It was a warm Sunday afternoon with the sun shining brightly in the sky. The trees in the small lawn had birds sitting on its branches as they chirped their own tune, maybe expressing their joy for the warmth that the sun had generously bestowed on them after a long period of time.

Xiao Li was running haywire on the grass barefoot, with a small stuffed doll in one hand and a handful of birdseed in the other, every one or two of which would seep out of her small stubby hand that left her with a very few right now.

Her two ponytails dangled back and forth with every step her little feet took. She had no care of her feet getting soiled or her dress getting crumpled as she continued running after the birds that flew down every now and then with the hope to feed and befriend at least one of those.

"Wear your shoes first Xiao Li, your feet are getting dirty." Came the gentle voice of Gen from the entrance to the garden as he walked to her with a pair of small pink shoes in his hand.

"Bird wait!" Xiao Li ran after a small pigeon ignoring Gen's words to catch it and feed grains that she had brought from inside the house to feed the birds.

Seeing his words getting ignored, Gen walked over to the little girl and held her by her arm to stop her from running. Only now did Xiao Li realize his presence and turned to look at him. "How many times have I told you to not go running around without wearing your shoes? You might catch a cold like this."

"Bird..." Xiao Li spoke in a remorseful voice as she saw the pigeon flying away to sit on a high branch of a nearby tree. Her big round eyes had started to fill with tears as she was unable to catch even a single bird to feed the seeds to.

"What are you doing?" Gen asked confused as he squatted down and placed her shoes on the ground to make her wear them.

"Bird..." was all Xiao Li spoke as she placed her hands on Gen's shoulder and lifted one foot to slide it in her shoe while her eyes were still glued on the birds sitting on the branches of the tress that she wanted to feed.

"What do you want to do with them Xiao Li?" Gen asked tenderly as he secured the belt of her shoe around her ankle.

"Feed them." She answered in a meek voice as she extended her hand in the front and opened her fist to show him the birdseed in her hand.

Gen saw her hand and then her face, that had fallen from the sadness. After half the day passed, he finally realized what the little girl was exactly trying to do. She was trying to feed the birds but every time she went near them, they would run away.

Seeing her efforts and her innocence, he burst into a peal of laughter which made the little girl even more confused and her lips parted to finally cry loudly as his laughter just added more to her remorse and her tears threatened to fall out of her eyes any minute now.

"My sweet girl!" he chuckled before standing back to his feet and taking her wrist in his hand as he led her to a trail made with stone in the middle of the small garden. "This is not how you feed the birds Xiao Li."

Xiao Li lifted her head to look at the man who was too tall for her small frame. "Scatter the seeds here and then see how fast not only that one pigeon but the entire flock of birds will fly down here to feed on it."

She saw the small smile on his face and feeling convinced, flicked her arm to empty her fist and scattered all the bird seeds on the ground in one quick movement and walked a few steps away with Gen. It took a few minutes before the birds sitting on the trees nearby started to fly down and pick the seeds one by one, which made Xiao Li ecstatic beyond words and her happiness reflected in the bright smile on her face.

"See that is how you feed the birds. If you go near them, they get scared." He made her understand everything with a lot of patience.

As they watched the birds feed on the grains, Jin Qingling who was at home arranging their belongings as they had moved recently, stepped outside with a manila envelope in her hand. "Gen I have unpacked your belongings. Do you want to come and take a look?"

Gen's back stiffened when he heard her words and he immediately turned around to see her holding something which was exactly what he didn't want her to see. Leaving Xiao Li alone on the lawn, he paced back to the entrance and gingerly took the envelope from her hands. "You can just leave my things as it is, for now, I will unpack it later. I want them in a certain order, so I'll do it myself." He tried hard to make his voice sound as normal as he could, to not raise her suspicion.

Not sensing anything amiss, Jin Qingling nodded her head and after taking a look at Xiao Li to make sure she was fine, she headed back inside. Only after she did, Gen heaved a sigh of relief as he ran his fingers through his short inky black hair, which has become ruffled due to the wind.

After a few minutes passed, Gen also went inside the house and straight to his study, locking the door behind him. When he made sure that no one was around, he emptied the envelope on the table and several pictures and pages that contained details of Jin Qingling's whereabouts when he was looking for an opportunity to approach her, slid out on the table.

He tenderly looked at her pictures which were of the time when she had not left C City. Few of them were also of her at the office, where they both worked and he had clicked her secretly. Looking at them his gaze was full of affection and love that was rooted deep. Deep enough to love her secretly for more than two years, and gradually without him realizing when his love turned into an obsession for her where he was even willing to hurt the only person he loved so much to make her his.

He then picked up a neatly folded paper that looked old and unfolded it. The words that he had written to express his love for Jin Qingling four years back had now faded with the passage of time and its condition was so delicate that even a slight pull would have torn the page from the fold. It reminded him of the time when he had finally decided to confess his love to her, to only find out that she was in love with her sister's boss and it had broken his heart and that heartbreak had led him to do everything he should not have done.

After his gaze ran across the letter he murmured to himself, "I am sorry Lingling that I plotted so much behind your back with your sister, but it was all because I really love you. I was forced to send those goons after you because I did not want you to go back to Wu Zihao. I am sorry I was selfish but I do and I promise to forever love you more than that undeserving Wu Zihao and always keep you happy." Even though his words were apologetic his tone and demeanor didn't seem to be the slightest bit apologetic.

One by one he looked at everything for the last time before he placed them back into the envelope. "I don't need these anymore to woo you. You are all mine now." With a triumphant smile on his face,  he then pulled out a lighter from his trousers and placed the lit end at the edge of the envelope to let it slowly catch the fire.

He looked at the burning envelope with a complicated look until the flames started reaching his hand, and only then did he throw it in the trash bin nearby to let it burn to ashes— destroying every proof of his actions in the past.
