Kim took a seat on the comfortable furniture close to the bookshelves. Her eyes glided from the seamless dark wood of his desk which was in contrast with the hardwood floors.

As her eyes caressed the books, then they moved back to his desk were files were scattered, in an order she presumed. Seeing as he easily found whatever he searched for.

The sound of flipping pages and his fingers dancing across the keyboard was rhythmic. She found him rather pleasant to watch as he busied himself. Kim felt reluctant to leave the peaceful basement.

Her thoughts drifted back to the main reason she returned home. "Carl, don't you think we've drifted apart?"

"..."

'Where did that come from?" He pondered.

Then a wry smile flashed across his face, "I guess this past one month did more harm than good."

"I don't think we have, I mean, I haven't. I still think of you. But it isn't the same for you, right?" He questioned.

Kim searched his eyes, oddly they were peaceful not the tiniest ripple. She failed to answer him, though there was no need for her to.

I guess he indeed accepted the fact that she wasn't his.

"If you feel we drifted apart in just one month, I really have nothing to say about that. However," he paused, took a deep breath in, then continued, "you should quit acting like you have feelings for me."

The look on her face seemed puzzled.

He explained, "Last night you got mad because I told you aunt's daughter cooked."

A sheen of sweat appeared on her white skin. Regardless, she nodded in understanding.

"I've tried to make you feel as secure as possible but you've refused to trust me, I don't think I've done anything to make you feel so insecure around me.

Actually, there can be no relationship without trust. I don't expect you to take me seriously when I haven't fulfilled this basic requirement."

After seriously contemplating about the issue with Kim, this was the conclusion he came to.

You don't expect a stranger to trust you when you come bearing gifts with no condition whatsoever.

Some may take a leap of faith and trust blindly while others are a little bit cautious.

And Kim was the latter because of her experience.

Kim remained silent, listening to him talk while she observed him. She couldn't refute anything he said anyway.

"If the reason you exhibit such possessiveness is because you feel I might abandon you or kick you out later, rest assured, I would never do that, you have my word.

If you're confused about your feelings though, you should clarify them as soon as possible as I may not always be here."

'Just like you, I only go where I'm needed,' he thought.

Clearly he was at peace with whatever she chose.

"Your friend will be worried, you should go back." He reminded her.

At that moment, his phone rang, he looked at it, it was Chamberlain, his eyes twitched.

Then he looked around the basement wondering if there was any camera, may be Chamberlain called him to mock him.Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.webnovel.com for visiting.

"Don't tire yourself out." Kim nagged before heading out.

This time around, she was absorbed in everything she heard. His words kept ringing in her head repeatedly.

But at the same time, she reasoned when he talked about security it was emotional security. She still could not trust him with her heart even though he hadn't done anything untoward to her or anyone she knew of.

As her steps faded, Carl picked up his phone to answer his boss.

Chamberlain's gruff voice came through the phone, "Come out for a bit."

Carl sneered. He was 100% sure he was about going out with his wife.

"I advise you shouldn't be a coward and face your wife without my help. Besides, you've both been very busy so I can't possibly interfere today as well." Carl reasoned sarcastically.

Chamberlain was left speechless for a moment.

"Why don't you come out and say that to my face?" He challenged

Carl rebutted, "Isn't that a ploy to get me to go to you? I'm not that free."

Actually Chamberlain was at the docks watching over the import of the illegal goods.

He felt bored all of a sudden and decided to call Carl. He did not expect he would be misunderstood.

"You call yourself my friend!" He huffed.

Carl frowned, "I never did."

Expertly he changed the subject, "My sister is at your house."

"She is."

He did not really know what to say next so there was silence for a few seconds.

"If that's all, I'm hanging up." Without waiting for his reply, Carl curtly hung up.

He sighed in relief. He could never understand his weird boss, he didn't even want to.

His eyes trailed to the door where Kim left from, his eyes lowered briefly.

He wondered why he stupidly hung up when he could talk to someone and forgot about his rejection.

Remembering his work, he buried himself in a pile of report and office work.

Outside, Kim had returned to Isabella who was lying on the couch in a lifeless manner. Her eyes still droopy.

"Why don't you just sleep, then when it's time for lunch, I'll wake you up or should we go out?"

Why would Bella want to go out? She had enough reason to stay indoors. Besides once her brother found out she was here he was most like to drag her away.

"I'll sleep."
