Qai once again led Feng Lan outside the city walls and the two looked for an open space.

"You need to learn how to defend and win against two opponents at the same time," Qai suddenly said, "or more specifically against a cultivator with a contracted demonic beast."

Feng Lan just nodded in reply as if she was truly a 'slave' in the strictest sense of the word.

"So you will have to practice fighting against me for two days before we actually join a slave match," Qai urged.

Feng Lan instantly agreed and the thus went on to duel with her 'master.'

And so, for a couple of days straight without practically any rest, Feng Lan obediently trained and learned from Qai different strategies and approach to fight enemies.

Qai occasionally brought out the two Silvermoon Apes in order to train his slave cultivator against two opponents with close combat style.

And at one point, Qai even tried to test the mettle of a cultivator with Tiger bloodline by attacking Feng Lan with Shandian and the Silvermoon Apes all at the same time.

Qai and Shandian of course held back his Sage realm strength in order to not accidentally seriously injure Feng Lan—but just the same, they saw to it that the slave cultivator would be truly challenged.

***************

Two days later, Qai once again went to Dong Li's place.

This time, he wanted the young mortal to accompany him and Feng Lan to the 'Shadow' territory once more as they were finally ready to take part in a slave match.

Qai's true intention, apart from curiosity, was to earn from the matches.

There were actually at least a couple of ways to earn in a slave match: the first was to directly engage one's slave in the duel and win the pot prize and the second was to participate in the side betting.

Qai was intent to do both.

Qai apparently learned beforehand that most bets wagered in slave matches were made in 'Spirit Stones' rather than gold—a fact which made Qai believe that slave masters were probably Emperors since circulation of 'Spirit Stones' were transacted among cultivators in the Emperor realm.

Good thing for Qai, he brought some 'Spirit Stones' for himself in this journey.

It should be remembered that he gained some from his exploits in the bandit extermination hosted by Han Valley when he traded the hidden treasures for a third of the mining site's harvest.

And Qai had actually brought a thousand of 'Spirit Stones' in his adventure—and upon learning of the slave match, he thought of grabbing the opportunity to multiply them.

There was no guarantee that Feng Lan would win for him that much, but Qai was confident that he would definitely earn something from it—besides, for him, this adventure was in fact a time to risk things in order for him to learn much from the cultivation world and, at the same time, to grow stronger and smarter.

And so after few moments of walking, Qai and Feng Lan, through the help of Dong Li, finally reached a small underground arena within the 'Shadow' territory.

Apparently, slave matches were strictly kept from the public but since most of the matches were held under the protection of the Shadow Clan, matches could hardly get any subsequent prohibition.

From the entry to the doorway, moreover, Qai already had to pay thirty 'Spirit Stones' for him, Feng Lan and Dong Li.

As it turned out, half of the fee collected at the door would eventually be divided as the pot prize for the winners in every match.

And upon entry, an area where a slave 'master' could enlist a slave cultivator and an area where a spectator could place a bet could already be spotted—so Qai, without further dawdle, approached those areas and enlisted Feng Lan and placed a hundred 'Spirit Stones' bet.

Qai gave Feng Lan the alias, 'Feline Fist' which he attributed to slave cultivator's special bloodline and fighting style.

Feng Lan, on the other hand, was scheduled to fight in the third match. Qai thus would have plenty of opportunity to observe the usual dealings inside the arena.

After some moments, the three youths took seats in the audience as the first match was announced to start in a short while.

**************

Qai apparently made a mistake with his initial thought that slave 'masters' were Emperors. Apparently, while there could really be Emperor slave 'masters,' the slave 'masters' in the first match turned out to be both old cultivators in the Sky Sage realm.

In truth, the organizer of the underground matches—which was ultimately the Black Shadow Clan itself—most probably intended that fees, bets and prizes be dealt in 'Spirit Stones' in order for the organization to multiply their 'Spirit Stones' reserves.

Unknown to Qai however, several eyes in the crowd were looking at their direction. That was because Qai and his companions obviously looked new to the area.

While the underground arena was open for anyone, most cultivators inside the place already looked familiar to one another.

Qai himself noticed the malicious look in their eyes but paid no attention to it. And even if he knew that staying longer in the arena could be dangerous, he decided to stay since he was intent to really immerse in the ways of the cultivation world. Besides he had already paid for the entrance and placed a bet.

'I'll make some winnings first before I leave,' he thought.
