Chapter 21

There’s someone that piques my interest.

Bernhardt-sensei.

He’s the only capture target that I’m interested in, and right now he’s still a trainee teacher.

Bernhardt-sensei was under the guidance of the strict Guericke-sensei, and his job is to prepare things like printouts or help out with the classes. He always looks so busy that I couldn’t find the time to call out to him.

Either way, I’ll just erect my flag of destruction if I get close to him, which is not a good thing, but I can’t help but to still be interested in him. I mean, Bernhardt-sensei is so very cool!

The other day when there was a student that couldn’t use Wind Elementals properly, he continued teaching the student until he could understand. He’s also very skillful at using magic as well.

“Do you have anything you don’t understand?”

“I couldn’t use Wind Elementals properly…I couldn’t make out the image for it.”

He’s still a humble trainee teacher now, but once he became a licensed teacher for high school, he would have mastered being a teacher, and by then he would look very stressed. That’s also a good part of him though.

“What are you thinking about, Astrid? You’re spacing out.”

“N-No, it’s nothing. Fufufu.”

Damn you Friedrich, you just have to interrupt me in watching Bernhardt-sensei.

“Aah, I see that you’re looking at that trainee teacher.”

“Eeh…I wonder.”

Kuh…he’s sharp like mother!

“I see that he’s getting tired. His face is colored by fatigue. I bet being a trainee teacher is very difficult.”

I know, right? A trainee teacher is a difficult job, you know. Forget about the fact that this is a class full of noble children, this is a first-grader class, so of course it’s going to be hard.

So I tried my best to finish my assignments on my own so that I don’t put any more burden on sensei who was still going around teaching other kids. It would be great if this makes it easy for Bernhardt-sensei.

“Astrid-sama, are you interested in Bernhardt-sensei?”

“Hmm…just a bit. Just a tad bit.”

Miine-kun called out to me who was gazing at Bernhardt-sensei.

“You can’t do that! Your future partner shall be his majesty Friedrich!”

“Why is that decided already…”

As always, Miine-kun is desperate in shipping me and Friedrich.

“But I understand, Bernhardt-sensei is so charming, isn’t he? He’s got that mature feeling about him, so he truly fascinate me as well. We would get yelled at if we relied on Guericke-sensei, but Bernhardt-sensei will teach us until we understand.”

Right? Right? But you can’t be cheating, Miine-kun. You still have a mission to clear out that landmine called Adolf.

As I thought of that, I looked at Bernhardt-sensei again.

That student who was getting lessons from Bernhardt-sensei looked so happy! I’m jealous!

“Bernhardt-sensei,”

I decided to call out to him.

“What is it, miss Astrid?”

“I have something I don’t understand about Wind Elementals…”

Sorry, Bernhardt-sensei. I also want to be taught by you.

“Can you create something like a smoke using Wind Elemental?”

“Smoke, is it? Yes, you can do it. Should I show you?”

“By all means.”

I know how to make smoke with Wind Elementals but I still asked anyways. I bet I’ll make an impression amongst the students if I asked a high-level question.

As I thought of that plan, Bernhardt-sensei created smoke. He made a circular smoke like those puffed by someone smoking, and it rose up to the sky.

“Can I try making it?”

“Of course. I’ll be looking after you.”

Let’s try the thing I would like to try.

“Smoke!”

I imagined a smoke in the scale of a smoke screen. It’s a white one designed for military purpose, thick enough to block lasers. I imagined it bursting.

“Stop! Please stop, miss Astrid!”

I opened my eyes to Bernhardt-sensei’s yell.

And what envelops my vision is pure whiteness! Mein gott! I didn’t mean to create this much smoke!

“Void!”

I imagined nothingness and the smoke disappears.

“That was impressive…”

“I apologize for causing trouble…”

I succeeded in getting his attention, but I ended up creating an incident by flooding the place with smoke. I’m going to have to reflect upon this.

“Aah, if I recall, miss Astrid had learned the high school curriculum as well, did you not?”

“Yes, only a little bit though. Only a peek.”

My destruction flag shouldn’t rise so easily if I research well.

“If it is okay with you, could I ask you to help in making questions for the next quiz?”

“Eh? Making questions for the quiz?”

But you shouldn’t let a student do that, right…?

“I’m sure you would get full points anyways, so you can make some more appropriate questions. If  you don’t mind, can you please help me?”

“Then please leave it to me! I shall help you!”

Yes! This means I can get closer to Bernhardt-sensei!

No, wait, I can’t do that! I’ll raise my destruction end flag!

But I can’t turn down a request from Bernhardt-sensei. Yo, Heroine, can you please pick someone else other than Bernhardt-sensei? Preferably Friedrich.

“Very well, I shall see you later in the faculty office.”

“Yes, I shall go there later.”

But I wonder if it’s going to be okay for a student like me is involved in making questions for the quiz. If that Guericke-sensei hears about this then I bet he’ll blow up.

Well if it ends like that I’ll just use my position as a duke’s daughter and make it water under the bridge.

Aah, I’m really looking forward to working together with Bernhardt-sensei!

And just like that, I went to the faculty office.

In this Saint Satanachia Magic Academy, all of the teachers are from nobility as well. Or rather, the moment you get hired here, your social position would rise. I don’t know if it could be called preferential treatment or anything.

“Ah, so you’ve come, miss Astrid.”

“Yes sensei. If you would, please take this.”

I gave sensei the snacks I swiped from the Round Table.

“Is it okay? Isn’t this from the Round Table…”

“It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ll just say that I ate it.”

I answered sensei’s question thusly.

“You need sugar for your brain to work properly, so you should eat something sweet when you need to work your head or recover from exhaustion. I’m worried because I saw that your complexion is not looking good, sensei.

“My apology. There just has been so much things to do recently…”

I’ve heard that sugar contents are good for your brain—I read about it in a non-military magazine.

“Is there really so much you have to do?”

“Yes, for example I have to study to make sure I can pass to be a licensed teacher in the future and create a teaching method that takes into account each students’ strength and weaknesses. Finally in order to make sure that this teaching method doesn’t lay to waste, I need to take notes of what did not go well and think about how not to do the same mistake twice.”

Uwaah…sounds like he’s really busy.

No wonder he looks so stressed when he becomes the teacher of the high school department.

“I’ll help you with the parts I can help with in class, so by all means, let me know if there’s anything I can help.”

“Thank you…but to think I’ve started to seek help from a student…I wish I could quickly become a fully-fledged teacher already.”

You sure will. I know for a fact that you will be a high school teacher.

“You’re still a trainee teacher, so it’s okay. You have a lot that you have to do, so you can rely a bit on your student.”

“Then I think I shall take you up on your offer. Once I become a licensed teacher, I’d love to be a teacher that can encourage his students. For now, I shall do my best to aim and become a proper teacher.”

I love that positive side of his. That character which definitely won’t give up is the one caught my heart.

Friedrich always looks back to the friction between him and his father, Adolf was not confident if he can become the next leader of the Chivalric Order, while Silvio is engaging in a mini rebellion against his father because he disagrees with his father’s way of doing things. There’s really no other decent capture target than Bernhardt.

“Alright, sensei. Shall we start making the questions for the quiz? Which part of the lesson would be included in it?”

“The Nature of Spirits and the first persons to invent magic. I want the students to understand the importance of spirits in magic and the first persons that realized that importance and invented Elemental Magic.”

I see. It was clear that sensei had thought a lot about this.

“Very well, then let’s start from the current state of the spirits as of now. The variety of spirits, and—”

And thus, me and Bernhardt-sensei made the questions for the quiz together.

Bernhardt-sensei was surprised about how much I knew about the history of the people who developed magic. I loved history, so I studied about them in the library, and because of that, I was honored by Bernhardt-sensei’s surprise.

Bernhardt-sensei himself is also very smart, so he talked a lot of details about the nature of the spirits with me. I’m truly on cloud nine being able to talk about the magic that I like with the person that I like. This is a place that I could be more at ease than the Round Table.

But Bernhardt-sensei is also one of the triggers to my destruction end. I couldn’t carelessly get too close to him.

This really, really pisses me off.

Aah, seriously, Heroine, please pick literally anyone other than Bernhardt.

But if I think about it again, wouldn’t father be really upset if I were to go out with Bernhardt-sensei? I mean, he’s super strict in regards to me mingling with people of the lower classes. He’d tell his me to aim too high and at least be in a relationship with a duke family, or if possible, the royalty.

I might as well just elope with sensei as my destruction falls upon us.

Well, I’m still a 6-year-old right now, so I’m still not in sensei’s strike range just yet though.
