Ch.38 – Reprieve

[Haa~, I somehow feel awfully tired.]

[What’s the matter? You are sounding more like a wuss than you usually do.]

[Does that mean we are not going to hunt for manastones?]

It has been more than a week after our Labyrinth review. We have since restarted our hunting at the Northern Cave, to get more manastones and raise our levels.

And right now, it is another new morning at the inn and I am contemplating what to do for the day.

Fatigue has been piling up in me, I don’t feel like getting out of bed.

[Uuーmu, howsabout we take a break from gathering manastones.]

[… *gasp*]

After I said that, both of the girls were so surprised that neither of them could hide their reactions.

What? Did I really say something that weird?

[Okura-dono, are you feeling alright? Do you feel unwell anywhere?]

[He…. doesn’t have a fever. Onii-san, maybe you should drink a Panacea?]

Noru tried speaking to me while in disbelief, while Estel placed her hand on my forehead to see if I have a fever.

Oi, is it really so bad that you’d suggest I drink a Panacea!?

[I’m quite sure I’m not sick.]

[No way~ There’s no way Okura-dono would say something like that――Ouch!? Hay dat hwarts….]

She was doing a “Yare Yare” pose as she said that, she might have finished her sentence with a ”Oi oi, what kind of a joke is this”.

So I instinctively pinched and pulled her cheeks that I recently haven’t been doing much of.

[Good grief, is that what you really think of me as.]

[Ehehe, this is what the normal Okura-dono should be like.]

[Muu… Thanks anyway.]

She might have been trying to lighten the mood, I guess I might have sounded too insipid.

That little skit made me feel like I got back a tinsy bit of my usual self.

It’s bad to wallow in despair when you start thinking of what you can’t foresee, I expected as much.

Rolling the Gacha to get me the Class that I wanted… It brings back memories of my time playing GC.

The countless times I went “It’s a rainbow, but that’s not what I want!”. Then came the despair of looking at my bills from splurging my Magic(Credit) Cards.

But the feels you get from beating RNGesus and getting what you want…. Ah, thinking about all this is making me want to roll the Gacha.

[So, what are we doing today?]

[Let’s see… I guess we can go to the Guild and pick up a different kind of request to do for a change of pace. The only requests we have been doing outside of Rank promotion requests are subjugation requests after all.]

We are taking a break from our usual hunting at the Northern Cave for today, and taking on a different kind of request.

=====

[Wootー, this is quite the peaceful looking location.]

[Agreed. It’s sorta giving my body the sudden urge to laze around.]

[It might be a good thing to come to this type of place every so often.]

Where we are now, is a vast green field with a river flowing through it, it’s a panoramic place.

We accepted a C-rank herb collection request when we went to the Adventurers’ Guild earlier, and so here we are now.

A forest sits in the vicinity, and that is where the request item Shisuki Grass grows.

It seems that wolf type monsters roam in that forest, but they shouldn’t pose much of a problem for us.

Shisuki Grass have the appearance of a plant with white pearl like objects stuck on it. I had a look at a sketch of it earlier, but I wonder if such a plant really exists.

It mainly grows in the forest, but some grow out in this field as well. The amount we need to collect is 20.

[Hーmm, there’s a decent amount of ground to cover. Wouldn’t it take too much time if we started searching from here?]

[Ah, I found one already!]

It’s a large field, and it wouldn’t be easy to spot if we went searching in the forest.

It really throws me off when Noru finds it so quickly right when I was thinking that.

[… Maybe it’s surprisingly easy to find.]

[Or maybe she was lucky?]

Noru joyfully collects the Shisuki Grass.

This shouldn’t take too long to complete at our current pace. We can have some rest and roll in the grass here if we finish quickly.

It’s a very comfortable place, nice and sunny. This is a great place for a breath of fresh air.

[…Yeah, so she really was just lucky.]

[I cannot find any others at all…]

After thinking about all that stuff and searching 10 minutes later. We were unable to find any more of the request item other than the first one we found earlier.

Only our start is good, it’s always like this!

I feel like I’m getting harassed every time, as “getting dropped down after we climb up” happens really often.

[Mnnー, we need to go into the forest after all.]

[We went to the trouble of accepting this Herb collection request to take it easy, but it ends up like this anyway.]

I thought we would be able to finish this without any monster encounters, but it seems like there’s no other way but to enter the forest.

It would be nice if it was just 1 or 2 monster battles, but I bet a whole bunch of monsters are going to show up on the map once we enter inside.

With that in mind we approached to enter the forest, but we discover a curled up white little creature a short distance before the entrance.

[Nn? What’s that?]

[Ah, that’s…!?]

[Noru you know what it is?]

Noru was surprised when she saw this creature, and reacted louder than usual.

I have always thought that she is expectedly knowledgeable. Maybe I can get her to teach me something next time.

[That’s a Fortune Rabbit! It is said to bring happiness to those who see it, it is a very appreciated animal!]

[Ara, it’s cute.]

Her expression of excitement by shaking her hands up and down, seem more intense than usual today.

She looks very excited. It’s supposed to bring happiness so I guess it’s rare.

Estel also said it’s cute after she saw it.

After a closer look, those red eyes and long ears, plus that round tail… It’s 100% a rabbit like the name implies. Though there is a pale heart shaped pattern on its body.

…… I wonder if regular animals are normally found in places like this. Isn’t this a monster?

However that doesn’t seem to be the case judging from the girls reactions.

[Aah~… I already feel satisfied just having seen it.]

[That much huh…Nn? Isn’t it behaving strangely somehow?]

She was letting out sounds like “Hau~”. I thought it’s cute too so that can’t be helped.

As I looked at the rabbit which was shying away from us before our eyes, I can’t help but notice something was strange.

It appears to be frightened and is trembling as it looks at us. However it shows no sign of trying to run away.

When I approached it and closed the distance, it trembled more than before and attempted to run only to collapse almost immediately after trying.

[Ahh… It seems to be injured…]

[Yeah, that looks like a deep wound. I wonder if this works on it?]

Noru slowly moved toward it so as not to aggravate it further, she squats down beside it and tells us of the wound she sees on its leg.

I move in and have a closer look as well, there was a deep puncture wound and a considerable amount of bleeding, perhaps it was attacked by another monster. I was surprised it was able to escape in that condition.

She looks at the rabbit while being all fidgety.

It can’t be helped, so I whip out a Potion to heal the wound with.

I don’t know if the potion is effective on non-humans or not though.

Noru receives the potion and pours out the liquid inside onto her hand. She then moves her hand close to the rabbit’s mouth, the rabbit then starts lapping up the liquid with its tongue.

When it finished licking up a certain amount of the potion, the area where the wound was began glowing and the wound disappears soon after.

Hoo, I haven’t gotten any flesh wounds up until now, I didn’t know drinking Potions also closes such wounds.

[Kudos to the Gacha Potion.]

[It really does heal instantly.]

[Haa~h. I’m so glad. Hey, do be careful on your way back.]

Noru gives the now fully recovered rabbit a pat, she then stands and moves away from it.

From which the rabbit gets up as well, and trots along behind her.

[Huh? What’s the matter?]

[Looks like it likes you.]

When it catches up to Noru’s feet, it looks up at her with moistened pupils filled with joy.

[Nnnー… Okura-dono?]

[Nope.]

She calls out to me like she wants to say something, she probably wants to bring it back with us.

But that won’t work out, there’s no place for us to keep it in the first place. It’s not like we can bring it into the inn with us.

[Pweeese, pwetty pweeeeese…]

[More like, isn’t that actually a monster?]

[It’s a Fortune Rabbit.]

[Oh…]

But Noru doesn’t give up!

She insists that it’s a rabbit, no matter what questions I throw at her. Not that I actually mind as it doesn’t look harmful.

It then became a long battle of words, but I gave in eventually.

By the time we finished collecting our herbs, the evening sun has already begun illuminating the area. Where did my change of pace go.

By the way I asked around about it later, apparently this rabbit is a monster that can be kept as a pet.

It is an intelligent monster, and once it likes you it will become super emotionally attached.

Guess I’ll need to start looking for an inn which accepts pets…
