Three Years Ago

The moment they reached Mushmis Island, a small island which her mom purchased for her research on cyanobacteria or blue - green algae, Hailey's crew hurriedly lifted up Dr. Jim into one of the rooms of her rest house beside the research lab.

She already prepared everything he may need. An oxygen tank, cardiac monitor, hospital bed, mechanical ventilator, suction machine, intubation set, bedside commode , etc....

After attaching him to a nasal cannula for his oxygen supplementation, she hastily followed the insertion of nasogastric tube, a tube which is inserted through the nose down to the stomach. It would carry the food or medication right into the stomach in a required amount especially for patients like him who had no more appetite and now in a comatose state. She then administered the first dose of her newly - formulated Hailey's Pill with deep prayers. She was just a human who was an instrument to the healing of the sick but someone ALMIGHTY in heaven still holds the lives of everyone.

Through Hailey's Pen monitor, she looked closely at his too weak disposition, hoping that in the coming days he would wake up. His cancer cells had already widely spread into his whole system including his brain that waking up was no longer possible at the moment. It was already a miracle that he still survived at this hour, without even using his portable oxyen concentrator.

Hailey's anxiety soared up high as she monitored him everyday, waiting for any sign of response. Minutes became an hour, an hour became days and days became a week...

She cared for him personally, from feeding him to administering medications. From turning him to sides to prevent bed sores to changing his diapers. From doing mouth care to doing bedbath.

His recovery became her obsession that she always found herself sitting by his side even past midnights, holding his hand and whispering a prayer.

At other times, she hooked herself into further studies, delving deeper into possible options that she could introduce to him, just to make his deteriorating cells repair and regenerate.

One morning, while she was giving him another dose of his medication, she suddenly jumped off from her place, sending the solution splattering into his gown. His eyes were opened and he was staring at her!

Being overjoyed, she hurriedly placed the feeding tube down , hugged him and cried...

"Thanks God, you're awake, Dr.Jim!"

She waited for his next progress but there was none. Nevertheless, a blank stare was still a good sign!

Time passed by quickly but for Hailey, it was already an eternity. The progress was so slow but she did not lose hope. Most of all, she had never been this prayerful in all her life! And many times, she found herself crying while she looked into the microscope! What was happening with her?

It had been six months since she stayed by Dr.Jim's side and she decided to move on since his progress was very slow and she would also be stagnant. She should return to the forest and went ahead with her research for the perfection of cancer cure.

She asked one of her trusted research partner to come over to take charge in caring for Dr. Jim. In the morning before she left, she did him a bed bath, changed him into a new sets of diaper, fed him and all her daily routines before she sat down and talked to him.

She held his hand and run her fingers through his hair while she forced herself to talk. A lump was already forming in her throat making it hard for her to speak.

"Dr. Jim, I need to go and go on with my research. I need to do this for your recovery and for the millions of people who are also suffering like you. I need to hasten this up so that you can return to your family in two years. By that time, I am hoping I could already present to the world the perfect Hailey's Pill. "

She didn't know why. Her tears were racing down from her eyes as she talked. She was hesitant to leave. She was afraid he wouldn't be cared the way she did. She was afraid she wouldn't be there when he could finally recognize her. Perhaps because she had dedicated herself in caring for him and she became emotionally attached as a doctor to a patient.

When she released his hand and stood up, suddenly, she saw it! He slowly lifted up his hand up and reached out to hold hers.

"Don't... " His voice was hoarse.

Suddenly overjoyed, she hugged him tightly and cried.

"Dr. Jim, you're finally awake! "

"Thank you, Dr.Hailey!" He softly said.

She straightened up and stared at him to confirm if it was really him who was talking.

"Take me with you. "

Oh, dear! It was really him! He's awake! He's alive!

She threw herself at him again and hugged him, her heart overflowing with joy! Her laughter then became a sob, and while her face lingered on his neck, she felt that her shoulders became wet. He was crying as well!

"Dr. Hailey, thank you again. I have heard and seen you. "

She knew what he meant. Hearing is the last sensory faculty that would deteriorate in a dying man and it is also assumed that a comatose person can still hear. He perhaps heard her as she talked to him everyday, encouraging him to win the fight. Or, he perhaps heard her cry when at times she went desperate.

In all honesty, Dr. Jim had long been awake and had been silently observing her. He wanted to know her mystery and her sincerity in her advocacy. He saw how much she cared for him and he felt ashamed with it. For a long time, he couldn't dare to admit that he was too uncomfortable to be helpless. Most of all, because, the one who took care of him was not in any way related to him.

But now that she's leaving, he could not afford to be left behind. He may be reluctant to admit, but he couldn't imagine himself to be in someone else's care.
