Demon Realm

Two months after Jayde's arrival in Doha.

Ren d'Aar, the ruler of the Demon realm, awoke from another restless night, drenched in sweat. Again he dreamed of her, his true-mate, her beautiful amber eyes filled with grief, at least this time he hadn't awoken in pain, but he felt grief, his heart ached, but thankfully no pain, unlike a week ago when he had been ripped from his dream, he had felt endless pain in his body, it was as though he was being torn apart, his insides aflame, his very soul burning.

That was not the first time he awoke in pain, two weeks prior to that awful night, it was the first time he had been woken by bone tearing pain.

He knew this pain did not belong to him, but he was confused, was this a warning from Ala, the Doha world guardian spirit, was she telling him that his true-mate was about to be born into this world and would face danger?

Ren analyzed the feelings he was experiencing, it really did not feel like a prophecy dream, if he wasn't mistaken it felt as though he really experiencing what his true-mate was going through, but that was impossible.

When one's true-mate came into the world, the other would feel their birth, and once their true-mate reached maturity, their souls would be drawn together. It was only after they met and the bonding process started would true-mates feel each other's feelings.

No matter how Ren tried to convince himself that he was imagining things, he couldn't shake the feeling that his true-mate was already in this world — and that she was in danger.

The beast locked deep within his soul rattled against the bindings that caged it, it too felt that its true-mate was in danger, and was desperate to go to her side. Unable to break free it roared out its fury.

Tiredly Ren rubbed his forehead and spoke to the untamed part of his soul.

[Even if I allowed you to be free how would you find her?]

The roaring in Ren's mind stopped, and the beast pondered over the question, confusion filled Ren's mind.

[???]

[There is no soul-calling, how can we track her?]

[...]

Climbing out of bed, Ren walked over to the large windows in his bedroom, staring out into the night, his purple eyes anxious, his fists clenched in frustration.

[I don't understand, if she is here we should have felt her arrival a long time ago]

The beast as if understanding his other half pain and frustration, settled down.

Feeling the beast in his soul calming down, Ren mulled over different possibilities in his mind, the only thing that made sense is that his true-mate was too far away for him to sense, which is why the soul-calling didn't work.

If that was true, then his mate wasn't a demon, which had never happened before. Demons always mated with other demons, they were not like the other races in Doha.

While demons were the strongest race on Doha, they paid for that strength, the could command the very elements of Doha with a click of their fingers, but only a lucky few were given true-mates, and only true-mates could have female children.

Demons could marry and have children like any of the other races, but children born from unmated couples were always male. Demons could even wed other races, but those couples never had children.

This was the reason that the demon race was dying. For the past ten thousand years, fewer demons were finding their true-mates, the last female demon born was over five thousand years ago, they had so few females left. The few females that were left had gone into seclusion, fearful for their lives as the male demons grew desperate.

For the past couple of thousand years, mated and unmated female demons seldom carried a child to term, and if female miraculously fell pregnant, there was a ninety-five percent change she would miscarry within a couple of months.

The once bustling cities of the demon realm, that had once carried the sound of children's laughter were now deadly silent. Male demons were either choosing to go to sleep, to wait for the call of their true-mate or allowing their dark halves to takeover, and turning to dark magic, becoming the vilest of creatures — devils.

Devils thrived of chaos and pain, they were insatiably filled with lust and greedy to fed off the pain they inflicted, they derived pleasure from inflicting torture and humiliation on their victims, and they preyed on the weak and their greatest delicacy was the treasured females of the demon race.

Ren and his warriors hunted down these vile creatures, and every month the number of demons turning was increasing, as more and more male demons lost the fight against the darkness in their souls.

Due to the nature of the demon, the more they fought and killed, the quicker the darkness grew, it was only through the soul-binding of a true-mate, that the darkness in a demon could be controlled, the brightness of a true-mate soul balanced the darkness of the soul of a male demon.

Ren felt the heavy burden of his people on his shoulders, the extinction of his race was so close, and it was all due to his father. His father's sins had set the demon race onto the path of destruction, and damn humans had helped seal their fate.

Without Ala's intervention, the demons would have already disappeared from Doha.

With his right arm braced against the window, Ren leaned his head tiredly against it and stared unseeing outside.

Cursing his father for the millionth time, he thought back to how the demon race had ended up in the situation they now found themselves in.
