"Anthon.. " As Jim mentioned his name, he was instantly reverted to his senses.

"Yes, doc! " He stared back at him, trying to establish himself as a dignified man worthy to fight equally with him. Sadly, the fight was for a woman...

Jim replied him with a gentle laugh.

"Please call me, Jim. No need of formalities. After all, we are all knitted together by one person." Jim said as he looked down on Jia whom he pulled closely by his shoulder.

Jia sat up straight, sensing a danger coming on. Something, she was just clueless of.

"Jim.. "Anthon repeated his name, devoid of expression in his face.

"Back then," Jim began, his face shifted into a serious aura, "Jia, unexpectedly came into my life."

Jia stiffened. Her heart suddenly beat erratically.

"She was pregnant and was running away from the man who was about to be married to someone else."

Giselle's eyes suddenly turned sharp. Anthon just listened, his eyes were far away.

"I could not understand why she had to run away when, as she said, you asked her to marry you. But then, it was all because of the life inside Giselle's womb. She could have fought for her own child that also needed a father, but because she could not bear it in her conscience to know that another child would suffer, she chose to take the burden herself."

"I watched her go through sleepless nights and I watched her struggling out of loneliness and pain. She pretended to be strong in front of me. But as a physician myself, I knew her emotional needs of someone to comfort her in that uneasy stages of pregnancy. And that should be from someone she loved."

As the onion-skinned Giselle heard this, her tears started to fall like a torrent.

"Knowing the kind of heart she had just by the way she chose to set you free, it opened my heart to her and it made me instantly love her then." Jim smiled but there was pain in his eyes.

Jia sat like a statue pinned on her seat. This was just insane! How could he brought this up? What was his point?

"She thought that all I did was pure kindness, and she returned it to me in even better ways. Little did she know that in the process, I had been breaking. I was not blind. I was neither dumb. I knew very well that no matter how much I cared for her, in her heart, there was only you. "

"I patiently waited. I believed time has its own ways of healing and forgetting. Until Jian was born and I gave him my name."

At the mention of Jian's name, tears glistened in Anthon's eyes.

"To honor you as the father and the man that Jia loved, I named him Jian, " he paused and laughed," that's the combination of the first syllables of your names. But I gave him my family name. "

"I was trembling in fear when Jia was on her dreadful hours of labor, but I was the happiest the moment I saw his head coming out! He was my son, I have waited and cared for him in those whole nine months!"

"We lived together then as a family. They colored my lonely life. Yes, I was born with a silver spoon, but my family tree were mere letters in a white paper. I hardly knew and feel them at all."

"There's only one in my heart as a family, and that is kuya Nap."

"Then, I knew what happened to your marriage so I decided that Jian should know you. How could I deny his right to you as a father and your own right to your son? I don't want to be selfish."

"It was not all our fault.. it was simply fate's. "

"Then, I thought, my waiting had been long enough. I wanted to take them legally as my own. But I could not force something that she did not want."

Jia could not hold it anymore and she cried. She clung into Jim's arms and said, "please, stop."

Jim indeed stopped for a moment and stroke her hair. But he went on.

"I let her go home to face you and tell you about the whole truth. The pain and fear of losing her was almost killing me. But I had to let go. If she had chosen to stay with you, no matter how it would hurt, I would still let her go. But she returned to me..."

"And so our marriage was decided. Until the ceremony would be finally officiated and our marriage pronounced, she is still free. I want her to make a decision that she would not regret in her whole lifetime. Because, by then, I will be fierce in fighting with anyone who would dare to take her away from me."

Giselle and Jia was stunned. How could he do this to himself? Giselle now understood why Jia was so stubborn in choosing Jim. This man was not a human after all!

Anthon, on the other hand, was like an empty piece of block. He sat still, his eyes were still faraway, but tears were now falling from his eyes.

" I choose you as my business partner because this business is for Jia and Jian . Whatever may happen to me, at least, I have prepared ahead for their future. I chose you because I know you would not turn them down."

"My family owns a business empire. And you know, great troubles lies within. As long as I am around, nothing could harm them, but we cannot predict what will happen to us in the next hour, in the coming days.. That's why I decided to invest in separate business ventures that no one would dare to take it away from them. And that's exactly why it is registered in their names."

There was silence after that except for the soft, stiffled sobs from Giselle.

Jia was horrified. Anthon was dumbstruck.

Until Jim, spoke again. He stood up and extend a hand to Anthon.

"Anthon, may the best man win... "
