if they had arrived at the battlefield before the retreat of the evil creatures.

"I used to hope my master was a brave man, though he always disappointed me. But at that time, I could not hope less that my master had hidden behind the battle. I wished him home, no matter what, I only wanted him back, even being looked down upon, with children throwing stones to him. It’s okay, as long as he came back! But…”

"So you participated in this crusade? You wanted to revenge for your master? But you know, it is in vain! You are not qualified to fight against the Necromancer – not to mention about defeating him, you don’t even have the qualification to fight against him!”

Brian looked back at me, and I looked back at him. It seemed that something was shining in his eyes.

"I know that it’s impossible for me to revenge, but I can’t accept this! I know I am a rookie magician. I can't even use the most basic magic missiles, but...but..." He clutched my hand tightly. Although trying to hold back, I can see his tears flowing uncontrollably from his eyes.

"I know that I am of no use, I am stupid and dump. I always remember the wrong magic medicines. I always make mistakes and break things! Not mention about using spells, I am unable to master the basic medicine compounding! But please don’t expel me. I will work hard. I can help you clean the house, I can cook for you, I can serve you well, please don't expel me, I can do anything, just don't expel me..."

"These are not problems, in fact, your talent is not too bad, you are just easily distracted..."

"I will never do this in the future, I swear, I will concentrate in the future. I will not think about anything else, I will make it..."

"I saw a burning flame in your eyes. It is a blazing flame that is only arisen from hatred! Your flames are so violent, even the fire from the hell will be eclipsed. If you can't extinguish the flame, I will not teach you!"

"Please, I beg you, Master, don't expel me. I will be obedient in the future. I will never make you angry. I will no longer sneak into the village to play with other children, don't expel me. I will follow whatever your orders are, I…I have nowhere to go!”

I cuddled the head of the sobbing boy to comfort him, while I was clearing my memory out of my mind. Suddenly I was shocked that I began to care about this boy, probably because we were both trapped in this hopeless situation. At moments like this, humans would have some emotional connections.
