The next day after the ceremony, the royal army departed from the capital.

As for their course, they will be advancing straight to towards the southern border, aiming the wide plains called Sobakrien, located between the Meniel Dukedom and Fort Assasimo. Due to the slow marching speed of the Imperial army, they are anticipating that it would become the battlefield – and thinking that a battle in the plains a major advantage for the side with greater troops, they planned for an effective use of their numerical advantage against the Imperial Army.

For four days the Royal Army succeeded in increasing the number of soldiers by absorbing the locals as planned, putting a total of 60 000 soldiers to Sobakrien.

And five hours later after the army set camp in Sobakrien, clouds of dust could be seen from the grassland, and the figures of black Imperial Soldiers began to fill the horizon.

“Your Majesty. They’re here!”

“I know. Mepler, I’m entrusting the command to you. Don’t fail me”

“Yes, your Majesty. Then, after this, May I leave to his Majesty the written appeal for starting the war? It would be much appreciated”

“I see. Then let’s start the preparations”

Then as per Orado’s instructions, the upper echleons led by Mepler began the preparations for battle at once. As the Chief of Staff, Ahamad’s eyes, amidst of the preparations for the initial clash, occasionally shone as not to overlook the movement of the Shalem faction placed in the left wing of the Royal Army.

In this battle, the strategy that Mepler and the military officials set up consisted of two stages - luring then encirclement.

First they divide the whole army into three divisions1; the first consisting of foot soldiers, cavalry and magic swordsmen, the second consisting of archers and magic soldiers, and the third to establish the headquarters. Then, they extend their baits, the vanguard which is the first division, towards the enemy frontlines. When the enemy begins to take the bait, the first division slowly fishes out the enemy frontlines towards the second division, destroying them with archers and magic soldiers, then when the enemy army breaks into confusion, the entire army will attempt to break through their center.

However, this will only be effective if the vanguard successfully lures out the frontlines of the enemy army. If in case the first doesn’t work, comes their second strategy. By lowering the speed of the first division’s advancement, and advancing the second and third teams to the left and right flanks, they intend to surround the enemy like a crescent moon, utilizing the power of their numbers to their advantage.

“Your Majesty, All the preparations are complete! We are ready to go!”

Upon receiving reports from each unit, Mepler told Orado that the troops are ready for battle anytime.

“Alright then. Issue the manifesto that we’re heading out. Is this correct, Mepler?”

“Of course, Your Majesty. In fact, all the soldiers have been waiting eagerly just to hear the voice of His Majesty’s departure order”

Towards Mepler’s excited response, Orado’s mood for his fist campaign was uplifted a bit, and after nodding once, he then faced towards the soldiers, and spoke with a large voice.

“All brave officers and men of the Claris Kingdom! Right now as we speak, our enemy, the Empire together with their foul ambitions is approaching towards us to invade our country! However, remember! Behind us, are the two million people of Claris Kingdom, which also includes your family and friends! And now they are trembling right in fear of the Empire’s shadow. For that, I Orado Fon Eltobourgh, am promising you, soldiers of the kingdom, by fighting together with you in this battlefield, we will successfully defend and protect them from these atrocities! With this, I hope you will promise me too. Together with me, to fight together to protect our country, and banish the enemies from our lands! Troops, onward!”

““Uuuooooooooooooooo!””

The response in front of him was a deafening roar from the Royal Army. Orado then unsheathed his sword before him, pointed it towards the sky, and together with a shout then pointed the tip of the swords at the Empire’s forces.

“First division, advance!”

At his signal, the first division of the Claris Army drew their weapon of choice, and while maintaining their formation, they gradually advanced towards the Imperial Army. The moment the foot soldiers, cavalry and magic swordsmen reached halfway through the enemy lines,

“Second division, ready!”

He gave the second signal, and the second division prepared their spells and nocked their arrows onto their bows, as they watch over the movements of their vanguard. However, despite their movements, the Empire didn’t even move an inch in front of them.

“Your Excellency, the enemy didn’t move even though we are already in front of them!”

Upon hearing the report of his subordinates, Mepler clicked his tongue.

“The fish is too stubborn to lure out. Chief of Staff, why do you think?”

Mepler asked Ahmad beside him, who then responded immediately.

“The enemy has fewer troops than ours. Perhaps in the fear of their frontline being pierced through, they wouldn’t afford to take the chance to charge forward. If only we charged with the same number of troops as them, then we would have better chances of luring them out”

“I see. You have a point in there. So, what should we do?”

“If you leave the first team as it is, as the number of enemies are smaller, even if we have similar number of casualties as them, we will still prevail. As the enemy also knows this, they won’t proactively attack us. In order to effectively use our numerical advantage, we can go as planned and lay the crescent moon formation, and aim to encircle the enemy at all sides, or we could pull away the vanguard completely, and devote ourselves to a defensive battle of attrition. We are superior in terms of logistics after all”

Ahmad presented two proposals, following the initial plan of surrounding them in case the enemy didn’t take the bait, and the defensive maneuver based on the tactics he taught during his instructor years.

“Hmmm, the plan of going defensive didn’t sound bad at all. However, the first division’s marching order came directly from the King. Since it is not easy to cancel that order that easily. Let’s decide to go with the first option and advance the entire army instead”

Mepler, in order to save the king’s honor said that as he sent orders to delay the advance of the first division. And to all the remaining forces, he then issued a marching order to catch up to the vanguard.

However, outside the expectations of Ahmad and Mepler, the first division did not move as they have expected.

“Regiment Commander! We have received orders to slow down our advance!”

“What? Slow down you say?”

Murtina, who was the commander of the Magic Regiment in the First Division, frowned at the report of his subordinates.

“Yes sir. Because the enemy did not take our bait, so all troops are now to head on to the enemy at once”

“The enemy is not picking up because these guys are afraid of our charges. In fact, they haven’t even moved an inch from the start. Why we have to be wary of such a frightened opponent?”

“That may have a point, but…”

Though the subordinate is somewhat hesitating with his superior’s belligerent behavior, he couldn’t find any words to refute him.

“Hmph. I’m pretty sure those in the troop headquarters are only worried of us hogging all the fame and glory. There is no need to slow our advance, for you all have an outstanding person such as me”

“But, this will be an insubordination sir!”

“Insubordination? No, not really. Once we have made great achievements with this, you won’t have to worry about them and any criticism they will throw at you. Plus, most of the Magic Corps were placed in the Second Division, except those that can handle swords like us. In other words, the only remaining Magic Regiments here are the First and Second Regiments. Isn’t this a great opportunity to make our names known?”

Murtina said so as he rushed forward with the same pace while driving magic onto the enemies, while preparing himself to lunge at the enemy with his spear before the clash began. His thoughts of surpassing Yui and the others, added the fact that the invasion is in their own territory, obviously clouded his vision.

“Anyhow, we will keep the pace as it is, until the first lunge is accomplished. Troops, advance!”

With the shout of Murtina, the First Magic Regiment didn’t change their marching speed. When the other commanders saw them, thinking that their achievements would be stolen, followed suit and increased their speed instead, charging through the enemy like wildfire.

At the headquarters of the Imperial Army, a voice filled with confusion came up to the unexpected rush of the Royal Army’s First Division.

“General Linen, do you know what are they planning? At this case, the enemy vanguard will reach us faster than their other troops”

“Maybe they have noticed our magic spell?”

Upon hearing the report and questions of Royce’s staff, General Linen, the military commander of the Empire confronting the Claris Kingdom’s troops then looked in to Royce.

“Although we can’t deny the possibility of information leak, that doesn’t match the enemy’s battle formations, so the possibility of that happening is unlikely”

Royce said, confident that that their strategy has low probability of leaking to the Royal Army. As a person who knew about the countermeasures of the enemy, he was very sure that they won’t do something like this if they were aware of their plan.

“I see. Then, at the time the enemy’s front line approached, lower our center and take up the crane wing formation. When the enemy’s charging speed declines, cast the magic spell as usual. Understand?”

“Understood sir. It will be arranged immediately”

Royce saluted to Linen then issued instructions to the messenger immediately.

“Now then, Royal Army, let’s have a good time, shall we?”
