Despite what I've wished, the days change much slower.
Someone gave me that look of a hoe hopping on any rich guy I wanted and that is bul*****. I got more money than Liam so why call me a hoe when you can call him a gigolo. The difference in treatment was clear. I demand a fair system!
But what I liked about the days passed was that nobody in our floor dared to gossip about me again. Of course, they're doing it at another place, but that's enough for me. At least they aren't disrespecting me at work. Being cordial is all that matters.
There wasn't a major problem with me during working hours though I still suck at arts. Still, I've been adapting quite. Saturday night arrived. Winter is around the corner and one can already feel the cold air that brings in the chill. I looked outside through the window and noticed how glum the outside world looks. I don't know why but the coldness I feel right now isn't the same when I am still the old me.
Wearing a long-sleeve black slim top that can be tucked in abstract geometric print A-line mini skirt, I met the Wang's. When the driver dropped me off, brother Luke was standing at the doorway waiting for me. He flashed me his brightest smile in his grey slim-fit v-neck long-sleeve knitwear pullover with a white polo and I felt something foreign. And that foreign thing… it's my heart beating. And I stared wide eyes at the same time clutching my left upper chest.
'Heart, why now?'
I don't know how long I was doing it but when I came to, brother Luke was at my side and I am seated inside their mansion.
"—ris?"
No, I'm sure I saw him guide me inside and had me sit and his parents arrived.
"IRIS?!"
I heard a male voice called my name then realized that it was Luke's.
"IRIS?!"
"Y-yeah?" I answered. My voice was weak and hoarse but otherwise, I responded.
There wasn't just three pair of eyes looking at me worried but I saw twelve with Mike and Cindy Wang in front of me. Luke and nine of their maids were by my side. It's creepy. I blinked many times before my brain registered what was happening. Gosh! They're treating me as someone sick!
Believe me, I'm not.
"Dear, are you all right? You could've told me you're not feeling well instead of coming here. Want me to call your driver? Or let us take you to the hospital?" Cindy asked me. Her hands held mine but there was something on the way so I looked at my side and I had with me a glass of water. Ah yes, they offered me some water some time ago.
I put down the glass on a coffee table nearby and answered, "No. No Aunt. I'm okay now. I'm sorry for making you worry"… I paused and turned to look at them one by one then continued, "I was a little tired but I'm okay now. Thank you."
"Please don't lie, Iris, tell us when you feel unwell. I'll drive you home or at the hospital." Luke told me by my side.
"No, I'm okay now. Thank you, brother Luke." I told him with sincerity.
"Are you sure Ms. Lin? You were clutching your chest before and you're not responding to us… we can schedule another dinner when you're feeling good?" Mike Wang suggested to me and Cindy.
"Ah, that… I-I'm, I'm sorry. I did not mean to make you guys worried. I wasn't honestly clutching my chest. It's this…" I pointed to my flower pin on my black sleeve top, "I was fixing this... Sorry?"
My poor excuse left them speechless and Mike and Cindy Wang looked at each other before sighing. Luke continued to stare but he did not say anything.
"If you say so then so it is. But tell me next time if you are unwell, is that okay? Promise me." Cindy said and raised her right pinky finger.
"I promise Aunt," I said and hooked my pinky finger with hers. I smiled at them with a grateful heart. I can sense how they were worried about how they sounded and it made my heart warm. It's just… I was really clutching my heart before.
No, I don't think that it was because I felt sick. Like I said, I felt something foreign. My heart skipped a beat. Like, actually. And I don't think it was because I like or love Luke. I can't explain it but I'm sure it wasn't my heart. No, that's not right. This isn't my own body, to begin with, so of course, it wasn't my own heart but… How can I say it? Is it not my own emotions? Yes. It wasn't.
For the first time, I think I saw or for a better word, I felt this body's owner. It only lasted for a few seconds but I am sure at that time, my heart did not feel anything. It was her heart that skipped a beat for Luke. It was terrifying and it came as a surprise. So, before I could even think and consider my surroundings, my hand was already on top of my chest.
My mind was filled with thoughts of the real Iris and me sharing the same body so it came to no surprise that I did not remember what I was doing nor cared about how people saw me.
This revelation was something I was half expecting. But if the Iris of this place is still here then how come I came to live inside her body? For how many years must we share a body? Can we coexist or is it going to be me vs. her and the winner will get to live inside the body? What happened to me in the first place and why have I arrived at this place? There are a ton of questions I wanted to ask but who could answer them?
"Hey, are you sure you're okay?" I turned and saw Luke nudged me. Mike and Cindy went in and prepared their dining hall with the other maids so I am left alone with Luke.
"I am." I got up and jumped two times as the sound of my heels filled the room with each land then said, "See? I'm all well. I can balance myself with my heels even after jumping."
"I see. I guess I shouldn't be that worried with you then. I should've worried more with the floor. Just look at those heels."
"Tsk, you're just envious with how sturdy the floor was."
"Are you suggesting I am frail? Who was spacing out and clutching her chest a few minutes ago?"
