Walking along the corridors on the top most floor of the grand estate, Laurice felt oddly restless following beside her mother. The silence surrounding the place was uncanny and there was no one else around beside the two of them but she felt unusually disturbed as if she was being watched from behind. Just that thought alone was somehow giving her an ugly impression towards the old residence. She can't live here that's a given but there's something really bothering her even more so at the moment. Laurice could not help but frown. There was a visible knot in her forehead while thinking what made her mother leave her for all of these. And was it even worth it.

The old residence doesn't seem like a warm place to begin with. It rather possess an air so stiff and muted, Laurice felt like she was being short of breath just by being around. But looking around some more, Laurice was undoubtedly half-spook and half-mesmerized. The aesthetics of the estate had a strong spanish influence which was totally unexpected and from her own preference, may be a bit over the top. The entire estate was adorned with a Spanish theme alright, from the terracotta walkways, earthy furniture and fixtures tones and wall art pieces. The rest of the other design simply has that rustic and contemporary feel that appeals to her to some degree but it was just too elaborate for her taste.

Laurice blinked in contemplation.

This was most likely her own mother's birthplace.

And the same place she chose as refuge for the past couple of years after residing in the states. It was so huge, grand and luxurious in every aspect. Such a sight and wealth to behold. Was this what her mother desires all these time? Well, who would not want the prestige that comes along from being part of their clan anyway? There's just too many to mention. Laurice smiled bitterly to herself thinking she desire something different.

...

They kept on walking for what felt like an eternity when something caught Laurice's attention so suddenly. Her eyes darted to one corner dwelling on one specific portrait along the hall they were threading. It seems to be that of her mother's back when she was still a little child. Laurice's gaze furrowed deeply thinking she doesn't resemble her at all when she was around that age herself. She was rather a spitting image of her own father instead. But beautiful just the same. She was also a bright and cheerful girl then. Cheeky but obedient nonethess.

Laurice felt a tugged in her chest reminiscing.

Stop.

She halted in her thoughts. Laurice prefer not to dwell down memory lane again or it would be too troublesome.

They went past the portrait without her mother noticing anything unusual at all but Laurice could not help but be disappointed. She smiled wryly to herself while staring at her mother's back.

Ah. So typical of her.

Her mother can be that unfeeling and absolutely clueless around her. She doesn't seemed to have changed so much afterall, Laurice thought.

...

Laurice laungidly walked alongside her mother, but keeping the distance she felt was necessary. She did not want to stand close to her so she kept her pace. It was only until her mother took a sudden stop that she didn't realize they we're only a few inches apart. Her mother was now that close. Laurice tensed up a little bit. She couldn't quite comprehend what she was feeling in general. Was she mad? Annoyed? Sad? It was all mixed up already.

While turning the knob to open a door, her mother spoke in a formal tone. "This is your room. Take a rest and meet me in an hour at the balcony." She said without looking at her.

Laurice did notice there was indeed a balcony at the same floor they were currently at. But she's exhausted and did not want to have anymore pointless talks with anyone. Especially not with her mother.

"What's there to talk about?" Laurice coldly replied thinking she had enough this evening.

Her mother did not bat an eye on her response as if she was expecting such reception already.

...

Fine.

If her daughter wishes to call it a night then so be it.

What she was about to say might fill up her plate to a brim. Afraid to scare away her daughter, Camilla relented. Tomorrow is a another day. She'll give it a few more time for her daughter to adapt. If she wasn't relieved with the fact that Laurice obediently stayed, then she wouldn't be this patient. But she wasn't totally at ease.

Camilla sighed in resignation.

"Alright, you take your rest then. I'll be next door." She said before taking her leave but right before Camilla shut her room door close, she reminded Laurice to keep her cool.

"Remember what i told you before, Liz. Becareful with your words."

...

Laurice was left astounded, standing rooted to the ground.

Liz?

Why call her affectionately with that cold and distant tone? Weren't she even ashamed?

Laurice snickered.

Her mother seems to have lost her sense of propriety. Calling her familiarly, she do not acknowledge it.

That warning was also somehow ticking her off.

Was she not careful enough?

She barely even spoke today.

Laurice thought she had enough lectures for days.

But she understood where her mother was coming from. She knew the situation herself very well. And it was very disappointing.

Her phone suddenly vibrated from an incoming message.

Laurice brightened a bit in anticipation but her face fell the instant she read the text.

The message read: "Your room might be bugged. Be more attentive. Don't say anything inappropriate. Others might use it against you."

Damn right.

It was her mother again.

She's getting sick of this treatment. Honestly, Laurice felt really sick in the stomach thinking that might indeed be true. She was not allowed to speak? Then she will shut up alright.

What evil deeds. Who would go that far to investigate on someone. Someone like her. Was she that suspicious?

Laurice wanted to laugh and cry at this point.

This is plain absurd.

Everything that's she's going through right now was way too absurd. It is ridiculous and unbelievable.

Did those people think she was that easy to deal with it? Well they better think again.

A glint flashed past Laurice's eyes as she entered the room with a heavy heart.
