Ch.36 – Baptism by RNGesus

After defeating the Steel Slime on the 5th floor, we were able to safely descend further and we are now at the 10th floor.

Though it was yet more slimes thru the 6th to 9th floors, there have been no tough battles comparable to the level of the Steel Slime’s difficulty.

There were those Bomber Slimes in the 9th floor which exploded when they attacked which was a decently nasty surprise but…

[What the heck is this…]

[Looks like there are some directional arrows on it.]

And now onto the 10th floor. We braced ourselves for any other weird surprises, but the only thing in here was a stone pedestal in the middle of the room instead. On it was something that looked like a Roulette.

It’s the kind with a pointer in the middle that spins around. And on the pedestal that the pointer was set-up on were directional arrows pointing in the 4 typical directions of up, down, left and right.

[So am I supposed to push this?]

[That’s what it looks like. It doesn’t look like there’s anywhere else we can go from here.]

On the pedestal, there was a Red Button that gave off “Push me!!” vibes.

And there were no other paths besides the one that we came here from. There doesn’t seem to be any other visible paths we can take, so this is literally a dead end.

It was a square room, if you looked hard enough there were pale lines leading out from the middle of the room towards each of the 3 other walls besides the entrance we came in from.

So, is this the sort of mechanism where I spin the pointer and whichever arrow it stops on then opens the wall the arrow points at? That’s mighty bothersome.

[Imma be pushing it then. It’d be scary if something unexpected happens so you girls stay sharp ‘kay?]

[Roger that.]

[Mmm, you can leave it to me.]

Honestly I don’t really want to push the button, but it’s the only way to proceed so I reluctantly do so.

I have the girls be on alert for any unexpected events and I push the button.

The roulette spins, and stops on the Right Arrow.

The moment the pointer stopped on the arrow, sounds of the stone wall to our right shifting could be heard; a path leading down then appeared from where the wall opened up.

[That’s some amazing technology they got here…]

[As expected of a labyrinth.]

Don’t just end the topic with a “As expected of a labyrinth”! … Honestly what the hell is up with this place.

Anyway, the path to proceed has appeared so we moved onwards.

Of course we remained cautious before we even entered the path. There has been quite the number of unexpected things happening ever since we came to this Labyrinth.

Slimes dropping from the ceiling, exploding slimes causing chain explosions being afew examples.

I get the feeling that I haven’t had any good happenings in here.

[This again!?]

[I wonder if our luck is being tested here. I wonder if we can really leave that to Onii-san.]

[Okura-dono… Please do your best.]

We thoroughly check for any signs of the enemy as we continued on the path, but all we did was arrive at another room with that same roulette on a stone pedestal.

Seriously, why do I have to play the RNG game in this kind of place…

The girls beside me look at me with *very* uneasy eyes.

Kuh, so for some reason I’m the one who’s designated to push the button, but they still give me anxious looks which feels bad.

I spin the roulette again, it stopped at the Arrow pointing up(forward) this time.

The path opens up in the middle of the wall the same way as earlier.

[Mu, there are enemies.]

[They are the same type of slime that we have encountered from one of the upper floors.]

We entered the next room while staying vigilant, in there were 3 Stun Slimes which we fought on the 3rd floor. Besides them there’s also the pedestal with the roulette as per the previous rooms.

So there are rooms with enemies inside too huh. It was the right choice to have stayed cautious.

We defeat the slimes, and I spin the roulette again.

This time it stopped on the Arrow pointing to the left so the left path opens up.

[Oh, it’s a treasure chest! … So why is there a treasure chest here.]

[Fufu, you’ll lose out if you think too much about it.]

There’s a treasure chest in the room this time, in it was a necklace that has a really shiny gemstone on it.

Ooh, seeing this sort of treasure mighty tickles my adventurer’s pickle. But how does something like this appear here…

It’s hard to imagine some bloke blatantly placing a treasure chest here, I’m really wondering how this place works.

And like what Estel said, I’m also starting to feel thinking about such things is pointless as we are inside the Labyrinth.

[Hmm, is this a dead end?]

[That’s what it looks like.]

[Is there something written there?]

So i spun the roulette again and we advanced to the next room, but the new room that we arrived at had no roulette in it.

Carved on the wall were 2 swords, 1 shield, and 2 staves. What do these mean?

[Uoh!? Wha- what the!]

[Okura-dono, Estel! Get into combat formation!]

We were going to backtrack as it doesn’t seem like there’s anything in the room, but the entrance closed up before we could leave so we are now stuck in this room.

Additionally the glowing properties of the ground began to intensify, a sign that something is about to happen.

Crap… Was this room a trap ! ?

The three of us kept our weapons drawn and our backs to each other so we had complete view of our surroundings, that way we can react to whatever happens.

And when the intensity of the glowing reached its peak, the scenery around us changed before our very eyes.

[Wha-…. This, isn’t this the entrance to this floor?]

[It seems we have been sent back here.]

[So this means we get teleported back when we go the wrong way.]

Here I was getting so tensed up staying alert in case shit happens, only to get sent back to the entrance; what a way to kill the mood.

I thought that we would be encountering strong enemies left and right with this being the 10th floor and all, but if this gimmick is all there is here then clearing it will be a piece of cake.

For now I’ll just go around spinning the roulettes and reach the entrance of the next level.

=====

[I’ve had enough of this… Labyrinth why do you do this to me!?]

[Uuu…. how many times have we been doing this.]

[This would be the 40th time.]

39 attempts later, after the first try. We are back at the entrance yet again.

It’s not like there’s some fixed enemy here, the only thing we could do was spin the Roulette over and over. I was pretty optimistic at first, but as the number of attempts increased it was starting to become a pain.

I don’t think I have ever experienced this much agony before. I’d so like to punch the guy in the face who thought this was going to be a piece of cake!

I then tried pushing the button in the first room a second time, but it was fixed in the pushed down state so that didn’t work.

[Estel, can’t you just bust the walls?]

[Ara, what’s with the dangerous plan Onii-san. That would be an inelegant act in a Labyrinth.]

I’m getting tired of trying to clear this the normal way, so I proposed for Estel to destroy the walls.

But like what she said, destroying the walls to advance through a maze doesn’t sound very manly.

Then again if I’m starting to think this way then the fault would lie with the person who created this Labyrinth, not me.

[We can’t continue if this goes on…. Please!]

[Sigh, you always make it sound so convincing.]

She did a troubled expression by putting her hand on her cheek, but she relented to my request.

She then takes out a Grimoire from her bag, then creates Fireballs which she sends hurling towards the wall.

Noru and I raised our shields to guard against any possible flying debris.

The magic attack lands on the wall with a mighty explosion and spreads some burning flames. The wall should be destroyed, it was a pretty powerful explosion.

After the smoke cleared it become apparent that the explosion――did not destroy the wall.

The same glowing wall stood before us as though nothing happened. There was no damage whatsoever.

[Not even a scratch… That’s somewhat frustrating in its own way.]

[Such toughness, it must have been constructed to be able to withstand this level of destruction from the start.]

So even someone trying to destroy the walls was expected….

[Muu, guess there’s no way other than to do how this was intended.]

This is going to be fun…

It wouldn’t feel like such a drag if you could choose where you wanted to advance towards, but where you go to is randomized here.

[Alright, we’re going back the next time we get warped back.]

[We are going back already?]

[Yea, we have been going at this for quite awhile now.]

[We sure did.]

Several hours should have passed since we first entered the Labyrinth. Though ! had actually prepared enough to last us for several days of exploring, it would be pretty stupid if all we did was keep getting the wrong path on this floor.

We have already reached our target of getting to the 10th floor, so I have no qualms about calling it a day for Labyrinth exploration.

Thus the final round of the 10th floor roulette begins.

The first roll went left, the following went right, we advanced while booping some slimes along the way.

I had every intention to give up when we failed this time, but after rolling the roulette a good number of times later we actually reached a room we’ve never been to before.

[Ooh, we actually managed to get to the final room apparently.]

[That’s a nasty looking door.]

[This is the kinda thing where there’s a Boss nearby.]

A large set of metallic Doors greeted us, at the final room we arrived in.

It felt intimidating to even look at.

Certainly such doors are precursors to Boss battles, and this is the 10th floor. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Mid-Boss tier monster beyond the doors.

I was a little hesitant to open the doors, but I pushed it open slightly and took a peek.

If this was a game you’d be sucked into the room and into a mandatory Boss Fight the moment you interact with the doors, so being able to do something like this is quite the blessing.

Peeking through the gap in the doors, I catch a glimpse of a Golden colored Slime. It’s about as big as the Cyclops in terms of size.

They usually look more majestic when they get so such sizes. A-anyway Imma have a look at its Status.

=====

Ah… This one looks impossible.

[Noru, Estel… Time to head back.]

[What’s the matter?]

[We’ve already gotten this far too, what happened Onii-san?]

I close the door, turned toward the girls and told them my intentions.

They were fairly surprised after hearing what I said.

[Here, have a look at this.]

[Aah…. Yea let’s head back.]

[We might have reached this point a little to early.]

After I showed them the Status on my smartphone, both of them had the same reaction as me.

The ability and skill were unknown variables to us currently, so there’s no need to force ourselves to fight it right now.

As expected we need to gain more levels and get better stats. I might also need to roll the Gacha even more than what I already have planned.
