"What about finding his parents? I'm sure November's parents are currently looking for him!"

Fear not Thomas, I have no one coming for me.

Except possibly Miceter...

I'm not sure what's going on on his end though...

"Why are we taking it home with us?!" Aaron demanded.

"Shut up, November hasn't decided yet." Ellain's determined silver eyes met my own. "If you want to come home with us, nod your head yes. If not, then shake your head no."

I obviously nodded my head yes.

Surprisingly, after I gave my answer, Ellain revealed a relieved smile before he turned towards his two curious sons.

"Father, what brought this on so suddenly?"

"You're up to one of your shady deals again, aren't you?! Well, let me in on the plan before acting upon it!"

"Congratulations, Aaron, you're going to the Academy next year!" Ellain suddenly announced.

I blinked my eyes in astonishment. The kid who couldn't tell the difference between a wild and civil beast is going to the Academy? The Academy I specifically set up for Thomas?

What's going on here?! I didn't write this!

"Of course." Aaron proudly stated. "It's only natural that an excellent man such as myself belongs to an equally excellent school."

Not really...

"Sometimes I wonder where you get your arrogance from..." Ellain mumbled. He then coughed, clearing his throat. "Well anyway, I suppose you'll need a companion."

"And I trust you'll buy me one like everyone else's parents."

"But what if you could get one for free?"

Don't tell me...

Ellain, you...

...you opportunistic jerk!

I get where Ellain is going with this...

He wants me to be Aaron's companion!

And to accomplish that, I would have to wear a slave collar!

I would have no problem if I was enslaved to Thomas--considering I'm supposed to be his Mentor and all--but Aaron?

Heck no!

Why is this situation even a thing?!

"I would rather remove my status as a Noble Merchant Apprentice than to accept a stray beast cat as my magic companion."

Right answer, Aaron, right answer!

I've never been so proud of you like I am now!

"Why not hand it to Thomas when he enrolls this year?" Aaron suggested.

Aaron, you're my Guardian Angel in disguise, aren't you?!

Ellain showed an apologetic expression. "Believe it or not, we could only afford to pay your tuition."

Silence decesended upon the table.

Aaron and I both turned to Thomas, expecting him to be hurt by this bit of information. The sight we saw, however, was different than how we expected him to react.

He was calm.

Thomas was calm.

"What?" Thomas innocently asked, as if we weren't just discussing something major.

"Thomas, don't you have anything to say about not being able to attend the Academy?"

"No, not really." Thomas shook his head.

"Seriously? Not a single word?"

"I mean, I did help to pay for your tuition so it's not really a surprise."

"W-What?" Aaron stuttered out. "Why?"

"It's complicated..." Thomas shifted his eyes away. "The fish should be ready by now..."

And with that, Thomas stood up once more and rushed towards the bar.

It's complicated...

It's complicated...

Those two words swam in my head as I stared after Thomas in a daze.

Thomas...

The Protagonist helped pay for the Cannon Fodder Villain's tuition?

...

What is this situation?!

THIS IS BEYOND COMPLICATED!!!
