Mr. Phyllis Wayne stood up when he saw the couple coming towards him. He extended his hand, first to the woman probably in her early fifties, then to the man following her, perhaps in his sixties.

"Mr. & Mrs. John Ybañez? "He smiled as he shook hands with them.

"Mr. Wayne! " The couple responded almost simultaneously.

They met at Graham's Cafe and Restaurant inside a five star hotel in Warner Robins. One of its glass walls was facing the hotel's garden, giving the restaurant a magnificent ambiance. There were two entrance, one from the hotel's lobby and the second was from the garden. Mr. Wayne chose a table at the corner near the garden entrance.

It was still ten in the morning so the whole place was still absolutely quiet. Mr. Wayne arrived ahead of the couple since he was staying in the same hotel for his two - day stay before he would fly to another country for another business meeting.

"Please, have a seat. "Mr. Wayne made a gesture to the two who remained standing across him. He could tell that they were just of the same age level.

"Madamme and Mr. Ybañez, I would be so honored to know what is it that made you decide to fly over here to see me."

"Mr. Wayne, we also feel honored to have your time over this somewhat 'trivial matter'. I said 'trivial'because our objective is mainly based upon the childish desire of our daughter.

However 'trivial' or 'childish' this may seem to you, we hope that you may understand that as parents, we always value the desires of our children. Most especially, if that desire would matter for a lifetime."

Mr. Phyllis Wayne held his gaze intently and patienly at her. He was becoming more curious, most especially, when she mentioned about the great value she was giving her daughter.

Mr. Wayne suddenly felt guilty. How long had it been since he last called his children? How long had it been since they had a dinner together? When was the last special occasion they were gathered together as a family? Who among his two children he last celebrated a birthday with?

He could not even remember. But these two spent a great amount to see him just because of a daughter's desire?

"Go ahead, Mrs. Ybañez, I am listening."

"Mr. Wayne, before I would tell you what is it that my daughter wishes, allow us first to discuss about something we could offer in

return. " Madamme Ybañez then turned to her husband and beckoned him to continue their presentation.

"Mr. Wayne, as you may have known, we are the sole owners of Gracienne Diagnostics as well as the other one, Gracienne Medical Supplies and Equipments."

Mr. Wayne nodded. "Catherine Fields Medical Center is one of your clients."

"We are so happy about that Mr. Wayne," he paused and bowed slightly, acknowledging his patronage.

"However, oblivious to everyone in the business world, we are currently funding a multi -million dollar research on cancer treatment and prevention. After those several bloody years of focusing into this research, our group of scientists are now holding bright rays of hope for a 90% success rate. We have also this invention called, 'Hailey's Pen ', a cancer mapping apparatus that would guarantee a 100% success of surgical interventions for cancer stages 1 to 3."

Mr. Wayne still did not get it. He furrowed his eyes as he gestured again for him to go ahead.

This time, Mrs.Ybañez opened up her mouth as her husband placed a hand over hers, urging her to continue.

"Mr. Wayne, as my next subject would now be a sensitive one, my husband pass this over to me," she paused as she gave Mr. Ybañez a quick glance and a smile.

"Our only daughter, Gracienne Ybañez, has long been head -over - heels in love with a man who, until now, does not care even a little about her." Madamme Ybañez revealed sadly.

It was indeed a pain on her part as a mother seeing her daughter like this, failing and hurting in love.

"She met him during her training for Internal Medicine. When she learned

that he would be training for his Fellowship in Cardiology here, she also followed. Yet, nothing she did could make him set his eyes on

her. "

"Do you mean she's in love with my son? " Mr.Wayne had now slowly digested.

"Exactly, Mr.Wayne." Madamme Ybañez confirmed straightforwardly.

Mr. Wayne's thoughts were racing. He recalled her first statements down to the last.

".....allow us first to discuss what we could offer in return.." , "research on cancer treatment and prevention..,

"Hailey's Pen...,"in love with a man.."

"Mr. Wayne, let me plainly state it to you." Mrs. Ybañez broke the silence to fill in the blanks in Mr. Wayne's mind.

"If you may try to persuade your son to consider the feelings of my daughter, we will then be choosing Catherine Fields as the launching institution of our research."

"As we may predict it, Mr. Wayne, the breakthrough would make enormous

fame and huge income as well to your group of hospitals."

"We may say that there would be unexpected setbacks, but we can't stop the fame." Mr. Ybañez concluded their proposal.

Mr. Wayne was dumbfounded. It may sound trivial and ridiculous that this proposal was mainly based on their daughter's love for his son but he could not deny the great advantages he could get from it.

"Mr. Wayne, we would, as well, ask you a favor to keep this between the three of us while your son is still undecided. We don't want to add another injury to our daughter's existing frustrations."

Mr. Wayne could not help himself from admiring this pair. He may be attracted to the proposal but he was more affected emotionally by the value they give to their daughter. It was clearly not enough for them to give her their wealth and education, they also cared about her feelings.

Another fact that touched him was the very rare open communication between them and their child. He just could not believe that they were not only their child's parents but her bestfriends and confidante as well!

What about him?
