In the morning -- actually, it’s even earlier than that -- if you woke up at this time, then you will witness this marvelous scene along the boulevard heading to the city from the countryside. Wagons filled with milk buckets formed a long line with no end, each of them hurrying, creating a sound like a steady drumbeat. The farmers from the ranches in the outskirts repeated this job everyday. To them, as long as the people in the city wanted fresh milk, they will continue to be busy. Some were destined for this lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

Oscar started his day in the penthouse suite of Lobb Oscar hotel. He woke up feeling exhausted as he had vivid nightmares the whole night.

It was the day of departure, and the prince knew he had no time in the world to reflect and interpret those nightmares. He hurriedly washed up and left the room without having breakfast.

There were two suites in the penthouse, and early in the morning, loud screams were heard coming from the room opposite of his own. Oscar was startled as a servant girl came out from the room.

"Oh! Your Highness!" The girl promptly curtsied to the prince.

"What happened?"

"Mr Doramy said this breakfast disgusted him."

Oscar rolled his eyes in annoyance, "It’s alright, you can pass it to me."

"Yes, Your Highness." The servant handed over the breakfast tray to her master, and left after a slight bow.

Oscar found the King of Assassins’ room within seconds of entering the massive suite.

"I said I don’t want to see milk anymore! It got me feeling nauseous!"

Oscar violently pulled away the quilt off Doramy. "Hey! Stop acting like a kid!"

Doramy turned over, and was surprised to see the prince in front of him. "Oh, it’s you! What are you doing here?"

"To see you, of course! Am I not welcomed?" Oscar casted the breakfast tray aside, and sat on the chair near his old friend.

"Oh right, why didn’t you invite your fellow old friends to your birthday party yesterday?" Doramy looked at the young man, he couldn’t hide his disappointment when he said that, "You know, everyone was quite upset about it."

Embarrassed, Oscar scratched his head shyly. "Sorry! It was indeed my lack of consideration. Anyhow, I can’t let you guys be in the same room as those leaders from Secret Service Department, can I?"

"You are right, forget it about it then!" Doramy nodded.

Oscar smoothed out his old friend’s tousled hair, and suddenly he was stupefied. The King of Assassins, that demanding old man who used to occupy himself with all sorts of affairs now had full head of white hair. Oscar examined his good teacher and worthy friend carefully for the first time after a long while, and he was amazed to discover the crow’s feet webbed at the corner of his friend’s eye, and his pale chapped lips.

"You seem to have… grow taller again?" Doramy said softly, lost in thought.

"Yes! I’m already not that naïve wild boy who ran to cry in a corner after losing to you in a fight!"

"Ha… cough, cough!" Doramy, who wanted to laugh, ended up coughing violently.

"Ah… damn it! It feels like the body doesn’t belong to me no more!" The King of Assassins turned his head away, annoyed. In fact, he didn’t really wish for his friends to visit him. He didn’t want them to see him in this terrible state.

"Oh right! Are you satisfied with the well-figured, beautiful Monrovia servant girl I assigned for you?"

"Do you mean the nurse?"

"That’s right!" Oscar was excited.

"Forget about it! Although she is a Monrovian, she is too strong, and she often hurt me."

"Hurt you? Tell me more about how she hurts you." Oscar shot his old friend a dirty look.

"I know what you’re thinking, but it’s certainly not anything like that! I mean when she massages me! Do you know massage?"

"Hahaha! Ola, I understand!" Oscar nodded as he realised he misunderstood the man.

After a moment of laughter, the two men fell into an awkward silence.

"Oh God of Light! Time really does fly! In the blink of an eye you’re already all grown up! I remember you were only this tall when I first saw you!" Finally, Doramy broke the silence. "Sometimes, I feel like all these years were only but a dream, maybe… I will never get to be as happy as I’m now."

Oscar grabbed his old friend’s hand, "Hey! You’re Doramy Basinger. The Doramy Basinger that I know finds fun in any moment, and it’s not like you’re seriously ill anyway. Wait for my return, then we can go drinking together!"

"Oh, don’t mention that, I’ve long forgotten the taste of it." Doramy gave out a meaningful sigh, "I think Percy is trying to kill me with all those insane medicines, and he doesn’t even let any woman come near me. All my lovers must be missing me like crazy!"

Oscar laughed cheerfully, "Look at you, you can still grunt and complain, that means you’re yet strong and healthy! Listen to me, take care of yourself, and then you can continue to live happily with all your friends. Oh yeah! Do you know that Godot is getting married?"

"Of course!" Doramy suddenly became delighted at the mention of this topic, "That fella’s face was red as a tomato when he handed me the invitation card. Such a cute young man!"

"I heard that his lover has amazing sphincter."

Doramy immediately laughed out loud at that comment, "You mean the big girl’s waist? I bet you that it’s thicker than a pail!"

Oscar chuckled, "But… is that sphincter?"

Doramy shrugged, "Whatever, I’m sure Godot have no idea what it is too, let them figure that themselves!"

"Hahahaha!" Oscar couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into an uncontrollable laughter. Soon, he regained his composure.

"Hey friend, I have to go now!"

"That’s right, you have to go now!" Doramy turned his head over, obviously disheartened by the reminder, but almost immediately he returned his gaze to the young man. "Young fella, promise me that you wouldn’t do anything stupid. Don’t let your friends worry about you."

"Rest assured!" Oscar was already at the door, "Hey, seriously, take care!"

"You too, take care!"

The prince closed the door behind him with a soft sigh. Percy has told him more than once about Doramy’s deteriorating condition. Perhaps, this might be their eternal farewell.

***************

Cherry trees of late fall were so fruitful that their branches seemed to be at risk of snapping into half at any moment. The sweet and juicy fruits looked so red they resembled a woman’s luscious lips.

The vast blue sky seemed to stretch into infinity. The sun rays were sprinkled on cherry trees like fairy dust, decorating the space between green leaves with faint golden ripples. Slowly but steadily the cool autumn wind blew, and from time to time people found themselves trying to fasten their collars as tightly possible. Occasionally, when cherry seeds fell from the branches above, squirrels and rats immediately raced to secure them. There were no quarrels among them, as each obediently kept to the rule to only select a couple seeds to themselves.

The vast expanse of farmlands in the suburbs portrayed themselves as an endless yellow colored plain. Only a few trees stood tall alone in the middle, enviously looking at the shelter belt at the end of the field. It must be great to live with so many companions, that way they would not feel as lonely.

The wind was getting more and more violent, and the cherry tree leaves quivered uncontrollably in the cold wind. Finally, a branch that could not bear the weight of the fruits was snapped into two. The moment it dropped to the ground, squirrels and rats again busied themselves. However, this time, the tiny creatures came prepared and posed as if they were going to a battle. Perhaps the next moment they would find themselves biting at each other. After all, the fruits were too much of a seduction, they all wanted the whole branch to themselves.

The old marshal was picking cherries when His Imperial Highness Prince returned to the residence. He was deeply captivated by the intense redness of the fruits. It was so brightly colored, like fresh blood, and each cherry fruit was silhouetted by slight golden sunlight.

"You’re back!" The old man descended the ladder. Oscar hurried forward to lend him a hand.

"You didn’t come last night…" Oscar said quietly.

"It’s not suitable for an old man like me." Oscar remained quiet, and followed him to a parasol nearby. "Hey, sit down! Try some huge cherries, they are the last batch for the season!"

Oscar sat down obediently and picked up a bright red cherry. He observed it carefully before savouring the sweet taste of it in his mouth.

"Actually, I prepared a gift for your birthday." Old marshal said while taking out a thick notebook from the rattan basket. The book was filled with so many papers that it could not be closed entirely.

"Is this… is this the doctrine of the Religion of Light?" Oscar received the heavy book, rather confused. On the front cover of the book was a religious prayer.

"No! I’ve had the notebook for many years. Inside are some tactical notes I’ve summed up over the years that I believe will be helpful to you."

Oscar smoothed his hand over the cover of the thick book. With much care, he put away the priceless treasure, "Thank you very much! I’ve no idea how to express my gratitude toward you…"

"Never mind it!" Marshal Robin waved his hands, "Keep the notebook properly, but read it often. I’ve had some rather radical ideas when I was young, but things changed over time, and this change is fully reflected in the tactics I recorded over the years. Read it carefully and thoroughly so you could fully grasp the change. Of course, it’s okay to doubt my idea. I don’t want you to imitate my ways blindly, because some of the claims have not actually been put into practice."

Oscar nodded his head firmly. He has seen this notebook before, and he remembered Marshal Robin always treated it as his most valued treasure. Now, this valued treasure was handed over to himself.

"Oh right! There’s one more way this notebook could benefit you!"

The young man was confused again, "Another benefit?"

"That’s right. Although I don’t know exactly what you have experienced, but I can be sure that you have had some misunderstanding with the church, and it’s a serious problem. Remember that time when you openly criticized the Holy See’s tax policy? Do not forget that you are a Prince of Titan Empire, a member of the Andrew family. Inevitably you would have to deal with all level of priests in the future, and maintaining a good relationship with the church is the wisest choice you should take! Just like His Majesty the Third, he’s smart to remain silent even though he has his grudges and contempt toward the greedy Holy See."

Oscar failed to understand the old man, "Still, in my opinion, religion is a product of superstition from olden times. There’s just some practice and behavior that I could never get used to, for instance the punishment of burning the wronged at stake. They have burned some of the greatest scientists to death! Take the East for example, they are not too fanatical about religion, that’s why the advancement of their science, culture, manufacturing, and even their society as a whole, are progressing faster than ours."

"No, no, that’s not entirely true!" Marshal Robin shook his head violently. "This understanding of yours is extremely dangerous and one-sided! Let me give you an example, one that you can absolutely understand - Narcissus Knights of Andrew House, the guardian of holy land of the West on behalf of God of Light. Andrew would never achieve its current status and influence today if they had not taken advantage of people’s fanatical belief in religion. The most crucial is that you need to understand how to use it to your benefits! This is the fundamental root of religion!"

"I understand now, thanks to your teachings." Oscar nodded lightly.

"Actually, what I have taught you was nothing. You are a brilliant young man, and you should do what you believe is right. But remember, always reflect on your own decisions."

Oscar was lost for words. He grabbed a handful of cherries and shoved them into his mouth. Red juice like fresh blood oozed out from the corner of his mouth.

"Eat slowly, you little fella!" Marshal Robin said and passed him a napkin. Oscar seized the opportunity and placed his hand around the old man’s.

"Marshal, I wish to… I mean, I will visit you often."

The old marshal shook the young man’s hand firmly. Suddenly, he turned his head around toward the only hill of the farm.

"Look, your knights are here for you."

Oscar glanced to the same direction, and he saw a few familiar faces. It was Murat, Vick, and Kamille Rayen.

"Go get your Raytheon, I’ve already changed his horseshoes. He was quite emotional, though, and was distressed when being around his family. Perhaps he knew that he’s leaving for a long journey soon."

Marshal Robin accompanied Oscar to the stable. The Raytheon was already equipped with brand new rein and saddle on its back. It stared at its young master, then glanced back at its wife and children. All of a sudden it was dispirited.

"Come on, my friend, it’s time to leave!" Oscar caressed Raytheon’s face, and gently removed the reins fastened to the wooden pole.

Raytheon went near its wife, kissed at its neck lovingly and once again confirmed its comforting scent. The other party returned the kiss and rubbed its head softly against its husband back.

"Dear Esmeralda, I have to leave now. Take good care of our children, and never ever run away with some random man!"

"Get lost now! Although I promise you, I will be waiting patiently for your return!" Esmeralda blinked its beautiful bright eyes that was now filled with tears at its husband.

As expected, Raytheon has gotten even more upset now, and it quickly avoided its wife’s gaze. The father licked at its daughter, but the fiery red foal who didn’t like being tickled hid behind its brother.

Little Oslu looked at its mighty father with admiration and a slight hint of fear. He was afraid that its tall father would attack itself.

Raytheon examined its son and slowly nodded its head with satisfaction. Although the foal had a pair of red hooves, but it definitely looked like a pure, noble breed Raytheon warhorse!

Eventually, the stern father kissed the slightly frightened son. But that was alright, when it grew a little bit older nothing could intimidate it anymore!

Oscar jumped on the horse in one swift move. The Raytheon stood on its hind legs and neighed into the sky as it felt its rein being tugged at.

"Report to Your Excellency Marshal Robin Sparse, class leader for History of War Theoretical Research of Imperial Army batch thirty-nine has completed the required study as part of the five-year academic learning, request for retreat!"

"Your Imperial Highness Prince Lieutenant General O’Neil Andrew Morisette of Imperial Army, congratulations on your completion of study with honors, request permitted!"

"Salute!" Oscar performed an immaculate salute to the old marshal.

"Salute over!" Marshal returned the salute and immediately paced back to the stable, "Hurry and go now!"

Both Oscar and Raytheon glanced back at the stable for the last time. The rein was tugged, and almost immediately the Raytheon dashed into the direction of the hillock.

"Hey…" Esmeralda shook its beautiful red mane, and nudged softly at the old man, who it remembered as the one who helped delivered its foals. "Hey, do you see it? That big handsome fella is my husband, the father to my children, look at how handsome it is!"

Marshal Robin looked at the neighing Esmeralda, "Look! Your husband’s gone now, so is my child! But he promised to visit me soon, what a good child he is! Do you see it, the way he rides? Just like the hero in legends! I’m so proud of him!"

Esmeralda: "What are you mumbling? I don’t understand, can you speak Horse?"

Esmeralda turned its head again only to find its handsome husband was already long gone. The disappointed wife paced to another side of the stable but could still see no sight of its husband. It was completely dispirited!

On each subsequent day after, Esmeralda stared into the horizon on the racecourse, and prayed again and again to see a black figure rushing toward it, to kiss and make love to it. But... only disappointment arrived day after day. As the wife of a Narcissus warrior horse, this was the fate of Esmeralda. It’s husband’s final settling place would always be the battlefield. Its Raytheon would never return to her side!

Regardless of seasons, afternoon markets in University Town always buzzed with life and excitement. The last book sale of each year fell on every November. Exquisitely made cupboards were filled with a variety of well-packaged books. All these books were of certain values and their prices extremely expensive. Young people gathered in the streets in small groups. They enjoyed visiting the booksellers situated at the back of alleys, which normally had their products packed in small leather cases. Those were small bags full of treasures, either contained with prohibited science books or pornographic books and periodicals offensive to the eyes.

People often lost themselves having to choose between the prohibited science books or yellow pornographic materials. To choose was human instinct, but to make an appropriate choice was the symbol of wisdom. If one could make their decision on this matter without regret, then congratulations to them on their success.

All of the sudden, a dense dark cloud covered the sky and casted a shadow over the earth. Sounds of thunders were also heard from afar. The sun miraculously disappeared in an instant, only few light rays managed to squeeze themselves through the tiny gap in between cloud bank. Soon enough, grey clouds came around, and even the last ray of light in the sky was gone. People hurried to leave the streets and hid under the eaves of their houses while anxiously looked around. The sounds of thunder gradually grew louder. People searched for the lightning, but those tall buildings around them completely obscured their sight.

Rainstorm was coming! It seemed like today was not a good day to travel!

The base camp of Narcissus Knights Red Tiger Assault Division was in a complete chaos. Panicked soldiers seized the final few moments before the downpour to arrange and put away their battle equipment and baggage. War horses paced uneasily back and forth as the thunder rolled. Murat constantly asked the soldiers to bring along their rain gears, but the final result on the random checks he conducted made him depressed. Didn’t his men know that cooking appliances were the most important? Weapons could be collected along the way, but appliances for cooking were definitely more difficult to come by.

During the whole time, Murat rushed from one squadron to another. When he looked at his fresh and young soldiers, he frowned as he realised he was screwed! The Red Tiger was no longer the former heroic division. In the recent years, veterans who fought with Murat for many years either retired or was transferred back to Narcissus County, and he was left with only these bunch of silly young boys. Although Murat knew clearly of their ability and strength, truth was none of them had any real experience of killing. Moreover, His Imperial Royal Highness had given a clear account of the deteriorating situation in the north, and having to lead such a group of young guys into the battlefield made the major general immensely worried!

Oscar revealed two documents stamped with different official seals from his arms and passed them over to Murat.

"This is the imperial envoy signed by His Majesty the Third, with this document those local military regions would have to greet us as if we were the Emperor. And this! In fact, this is what I regard with more importance. It’s the permit signed by Marshal Alan which allow us to grab whatever supply we’re lack of!"

Murat received the document with much care and delicately put them away in a small metal box.

"What’s wrong? Anything bothering you?" Oscar asked the obviously troubled man.

"It’s not exactly a bother, but I’m worried about our fresh young soldiers, they…"

Oscar waved his hand impatiently, "Murat, you’re behaving more and more like a concerned father, except you’re still not married, also you should…"

"Okay, forget it!" Murat raised his hands, "Pretend that I’ve said nothing."

Oscar patted the division commander who has been by his side for the past five years, "Don’t worry too much, Red Tiger is still as strong as ever! Moreover, we’re only going to perform some regular inspection and experience the life over there, nothing bad would happen."

Murat nodded obediently, "Hopefully so."

"Report!"

"Enter!"

Oscar recognised his messenger’s voice and turned to the direction of the sound.

"Your Highness, Division Commander, General Abassia, the carriage is ready," Wellington couldn’t hide his excitement as he spoke. The young man was greatly delighted as he had recently been promoted to a Major!

General Gondol Abassia appeared to be confused, "Um… is anyone of you intending to leave the base camp?"

"I have to make a trip back home," Oscar straightened his messy desk then threw all those documents in Murat’s way, "I have to go now, the ladies are waiting for me. See you in a while."

"No wonder," General Abassia said in a bantering voice, "It’s definitely a difficult task to bid goodbye with the ladies."

"That’s absolutely true!" Oscar forced out a smile.

With his only good hand, Gondol picked up a paper map, "Though as your Military Advise Officer, I have to take up little bit of your time."

"What’s the matter?" Oscar returned to his seat.

"It’s regarding your intention mentioned earlier, about the search for a location in the Northern Region to rest and reorganise the troop while waiting to meet with Captain Krapitch Drake and his infantry division. According to their current speed, they need at least two and a half months to arrive north from the eleventh region, and that’s already my most optimistic bet!" General Abassia said and traced his finger to a city drawn on the map, "Therefore, I’ve selected this location, Grizzly Castle, the base camp Sukhoi House, as our meeting point."

Oscar turned to look at Murat, "What do you think?"

Murat nodded, "That shouldn’t be a problem, Grizzly Castle is about five hundred kilometers away from the frontier. It should be safe for us to take a short rest there."

"It’s decided then, you can discuss the detail with Abassia later, as I really have to go now! Excuse me please." Oscar left the room in a hurry, but seconds later he remembered that he still had not thought of what excuse to tell Sasha and Annie.

The rainstorm finally fell. Initially, it started with some sparse but gigantic droplets the size of paddy grains. Drop by drop they hit on the roof, producing clear crisp sounds. Within seconds it turned into a heavy downpour. Accompanying the deafening roars of thunders was a massive flood that poured from the cloudy grey sky above.

Rain water gathered on both sides of the street and reunited to become one stream after another. The water was extremely filthy, as it contained dust and dross from the ground. The slab stone that received a massive shower was washed clean to reveal its original bright green color. Moss gathered in the dark corners also spread uncontrollably to its surrounding under the irrigation of rain. Some people who hurried in the rain inadvertently slipped on the ground after stepping on the thick layer of algae.

Eventually, Oscar’s carriage arrived at the residence. He was aware that he had missed lunch.

"I’m back!"

He said while removing his rain cape in the porch, but was stunned at the sight awaiting him in the front of his own house. Annie. Aeolia, Fenrar, Captain Vick, all his old friends from Damorga, and the well-dressed Highness Princess Catalina were staring at him.

"Ola! It’s perfect that everyone’s here!" Oscar laughed out of excitement. "But… where is my lovely sister Sasha?"

"She’s resting in her room. She hasn’t eaten anything since last night." Annie came up to him and hung his rain cape on the rack.

"Everyone… please wait for me in the hall…"

Before Oscar could finish his sentence, Princess Catalina threw herself in his arm and planted a full kiss onto Oscar’s lips.

After what seemed like forever for the audience who witnessed this shocking scene, their lips finally parted.

"In my home country, this is the only gift a woman can give to her lover who’s going out for an expedition."

"Lover?" Oscar said bitterly. He wasn’t sure if he would not fall short of Catalina’s expectation.

All of a sudden Catalina rushed straight into the rain. She had no idea why she said something like that. Everything that happened since the incident of the big black beast to the delivery of Esmeralda’s foals seemed like only a dream. She still vividly remembered the innocent look on Oscar’s face when she pulled on his head the first time they met. She also remembered clearly how happy she was when he carried her on his shoulder and ran across the vast field. She would also never forget the trembling and excitement she felt when they shared their first kiss. Catalina knew she should tell him earlier, and in fact she had vowed to tell him the news. Her mother arranged for her to marry with a distinguished naval general back home, someone whom she only called by uncle! In the end, she discovered that dream didn’t exist. In the end, Catalina kissed her lover farewell for the last time in the life, and ran away before he could see her cry. Enjoying the showers of rain, she allowed herself to enjoy the sweet feeling of first love, also ironically, the despair of first love. This was her only choice and also her best choice to end the relationship, wasn’t it?

"Wellington!" Oscar called out and wiped his lips with the back of his hand, "Send out a couple of knights to tail Catalina. What’s the matter with her?"

Aeolia stood forward, "Don’t worry, Catalina is returning home soon. She is going to get married, West Percy Kingdom has informed all diplomatic envoys of each country on the date for her wedding."

Oscar was speechless for a moment, then he shot the countess a look of despise.

"My Aeolia, you really know everything, don’t you?"

Aya remained silent, and quietly retreated to the side.

Wellington the messenger immediately put on his own rain cape, "Your Highness, I’ll go check on Her Highness Princess Catalina myself if that’s okay?"

Oscar nodded, "Alright, and get a carriage for her too, she might fall sick after exposing herself in the rain. Hurry up! Why are you still standing here?"

Wellington quickly turned around and ran into the rain. Oscar looked at his receding figure for a while, lost in his own thought. It was only until then that he realised how mean he has been toward the girl. Now that he reflected on it, how wonderful was the happy-go-lucky Catalina!

Oscar shook his head from left to right as if to clear the thought off his mind, "Sasha… is she in her room?"

Annie shook her head, "She has been living in your room for the past two years, claiming all your things as her own."

"Ola! This girl is still behaving like her young self, always claiming my things as her own!" Oscar laughed while shaking his head slightly, "If you all could wait for me in the hall, although I’m not sure how to tell Sasha…"

"Hurry on!" Annie pushed the young man forward, and suddenly she realised how much the child has grown. Oh God! He was so tall now! She was lost in her own thoughts as she watched Oscar’s receding figure. All of a sudden, she smiled happily to herself as she was reminded of the time when this tiny baby in his swaddling clothes pissed on her face. Her smile was so bright, so beautiful.

Rain droplets the size of bean was still falling on the window when a small glow of light steadily moved in the dark corridor. Suddenly a loud thunder was heard and Oscar immediately fastened his pace, Sasha was utmost frightened of thunder!

Perhaps she had been anticipating his arrival, the door to the room was not locked, and Oscar silently let himself in. However, he was a little confused by the sight in front of him.

Sasha was dressed in a beautiful green dress, and on her hair was that jade green dragonfly. Young Lady was meticulously painting some moisturiser over her toenails on her milk like soft skin.

"I thought you would jump right into my arms like you used to whenever the thunder rolls."

Calmly, Sasha raised her head, "People never stop growing up, I’ve learned how to take care of myself after these two years."

"I’m sorry!"

Sasha shook her head softly, and jumped off from the Polar Bear sofa. Despite the cold on the ground, she walked barefoot toward the French windows and pushed them opened. A soul-stirring scenery of the rain came into view.

Oscar hugged his sister from behind, "You’ve grown taller again!"

Sasha turned around to face her brother, "And your hugs are getting stronger!"

Oscar smiled at his sister, but almost immediately he put on a serious face again, "Sasha, in all seriousness though, you have two choices now. Either you go home to our parents, or you could stay in Swan Hill Castle, and wait for my return."

"You swore in front of the boundary monument that you would never leave me…"

"Sasha, please!" Oscar turned his head away in anguish. If he had the choice, he would never leave his sister, and all the people who loved and cared for him. However, things needed to progress, to change.

"Listen to my suggestion Sasha, listen to me." Oscar intentionally avoided Young Lady’s eyes that were filled with tears. "You know, honestly I would prefer if you return home, Dulin is not suitable for you. In Narcissus County, you could…"

"No!" Abruptly, Sasha raised her head and stared into her brother’s eyes. "If there is nothing I could change about the situation, I will choose to stay and wait for your return in Swan Hill Castle…" By this time Young Lady was crying so much she could hardly speak. She knew his oath was only a white lie to comfort her. He was a son of Andrew House, after all, and he was destined to the battlefield like the rest of the knights of their family. On the other hand, the lives of ladies of Andrew House were filled with endless waiting. That was the inevitable fate of Andrew House.

All he could do now was to hug his sister tightly in his arms. He could feel her palpitating with fear, her body warmth, and her steaming hot tears.

After a long moment, Young lady poked her head out from Oscar’s embrace, "I almost forgot, I’ve received a letter from Alanis. Although it was addressed to me, she wanted me to pass over some message."

"What was it?"

"She apologised for the argument previously and asked for your forgiveness, also she mentioned about her being occupied with a grand-scale charity event and regrets that she couldn’t see you off."

"Don’t care about her, let her have her own fun!"

Tears gave way to smiles, and Sasha playfully hit on her brother’s shoulder, "This is what Alanis dislikes the most about you, don’t forget she’s your fiancée."

"So are you!" Oscar said while kissing Sasha gently on her lips. As expected, this was the best way to stop her from speaking.

"Come over here to the sofa, my darling!" Oscar dragged his sister to the "Polar Bear".

Sasha had no idea what he was going to do, but she listened and sat down obediently anyway.

Oscar knelt down to one knee, and removed the huge precious ring from his finger. With much surprise, Sasha covered her mouth with both hands in all excitement.

"Lady Sasha E Nedgabel Andrew, are you interested in being my fiancée?"

Sasha wanted to nod, but at the same time she also wanted to shake her head. In the end, tears washed her beautiful sweet face.

Oscar held his sister’s hand and examined her delicate fingers. Before this, he had the ring recast for himself, but it was now too large for his sister’s slender fingers. Anyhow, this was her worry now.

"My darling! Do you know? When I was much younger, about the time my mother was gravely ill, she called me to her sick bed and presented me with this ring. I remember she told me to only gift this to my beloved in the future. God! How on earth would I know what my beloved meant at that time? Later, I tried giving this ring to Annie, because she treated me the best, but she wouldn’t take it. I can’t remember exactly how it happened, but somehow the ring vanished into thin air, and I completely forgot about this. Only until later that I knew the ring was confiscated by Alfa III that old man. Anyway, he returned it to me. And now, I’m presenting it to you, my beloved!"

Oscar straightened Sasha’s thumb, and slipped that ring around it. As expected, the gold ring reached the base of her thumb in one swift move.

Sasha’s gaze did not leave the shiny ring for even a split second. That’s right! That was her wedding band!

Oscar suddenly pinched at his sister’s nose. "I have to warn you, Alanis knows the story behind the ring, and it’s probably for the better if she doesn’t see this on you, if not I’m sure she would die of jealousy."

Sasha covered her treasure with another hand. "Never! I’m going to recast the ring, and if possible I would have it fixed on my finger for ever so that it would never come off. Alanis can die of jealousy all she wants! Do you know how envious I was when you proposed to her? Now it’s finally her turn!" Sasha carefully extended her fingers and examined her sapphire ring with much admiration.

Oscar laughed while simultaneously shaking his head. His sister was a woman too, naturally she would have the attributes all women possessed.

"Tell me Sasha, how can you be so adorable? I’m always so fascinated by you."

Sasha was immensely happy in her heart but she pretended to give him an annoyed stare. In the end, she relented and kissed Oscar fully on his lips as she was extremely delighted by his flattery!

"Take good care of yourself!" Oscar got back to his feet and rubbed at his slightly numb knee.

"Are you leaving now?" Sasha sprung from the sofa. She was so engrossed with happiness she almost forgotten today was the day for her brother’s departure. "You… promise me! Don’t let me wait forever like the rest of the women in our house."

Oscar rolled his eyes, "My dear Sasha, I’m not going to pick troubles with the Persians, and it’s not as if there was any other war happening currently in the empire."

"Hush!" Sasha suddenly shouted, "I have incredibly strong instinct. It’s definitely not all peace and quiet in the north, I’ve heard so much about Deiss. You… make sure you…"

"I swear!" Oscar grabbed his sister’s hands, "I swear by blood to you in the name of God of Light, that I will returned to your side as scheduled, and then…"

Suddenly he found his lips covered by Sasha’s!

When their lips reluctantly parted, Sasha turned her back toward him.

Oscar planted a gentle kiss on the top of his sister’s head and tried his best to remember her scent. Slowly and unwillingly, he turned to open the door.

No one was in the hall. Everyone was waiting for him at the bottom of the staircase.

Oscar descended the stairs, and he hugged and blessed everyone as he bid his goodbyes, "Vick, Ricky, my Dulin home is now under your care!""Godot, send my blessing to the bride, I hope she likes the little villa I prepared for the wedding.""Aeolia, you have to take care too, don’t work late until midnight each day.""And Fenrar, stop crying, will you? It’s not like I’m not coming back?""Lady Keegan, may I kiss you, you have been an excellent helper to me!""Ferry, you big man! Let go of me! Are you trying to strangle me to death? Look after Young Lady when I’m not around. Don’t look at me like this! I mean that you must scare off all the flies that dare to harass her, especially when she is out."

"Alright! That’s about it! It’s estimated that my schedule would take about a year’s time. It’s not too long at all! Cheer up, I’m not dead yet, am I?"

Annie’s hand flew to young Oscar’s mouth. It has been a while since she last did this.

"You silly boy! Take back your words, and ask God of Light for forgiveness!"

"O…kay…o…kay!" Oscar immediately asked to be forgiven, "God of Light, forgive my rashness, if you can pretend that I’ve not say anything offensive, thank you!"

Annie murmured silently under her breath. She couldn’t understand the young man, why would he say something not auspicious like this on the day of departure!

"Hurry on! Your knights have been waiting long for you under the eaves." Annie said as she dragged Oscar to the corridor.

"I beg you all" Oscar turned to look at the crowd, "Enter the house! All of you! Occupy yourself with something else, I don’t need all of you to send me off."

The crowd slowly dispersed after they presented their utmost sincere blessing to Oscar.

"Much better! It’s just the two of us now!" Oscar blew light air into Annie’s air.

The Lady Countess shied away, her face red with embarrassment. Slowly, she removed his rain cape off the rain rack.

"There’s no need for that, I’m going into the carriage immediately anyway." He shook his head, but his gaze suddenly sparkled. "Annie, if I may ask, have you considered what I suggested to you earlier?

Annie was stunned for moment, but she nodded earnestly, "I did consider it, but I…"

He pressed his fingers on Annie’s lips gently, "Stop overthinking, and patiently wait for my return. I can’t leave your side, just like how you can’t leave my side, and you know that is the truth. You’re my only concern, you know that? Even Sasha, she’s tough and knows how to protect herself. Only you, my dear Annie! I’m worry only for you! You’re the one who accompanied me throughout the first half of my life, not anyone else!"

By this time, Annie was already crying her heart out. Oscar sighed softly, he wasn’t intending to make the lady weep.

"Annie, you’ve never left my side, and I’m slow to realise this fact only know, you’ve never left my side no matter what! Oh God! From the moment of my birth until now! Therefore, I’m extremely worried about you. I’m leaving for an expedition soon, and what should happen to my dear Annie?"

Annie wiped her messy face hastily. She decided this was not the moment for her to be emotional, she should let the young man to leave with ease.

"I promise to take care of myself, and also Sasha, and also…"

Oscar kissed the woman who has always been like a mother figure to him. It wasn’t until this moment that he finally confirmed his own feelings for Annie. Although he rushed for the Young Lady as soon as he arrived home, it was Annie that he could never let go.

"Don’t forget what you promised," Oscar lovingly wiped the tears off Annie’s face and caressed the faint crow’s feet at the corner of her eyes.

"No, I swear to never forget!"

"So… I’m really leaving now!"

Annie nodded again, and placed the rain cape into Oscar’s hand.

He kissed the beautiful lady once more, and without turning back, he walked into the rain.

"Goodbye, my young man!" Annie stood by the side of the door, and waved at the receding silhouette.

Oscar ascended into the extravagant carriage, inside were his old friends. Poison Doctor Percy, the prince’s personal doctor, also the physician-in-charge for Red Tiger Division. Paladin Sarlat, the former palace guard of the Titan Empire who used a rapier like a mythical hero. Snowstorm, the King of Assassins, the prince’s top personal guard who never leaves his side like his waist belt.

The carriage eventually started to move. Oscar opened the carriage window to enjoy the raining scenery. From afar, Oscar saw the open French window, and noticed Sasha was still leaning against the window, her long dress fluttering as the cold wind blew. Young Lady stretched her fingers and waved her hands slowly. She hoped her brother could see that the wedding band was already placed in the right place.

The carriage steadily drifted away, and finally disappeared in sight.
