Chapter 11 – Light At the End of the Tunnel

The meetup with his classmates was a small matter, the test was a larger matter.

His behind no longer hurt, so Gu Zheng quickly sat in front of his computer. He checked for nearby agricultural farms. However, in the beginning, even ordinary chicken farms didn’t come up, and it made him feel as if wasted time.

Shanghai was an international metropolis, in the outskirts there was no lack of fields lacking pollution. They were all in the suburbs. Gu Zheng chose a few and called them one by one to ask them. Over there, they said that not only were there not any pollution, they had chicken eggs, goose eggs, duck eggs, quail eggs, and even ostrich eggs.

Gu Zheng automatically filtered Ostrich eggs out. What he had learned was cooking fried eggs, frying the entire egg. Throughout one hour, he wouldn’t be able to fry many Ostrich eggs. Fried duck eggs didn’t maintain the taste of eggs,  and quail eggs were too small. Gu Zheng’s final decision would end up being chicken eggs.

He made an appointment with a couple businesses, and early the next day, Gu Zheng got up and took a subway out of the city.

“Shanghai Tribe Industries!”

Standing in the entrance of the first destination, the door in front of Gu Zheng was wooden with it’s name engraved into a plaque. The name was simplistic, and the environment looked healthy, further the door was made of vine wood, which gave off a nice feeling.

“These are our chicken eggs. Our chicken eggs are mostly sent to high-ranking officials or rich families. Our reviews are excellent, most of the high-quality egg supply in Shanghai is from us!”

The sales staff were very kind, and guided him directly into the hall. After knowing Gu Zheng wanted the eggs, they directly lead him to the poultry section. There, there were indeed some high quality eggs. They had a white shell, rather than the usual yellow shelled eggs, and were somewhat small.

“Inferior quality ingredient!”

He had just touched it, before Gu Zheng shook his head in disappointment. The quality of the chicken eggs were alright, however they weren’t all natural. Of course, this didn’t mean that they were counterfeit goods. However, the chickens that produced these eggs were certainly of low quality, or perhaps even considered toxic. (T/N: For those that need a reminder, the the lower rankings are… low quality, inferior quality, second-class, ordinary… (and nothing higher has appeared yet).)

Gu Zheng looked at a lot of eggs, and even tried the duck eggs. However, a majority of them were inferior quality, even a few were low quality. Unfortunately, his ingredients were limited to second-class quality. As they were lower than second class, Gu Zheng could only be disappointed and leave.

One, two, three places.

Gu Zheng spent the entire day running around to several businesses. He searched from the south end of the city to the north, and wasted no small amount of time in the car. Most of the eggs in the plantations were of low quality. There was a plantation where all of the eggs were of low quality or toxic. That was enough to prove that the plantation was selling counterfeit goods, they clearly had bought farmed eggs, rather than raised free-range eggs.

He wasted an entire day like this, he found a couple more placed at night. In the end though, he was disappointed. On the second day, Gu Zheng decided that he could no longer save money, so he packed up his car, and left.

None, none, still none. Within the huge Shanghai, the nearby junction of Suzhou City and Hangzhou, he had not even found a single second-class egg. Gu Zheng finally understood the rarity of the other ingredients. Last time, him finding that silkie was pure luck. However, the chicken didn’t have much weight, Gu Zheng couldn’t use it to make an entire table’s worth of dishes. Within the three dishes and one soup, two of the main dishes were made up of the silkie.

“After using the immortal pellet, you can raise the level of the ingredients by one!”

Gu Zheng was sitting in the car with a look of frustration, when he suddenly heard the voice of the spirit device in his head. He suddenly sat up straight.

“You said I can raise the grade of the ingredients?”

“Of course. Didn’t I tell you earlier? Four parts ingredients, four parts cooking, and two points repairing? Repairing is mainly used to enhance the grade of ingredients. The better the repair, the higher the level of ingredients. Right now, you’re too weak, one must be in the great desolate space to be able to upgrade ingredients, and each time you can only upgrade one!”

“Why didn’t you say so earlier!”

Gu Zheng yelled out loud. He had searched so hard for two days straight, he felt like his legs were going to separate from him. Only now did the spirit device tell him that he could enhance the grade of the ingredients. If he knew earlier, then he would’ve begun to buy inferior quality chicken eggs, then go back and enhance them to second-class. This would’ve solved his lack of ingredients.

“First of all, you didn’t ask. Second, I had already told you the uses of cultivating earlier, it’s you who is stupid for not thinking of it!”

The spirit device’s words gave him a feeling like he was choking on something. He couldn’t refute a word of it, as the spirit device had told him about the repairing function before, however, he didn’t think about such a thing. So, he didn’t ask the spirit device about such a method. He had ended up blindly looking for nothing and wasting two days.”

“You’re vicious!”

He felt like crying. Gu Zheng asked his driver to send him directly to Qinchuan Road, the Moon Pavilion, as he had already promised his classmates that he wouldn’t miss it. Luckily, the issue regarding ingredients had already been resolved, otherwise his mood wouldn’t have been this good.

The past two days he had entered the Great Desolate space for fifteen minutes. Each time, he felt changes occurring within his body, and it made him feel better. However, Gu Zheng didn’t feel any qi, nor did he feel any Immortal essence. However, he did feel a small increase in his strength, but it wasn’t very significant.

What made Gu Zheng happiest within the Great Desolate space was the planted immortal rice and immortal vegetables. The Immortal rice grew very quickly, it had already sprouted a centimeter. The Immortal vegetables had also revealed green buds. Whether it was the Immortal rice or the Immortal vegetables, they exuded a seductive fragrance. Thus, he was very much looking forward to harvesting them.

After waiting to harvest these two kinds of ingredients, he would be able to enjoy genuine ingredients originating from the Great Desolate and taste the difference in quality between the ordinary quality and regular ingredients through the  Immortal rice and Immortal vegetables.

The problem of ingredients was solved, so Gu Zheng felt much more relaxed. He had wanted to keep that Immortal Dan for use in the future, however it seems he had to use is now if he wanted to complete this damn test. There was no harm and using earlier, no matter how much of the elixir entered his stomach, none of it would be wasted.

“Scholar Gu, you came this time!”

Wang Yue opened the door. Hu Yueyue wore professional clothing, and was grinning while looking at Gu Zheng. Hu Yueyue was one meter and 6 centimeters tall, and grew up to be quite pretty. She looked like she would be the little girl next door, however, most people didn’t know that she worked in the moving industry. Not only that, but she was the owner of the moving company.

“How come it’s just you, where are the others?”

After walking in, Gu Zheng asked. They had graduated from the Chinese Department of Shanghai University. After graduation, most of the students didn’t go to editors to become professional writers, but instead went to work as civil servants. There were also some who went to look for office-jobs. Gu Zheng’s job as a gourmet writer required on a strong proficiency with the pen. However, regarding Hu Yueyue’s work with the moving company, her work had no relation to writing whatsoever.

“All them are waiting inside. You must of intentionally made us wait for you because you’re a gourmet.”

Hu Yueyue mischievously looked at Gu Zheng and dragged him by the arm inside. The room really had quite a few people, around a dozen. There were only two seats left, it seems that Gu Zheng was the last one to arrive.

“Shu Yu, you also came?”

Seeing the person sitting next to him, Gu Zheng spoke in surprise. Shu Yu was his deskmate in college, but was also known as one of his classes flowers. In fact, she was considered the best one.

“Look, I wasn’t lying! The moment Gu Zheng arrives, he would definitely recognize Shu Yu and say hello. After Shu Yu arrived, she immediately asked if Gu Zheng was coming as well!”

Hu Yueyue gave a sly smile. The twelve students watched them while laughing. Shu Yu felt somewhat embarrassed and lowered her head.  Her first question was indeed about Gu Zheng, but she merely asked about him. There was no hidden meaning. Merely, her current career and Gu Zheng had a certain connection.
