“Yo, you probably don’t know that there’s only one position advertised, right? Either you get the job, or one of us does, so once we walk out of Qilin, neither of us will meet again. No one’s scared of you. If you’re so sure the job is yours, then you don’t need to make life difficult for us. If our efforts to apply for the job end in failure, then what use is it to grumble about here? Idiot.”
Ruan Danchen said not a single word throughout the entire sequence of events. However, she could not help but think about how much of a dunderhead the woman beside her was.
Yao Jingfei’s face turned redder and redder. Everyone else there had no chance of getting the job, yet they were all calling her a pretentious fool!
Her anger was so great that she wanted to give her daddy a call and ask him to show them who was boss!
At that moment, a voice echoed from the corridor. “This way, please.”
Manager Luo then appeared. Behind him were two people who were pushing a cart of mineral water.
Ruan Danchen looked over in amazement. She thought to herself, ‘I can’t believe that Qilin is showing such hospitality. They’re even giving water to those who came for the written exam.’
She then watched as Luo Yushu smiled at her, took two bottles of water from the cart, and walked over to her.
Before he reached her though, he was stopped.
Yao Jingfei blocked his way. Her expression suggested that she was extremely familiar with him and she smiled, saying, “Manager Luo.”
It was a far cry from her despotic manner earlier.
Luo Yushu was stunned for a moment. He blinked his eyes a few times, and from his actions, it seemed as though he did not recognize who Yao Jingfei was.
She did not get angry and simply said sweetly, “Manager Luo, you couldn’t possibly forget me, right? My daddy brought me to Qilin’s annual party last year.”
Luo Yushu racked his brains to try and recall it. All of the company’s employees would bring their family members to Qilin’s annual party. He, too, brought his wife and daughter over. With so many people making introductions to one another, the influx of information was so overwhelming that no one could have remembered who was who.
As for Yao Jingfei, however, Luo Yushu had some recollection of who she was.
He would have long forgotten the family members of some normal employee, and the only ones that made an impression on him was those higher-ups.
Luo Yushu dug up his memories fervently and finally let out a chuckle. Although he was not too sure, he feigned his confidence to make him look like he remembered everything clearly, and said, “Hehehehe, I remember, I remember. You’re the darling daughter of Board Member Yao. Miss Yao, right?”
Yao Jingfei knew all along that a figure as important as her father would have to be remembered by a small-time manager like Luo Yushu. Under normal circumstances, it was beneath her to be greeting Luo Yushu—in her mind, Luo Yushu was supposed to be the one greeting her.
However, she did not wait for him to do so because she wanted to use that as an opportunity to showcase her reputation.
“You have a good memory, Manager Luo,” Yao Jingfei smiled and said.
“Are you here for the exam, Miss Yao?” Luo Yushu looked at Yao Jingfei and snuck a glance at Ruan Danchen.
What was he going to do if the examiner kicked the general manager’s future wife in order to please Board Member Yao?
Board Member Yao was nothing more than a member of Qilin’s board, far more inferior than the Qi family. He had a feeling that the general manager would know if Ruan Danchen came to apply for the job, especially since Qi Chengyue personally brought her up.
Getting into Qilin was a tough task, and those who came for the exam were determined to see it through. Under normal circumstances, few would leave unless a pressing matter forced them to. That was the reason prospective applicants came in hordes whenever one or two of vacancies popped up on rare occasions.
The vacancy popped up only a few days earlier, and after saying goodbye to Qi Chengyue and Ruan Danchen earlier, Luo Yushu could not shake the feeling that something was off. It was like the particular position was specifically opened up for Ruan Danchen.
Thus, he went to the design department and asked the manager there, but the answer he got was that the manager had no clue either. Human resources simply emailed and asked for a vacancy to be advertised.
“Yes,” Yao Jingfeng said confidently. “Immediately after I graduated, my dad told me that there was an opportunity here in Qilin, so here I am.”
“Oh, hehe,” Luo Yushu laughed dryly. “I didn’t expect that you studied design?”
“Well, since my dad’s a board member here, I’ve always wanted to be a part of Qilin. Luckily, I also have an interest in design,” Yao Jingfei smiled and said. From the corner of her eye, she glanced at everyone who was standing there and felt incredibly pleased to see all of them looking exceedingly unhappy.
“I see.” Luo Yushu nodded and smiled. The only thing on his mind was to escape from Yao Jingfei, since he did not care much for Board Member Yao at all. It was not like Board Member Yao was the ultimate authority in the company—the most important thing was to make sure that the Qi family was happy.
Luo Yushu waved to the subordinates behind him and said, “Go ahead and give everyone some water. They must be really tired from waiting here so long.”
He placed one of the bottles he was holding to Yao Jingfei, and before the woman could open her mouth, he went past her and walked to Ruan Danchen. He did his best to refrain from accidentally calling her the general manager’s woman, but his eyes were filled with reverence as he handed over the other bottle to Ruan Danchen. “You must be tired from waiting here so long.”
“…” Ruan Danchen was well aware that Luo Yushu wanted to come over to her. It was just by chance that Yao Jingfei blocked his way.
Yao Jingfei still sported a smug look, perhaps because she continued to believe that Luo Yushu came just to see her.
“Thank you,” Ruan Danchen said and took the bottle from him.
Luo Yushu said immediately, “You’re most welcome. Have you been waiting here long? Are you tired? Is everyone else tired?”
One after the other, the crowd courteously said no, and Ruan Danchen followed suit as well.
Yao Jingfei snickered from beside. ‘These people are just trying to fawn over Luo Yushu by answering as a crowd. Luo Yushu wasn’t even asking any of them. He’s obviously worried that I’m tired of standing here.
‘And all these bottled water? Everyone’s just benefiting from my presence. Luo Yushu probably felt awkward to make it too obvious.’
“Hehe, alright then. It’s almost time for the exam. The examiner’s coming here soon, please be patient, everyone,” Luo Yushu said. He left one of the workers there and said, “If any of you need anything, just let him know.”
Once he said that, he left immediately. Thinking that it was probably inappropriate to just ignore Yao Jingfei, he went up to her and courteously said a few things before leaving.
Yao Jingfei was elated that Luo Yushu paid special attention to her. She thought to herself how kind of a manager he was. It would not be good to let his hard work go unnoticed, so she decided that she would say a few good things about him to her father when she got back.
Luo Yushu made a mad dash to Qi Chengyue’s office and knocked on the door a few times.
He went in and saw Cheng Dongge there, and at the same time, Qi Chengyue’s face was slightly red.
Luo Yushu smiled and greeted, “Special Assistant Cheng.”
Cheng Dongge returned the smile and greeting before turning to Qi Chengyue, saying, “I’ll go back now.”
Still blushing, Qi Chengyue answered, “Mm.” Her awkward uneasiness was still present even though Cheng Dongge had left.
“Miss Qi, when I went to check up on Miss Ruan, I didn’t expect to see Board Member Yao’s daughter as a candidate for the exam,” Luo Yushu said.
“Board Member Yao?” Qi Chengyue’s brain was a bit slow at that moment. She needed some time to mull over it. “What’s she butting in here for?”
At that instant, Luo Yushu understood that the position was created specifically for Ruan Danchen. He heard rumblings about Ruan Danchen’s issues in Chengshi, and Qilin’s General Manager seemed intent on keeping a close eye on her and taking care of her.
“I heard that Board Member Yao told her about the opportunity and allowed her to come,” Luo Yushu explained. “If Miss Ruan wasn’t there, Yao Jingfei would be the insider’s choice to take the position. When I was on my way here, I also managed to find out that Board Member Yao has spoken to a few of our people and told them about his intentions to let his daughter get in Qilin.”
“What a loony! He thinks Qilin belongs to his family, doesn’t he? Does he think that he can do as he pleases and let anyone in?” Qi Chengyue said unhappily.
“What I’m worried about is that the examiner this time is one of those people that he had a word with. What if they don’t know Miss Ruan’s status and eliminated her for real?” Luo Yushu asked.
“I understand.” Qi Chengyue made a phone call right away.

After some more waiting, Ruan Danchen was surprised to see Qi Chengyue coming over with Luo Yushu behind her.
“Everyone, I’m very sorry, but the invigilator cannot make it today. I’ll be taking over,” Qi Chengyue said. She then told Luo Yushu to open up the entrance to the meeting room.
“Miss Chengyue.” Once again, Yao Jingfei walked over and greeted, causing everyone else to roll their eyes.
Qi Chengyue was no Luo Yushu, and never in hell would she give face to that woman. She stopped walking and looked at Yao Jingfei with much suspicion. “And you are?”
Yao Jingfei’s smile tensed up and she said embarrassedly, “Yao Qingzhi is my daddy. You and I met during the annual party.”
“Is that so?” Qi Chengyue smiled plainly. “I probably couldn’t remember because there were so many people there.”
She went into the meeting room immediately after answering the question with composure, leaving Yao Jingfei drowning in shame.
Someone then pfft-ed, and the rest of them joined in the laughter.
“Well, apparently she’s not that great,” someone whispered.
Yao Jingfei was so incensed that her face looked like she suffered a stroke. She followed everyone into the meeting room and waited for Luo Yushu to hand out the papers for everyone to answer.
As expected, Yao Jingfei was the first one to hand in her paper. She puffed out her chest and passed it up confidently before heading out. She did not forget to shoot a look of sarcastic disdain toward everyone there. Ruan Danchen wanted to avoid attracting too much attention, so she did not hand in her answers immediately even though she knew all the questions beforehand and finished rather quickly. She waited to hand in until after a few people handed in theirs.
Qi Chengyue took the paper and gave Ruan Danchen a sly wink. Ruan Danchen could not help but smile in return, and she left soon after that.
Once she reached the elevator, she looked at the time and saw that it had not struck three yet. She then felt torn between going home immediately or giving Qi Chenglin a visit.
She was already at Qilin and felt like going to meet him. She had been missing him since she stepped foot into the building.
‘You’re not coming in?” Two candidates who attended the exam asked her as they were also waiting for the elevator.
Ruan Danchen shook her head. “You guys can go first. I’ll head to the restroom for a bit.”
The other two then left.
Ruan Danchen took out her phone and gave Qi Chenglin a call.
It took only three rings for Qi Chenglin to pick up. Ruan Danchen smiled uncontrollably when she heard his rich gentle voice through the phone. A warmness came over her entire being.

Yan Beicheng: “Such convoluted plans just to give your wife a job. It’s too embarrassing for us men to see how the Qi family’s men spoil their wives.”
“…” Qi Chengzhi was still holding the cell phone, and all of a sudden, he said, “Did you hear that, Lin Chu? I can’t imagine how good of temper you must have. If it was me, I’d lose it by now.”
