Jayde and Ash chatted together, like the girls Ash was curious why Jayde had been called away by Elder Citro. Jayde repeated the same thing she said to Raven, Ash gave her a suspicious look unlike the others Ash didn't believe that Elder Citro had taken Jayde on as a disciple just because he knew her father, but everyone had secrets, gods knew he had a lot of his own, he thought.

Just then their new Pill and Potion Refinement teacher walked in. Jayde stared at the mage curiously, unlike all the mages she had seen up until now, this mage was short, he was just barely five foot tall, with a long grey beard that reached just below his belly button.

He had a riot of grey hair that stood up all over the place, as though it had never seen a comb or a brush in its lifetime. Big bushy grey eyebrows framed his brown eyes; he had a large bulbous nose and thick lips. He indeed was the ugliest human Jayde had ever seen.

Jayde was fascinated by the pure ugliness of the short man in front of her. Since she had grown up in the Federation where everyone was attractive, cosmetic surgery and DNA enhancements were commonplace, so it wasn't as though she had much exposure to unattractive people.

"My name is Sor Dinia Nelius," the teacher said introducing himself, surprisingly his voice was deep and gravelly.

Giving the five students sitting in front of him a scornful look.

"Before we start, I want to get one thing straight. I believe teaching you how to refine pills or potions is a waste of time my time. At best maybe one of you might end up being a low-level alchemist, but the school insists on offering this class to outer door students, so I have no choice but to waste my valuable time with you worthless lot."

Jayde right index finger tapped on the desk, while her lips pressed together. Taking a deep breath she held it as she counted in her head, it couldn't do for her to lose her temper that this pompous ass.

While Jayde was counting in her head, the other students' faces whitened at Sor Nelius abrupt statement.

"You," Sor Nelius said pointing to one of the boys sitting by the young girl. "Come and collect these textbooks and give them to your fellow students."

The young man stood and walked over to the small pile of textbooks lying on the teacher's desk, collecting five of the books he then handed one to each student, before returning to his desk with his textbook.

Jayde looked at the cover of the textbook «Identifying Common Plants and Herbs».

Sor Nelius turned to look at student sitting in front of him. "Only once you can identify all the herbs and plants in your textbook, will I teach you the basics of potion and pill refinement."

Just as he was about to sit down at his desk, Jayde called out.

"Sor Nelius."

"What?" he said curtly.

"And if we can already identify all these herbs and plants?" Jayde asked sharply.

"Pft, as if that is possible, don't waste my time with frivolous questions." Sor Nelius barked.

He was angry that his valuable research time had been interrupted to teach this bunch of new students if Headmaster Albanus hadn't threatened to cut off his research funding he wouldn't have been caught dead teaching this class.

Raising an eyebrow, Jayde stared at Sor Nelius coldly.

"Well I would hate to disillusion you, but I know every one of these herbs and plants," she said pointing her finger at the textbook in front of her.

"Oh really?" he sneered, "You think that I would believe that some snot-nosed fifteen or sixteen years old can recognize every plant in that textbook?"

"Why would I lie?" Jayde asked matter-of-factly.

"Hmpf, we will see, who else thinks they are a genius like a young mage here?" he asked his tone laced with acid.

Calmly Ash raised his hand. "Like Jayde, I too know all these herbs."

"Oh must be my lucky day, two bloody geniuses," Sor Nelius jeered.

Folding her arms across her chest, Jayde just looked at Sor Nelius coldly, not bothering to rise to his bait.

"Fine," Sor Nelius said in a sotto voice, "let's test just how brilliant you two are, but I'm warning you both that if you fail, I want you to leave this class immediately."

Giving Sor Nelius a hard stare, Jayde said, "Fine, but if we pass you will then speak to Headmaster Albanus and ask to be replaced by a more qualified teacher."

She would have preferred to kick this ugly teacher's ass right out of the class, but she had no idea if the school would allocate another teacher to replace him, never mind attacking a teacher would only lead to her being expelled.

"Ha! I am the most qualified teacher at Damonia," Sor Nelius boasted.

"Really?" Jayde said her tone and expression showing her disbelief.

Gritting his teeth, Sor Nelius fought the urge to slap this young girl silly.

"Fine! IF you both pass, then I'll...I'll," Sor Nelius racked his brain trying to think of something to offer this brat, "I take you on as my apprentice," he said proudly. Ha, that was the best he could think of, even the Mages Guild was always after him to join their precious guild, he had lost count of the number of alchemists who had kneeled and begged him to take them as apprentices.

Jayde was just about to turn down Sor Nelius offer, when she felt Ash tugging at her sleeve, glancing over at Ash, she saw that he was nodding his head faintly, his eyes glowing with excitement.

"Deal, if Ash and I pass your test, then you will take us both on as your apprentices," Jayde said firmly.

Huh? Sor Nelius thought I was only offering her, but thinking back over what he had said, Sor Nelius realized that he hadn't stated he would just take on Jayde as his apprentice. Fine, he harrumphed silently, they would never pass, it took years of studying to be able to identify all the herbs and plants in the Lower Realm, for these two to pass that would mean that they had started studying when they were children.

"Follow me," Sor Nelius ordered, as he walked to the back of the classroom.

Jayde and Ash followed Sor Nelius, standing quietly a few feet away from him. The other three students looked at each other, before standing up and quickly rushing over to stand to the side where they could see Jayde, Ash, and Sor Nelius.

Opening up one of the large cupboards, Sor Nelius started to pull out various herbs which he placed on a table. Sor Nelius turned to face Ash and Jayde once the table was covered with herbs.

"Take out a parchment and quill, and write down the name of each of the herbs on this table," then giving the two a sinister smile, he said, "I require a hundred percent pass mark in my class."

Ash and Jayde returned to their desks to fetch a piece of parchments as well as their quill and ink jar. Walking back to the table covered in herbs, the two started to jot down all the herbs listed.

Seeing the speed that Jayde was writing down the herbs, Sor Nelius sneered. Hah! Just look at her pretending to know what she was doing. Sor Nelius knew many intermediate alchemists, who would battle to identify half the herbs he had placed on the table.

When Sor Nelius noticed that Jayde didn't even bother to pick up and inspect a couple of grasses that looked identical, he scoffed. Also, he would have to pick up those grasses and smell them to identify them accurately.

Looking over her list for a final time to make sure that she had written everything down, Jayde then strolled over to Sor Nelius.

"Here my list," she stated matter-of-factly.

"Hmph," Sor Nelius snorted, grabbing the list out her hand.

Just then, Ash walked up to the two of them and handed his list over to Sor Nelius.

Throwing the two a disdainful look, Sor Nelius picked up his quill as he walked over to the table and started to mark Jayde's paper.

By the time he had reached halfway through the table, his bushy eyebrows had disappeared into his hairline. Impossible! He thought, how could that little girl have gotten everything right.

Throwing Jayde a suspicious look over his shoulder, he carried on down the table, when he got to the three kinds of grass that looked identical, that she hadn't even picked up, he jaw slackened. That girl had also managed to identify all three herbs, and they were even written in the same order as the grasses were laid out.

By now Sor Nelius had forgotten his anger at the cheekiness of Jayde, he could feel excitement bubbling up, she was a veritable genius. His hands started to itch, just imagining how gifted this young mage could turn out. Then remembering that she was an outer door student, he shoulders drooped.

Such a pity, he thought she is only a bronze class student. It was blasphemous.

Taking out Ash's parchment, Sor Nelius began marking his paper as well, and just like Jayde Ash also identified all the herbs, but unlike Jayde Ash had picked up various herbs to smell and even taste, but still it was a remarkable achievement that two young students from the outer doors had been able to identify all these herbs.

Remember how rude he had been to Jayde, Sor Nelius could feel his cheeks heating up, refusing to make eye contact he mumbled softly, "You pass."

Cupping her ear, Jayde said, "Excuse me."

"Ahem, I said you both passed," then as an afterthought he added: "Congratulations."

Ash seeing that Jayde was about to say something, quickly pinched her arm. Jayde turned to gaze at Ash, her eyebrow cocked. Ash shook his head slightly, before turning and giving Sor Nelius a small bow.

"Thank you, master."

Seeing that Jayde just stood quietly at his side, he gave her a slight nudge with his elbow. Silently Jayde let out a sigh before she too gave Sor Nelius a small bow.

"Master," she said faintly.

Ash had better have a damn good explanation, she thought. She was not happy having to acknowledge this ugly little man as her master.

Clapping his hands together Sor Nelius smiled brightly.

"Well then, that settles it. The two of you will stay here in the lab area," then turning to glare at the other three students to scowled, "What are you three doing standing there like dummies, get back to your desks and start studying your textbook."

The young girl glared at Jayde, before flickering her hair over her shoulder. Turning around she stomped off to her desk, the two young men following behind her.

"Now then, today I will show you two how to make a basic healing potion," Sor Nelius said.

Sor Nelius then started to rattle off a list of herbs, seeing Jayde and Ash looking at him, he growled at the two, "Well, what are you waiting for? Start writing!" he ordered.
