Chapter 4 Moving Forward

All the way down, Nange's shock is unspeakable. All He saw before him was a strange world, especially to this boy who had just reached his eighteen.

The deep, seemingly endless tall pit is a bit dilapidated now, but you can imagine what it was like then. Delicate mechanical support, a thick iron door, peculiar shape of various mechanical facilities and the sides of the pit lane with all sorts of machines that are hard for Nange to understand.

But what surprised him most was that he had been walking for a long time, and the pit was still very bright, the light seemed to come from the sides of the tunnel and even from below. All this was never mentioned by my father, nor by the town's wise elders. How many secrets does this world contain?

It was an iron door again, but on this door there was a mysterious pattern of hexagonal stars. The fluorescent pattern caught his attention. He pushed forward, but it did not move. A dry electronic voice above the iron gate said: "Hello sir, please show me your identification."

Nange stepped back in surprise.

The voice repeated. "hello Sir, please show me your identification."

"I... have no identification." He answers casually.

Above the iron door, a red light flashed at a very high frequency, and the electronic voice went off again. “Alert! Find the trespassers! Find the trespassers!"

What he saw made him slightly ludicrous.

As the alarm sounded, Nange looked around and saw a black iron rod on the left. He picked it up, the weight was ok. He used it to smash and pry, and finally opened the door in the sound of the electronic synthesis alarm. After getting into the door, he was stunned by the huge monitoring screens on the walls and the appliances around him. He knew the computer that aunt Parle worked on, but compared to what he saw. Parle's computer was like a toy.

At the bottom of the screen, there are two people with their backs to Nange, the one is sitting and another is standing, they were totally unresponsive to the arrival of Nange, their white dress seemed strange and weird to him. He was trying to question them, but it was still the nonstop "find the trespassers!”, the electronic synthesis sound.

He walked slowly to the standing man there and gave him a pat on the shoulder. With a “bang”, the man fell into a heap, and a dry skull rolled violently to the foot of him, making his heart in his mouth.
Isn't there anyone else alive in this big pit?

No, with brighter lighting in the tunnel, Nange noticed a deep line of footprints that stretched all the way to the inside of the tunnel. No one appears to have been entered here for many years, and the footprints are particularly noticeable on the thick dust. Who could it be? Brother Suoying, or the Red Wolf? Thinking of the Red Wolf, he was refreshed and quickened his pace.

Following those footprints, He turned a slope, the front of the wall askew to write a few large red words: beware of war dog! Below the scarlet letter was a skeleton, all melted away. Did the dead man also come to the war truck? But what is a war dog?

Nange will not forget the first time he saw the pit.

When he was nine years old, his father drove out of Rado with his sister and him in a freshly repaired war truck. He had never been out of town before, and was always looking out, curious about everything. As his father drove through the disused pit, the strange and desolate landscape fascinated him so much that he clamored to go down to look at it, only to receive a slap in the face of his father.

In his memory, it was the first time that in his life that his beloved father had beaten him. The father pointed to the pit outside and told him with an air of seriousness he had ever seen before: "remember, son! This is a terrible place. Never come here! Remember!

His father came to the site of the big pit to capture the golden ants, because the town's elders says their formic acid is a good cure for rheumatism which was Nange’s mother is suffering. But their luck was not good that day, and they went on a long journey without catching a single golden ant.

If anyone talks about war trucks in the big pit, it would be Uncle Pumpkin, Nange’s father, who inadvertently spoke at a rally. No one would doubt his words. His son, Nange is so proud of this.

What did father meet? Is it the frightful war dog, or some other monster?
