Chapter 60: Backrub

Ji Yuxian wore a jade belt around his waist. The jade buttons were designed quite delicately. Su Jiu had never unfastened buttons like that before, and so she struggled for quite some time.

They stood very close to each other, face to face. Su Jiu concentrated on the jade belt with a lowered head. Every now and then, her slender, pale fingers would brush up against his waist and tickle him.

Ji Yuxian looked down at Su Jiu, whose wrinkled brow seemed to suggest that she was facing a great enemy. Ji Yuxian raised an eyebrow. He leaned forward to get closer to her, close enough to smell the fragrance coming from her.

What fragrance is this? Ji Yuxian thought to himself. It was light and sweet, unlike any fragrance he had smelled before.

Su Jiu wasn’t thinking these charming thoughts. A thin layer of anxious sweat crept onto her forehead, but the belt remained stuck as if it and Ji Yuxian were one.

Su Jiu lost her patience and pulled at the belt forcefully.

The jade belt broke into two halves and clattered noisily onto the ground.

There was a moment of silence. Su Jiu, acting as if nothing had happened, continued undressing Ji Yuxian. She casually asked, “Was that jade belt valuable?”

“Yes. Hetian white jade. The belt was crafted by an imperial artisan. It took two months to carve, and cost around three thousand taels of silver.” Ji Yuxian spoke calmly.

Su Jiu felt her breath stop. She continued acting as if nothing happened, and asked, “Should I pay for it?”

The outer robe was removed. Ji Yuxian, wearing only undergarments, turned and slowly walked towards the bathtub behind the room divider. He spoke as he walked. “My wife, you receive a monthly allowance of thirty taels of silver, which adds to three-hundred and sixty taels per year. From this day forward, you will not receive the next ten years of allowance.”

Ji Yuxian’s elegant shadow disappeared behind the room divider. Su Jiu tightened her grip around his robe, gritted her teeth, and then suddenly threw the robe to the side.

What?

So being Young Mistress of the Ji family meant that she would get a monthly allowance? But she hadn’t seen a single copper coin yet, and she already lost the allowance of ten years!

Three-thousand and six-hundred taels of silver!

Su Jiu was furious!

“Come here, rub my back!” Ji Yuxian’s voice traveled through the misty air, elegant and alluring.

Su Jiu sat on the bed angrily and glanced at the room divider. She didn’t move.

Ji Yuxian wasn’t paying her, but still wanted her to rub his back? Servants were treated better!

Did she come to Ji Manor to be a servant?

No, she came to rob the Ji family!

“Come here!” Ji Yuxian sounded as if he was in the water. His voice was a bit muddled. He spoke with comfortable laziness, as well as the typical air of superiority.

Su Jiu sat down on the ground. She silently turned her head away.

“For every rub, I’ll deduct one month’s allowance from the cost of the belt,” Ji Yuxian said with a hint of laughter in his voice.

Su Jiu immediately stood up and walked towards the room divider.

Behind the divider was a large rosewood bathtub with steam rising from the top. Ji Yuxian sat in the tub, comfortably leaning back with his head against the edge.

His black, silky hair fell past his bare shoulders. His skin was pale and as fine as jade. Under the candlelight and the steamy mist, this was an alluring sight to behold.

Su Jiu, looking at Ji Yuxian’s demonic beauty, suddenly felt her breath stop. Her face turned red.

During summer days, she had seen Chang Huan and the others bare-backed in front of her. What was different this time?

Su Jiu mocked herself internally and then walked towards Ji Yuxian. She picked up a washcloth, rolled up her sleeves, and began rubbing his back.

Perhaps she rubbed a bit too forcefully. Ji Yuxian wrinkled his brow and chuckled. “Don’t tell me you really grew up in the countryside?”

Su Jiu looked down, and with a great deal of seriousness, continued rubbing his back, perhaps hoping to rub off some grime. Ji Yuxian, however, bathed every day and liked to maintain cleanliness. There was not a speck of dust or grime on his body.

Nothing came off, but the rubbing had turned his shoulders quite red, looking as if the skin would break. Ji Yuxian finally couldn’t stand it anymore and stopped her hand. “My wife, that’s enough.”

Su Jiu nodded her head. “Stand up!”

Ji Yuxian raised an eyebrow. “To do what?”

“To rub the rest of your body! How would I do that if you’re underwater?”

“….”

Would he dare let her rub the rest of his body with so much force?

Seeing Su Jiu’s calm and serious demeanor, Ji Yuxian grew more and more curious.

The night before, she was shy and wouldn’t even let him touch her. Yet this day, she calmly stated that she wanted to rub his body. How many faces did she have, and which one of those faces was truly her?

Ji Yuxian leaned back on the wooden tub and looked up with a smile. “This is good enough. Thank you, my wife!”

Su Jiu’s sleeves were still rolled up. A strand of her hair fell loose, moistened by the steam. Her delicate features appeared especially lively and beautiful. She lifted a hand and pointed past the room divider. “Then I’m leaving!”

And with that, she put the washcloth on the wooden stand, let down her sleeves, and left.

Ji Yuxian smiled as he watched her slender silhouette disappear.

After Ji Yuxian was done bathing, the servants changed the bathwater. Su Jiu, carrying a fresh set of clothes, was going to bathe as well.

Ji Yuxian rested on the bed, casually flipping through a book. He looked up, and at that moment, saw Su Jiu’s silhouette through the translucent room divider.

Su Jiu let down her hair, and it fell to her waist. She quickly removed her outer robe, her shirt, and her skirt. Her movements showed no shyness or embarrassment, even though she knew he was in the same room.

Through the room divider, he could see her figure, her slender waist, her long legs, and the beautiful curvature of her chest. The candle suddenly flickered, and her shadow briefly moved, almost as if she was about to walk out from behind the divider.

Ji Yuxian’s throat felt dry, so he picked up a cup of tea and took a sip. When he looked up again, Su Jiu was already in the water. The silhouette was no longer clear, and all he heard was the sound of water splashing.

Ji Yuxian’s eyes glimmered. “My wife, should I come rub your back?” he said with a smile.

“Not necessary!” Su Jiu’s voice traveled through the moist air, and she seemed to mutter something to herself.

“I don’t have silver to pay you!”

Ji Yuxian chuckled, and continue reading the book at hand.

After around ten minutes, Su Jiu came out, fully clothed. She walked right to the bed, uncovered the blanket, and laid down as far to one end as possible. There was enough room for two or three people on the rest of the bed.

Ji Yuxian put down the book and sat up. He put down the bed drapes, cutting out the candlelight. It instantly became dark inside the bed drapes.

Ji Yuxian was wearing light purple sleepwear. He leaned down, and his silky hair fell beside Su Jiu’s ear. His eyes were slightly narrowed, and his lips were a vibrant red, indescribably attractive.

“I apologize for what happened last night. I’ll compensate for it tonight.”

Su Jiu looked at him cautiously. She felt that Ji Yuxian was quite dangerous at the moment, and shuffled closer to the inside of the bed. She chuckled sheepishly. “That’s not necessary. It’s just covering up with a blanket.”

Ji Yuxian leaned forward. His long fingers brushed against her moist cheeks, and slowly moved down.

“You’re shy?”

Su Jiu looked at him with a raised brow. Shy about what?

Ji Yuxian tried to pull down the blanket, but Su Jiu tightly gripped onto it.

The heat in Ji Yuxian’s eyes disappeared. He chuckled lightly. “Su Yuejiu, you can play this game once, but I don’t have very much patience.”

Su Jiu didn’t understand. “What do you mean?”

“Pretending to not understand?” Ji Yuxian glanced at her hands, tightly gripping the blanket in place. He chuckled, and stood up from the bed, waving the drapes aside. “If you like pretending, then continue pretending!”

And with that, he put on his outer robe and walked out of the room.

With a creaking sound, the door opened and shut closed once more. The room was once again silent, but Ji Yuxian’s light, cold scent remained.

“What a strange man!”

Su Jiu let out a cold “humph.” She lifted a hand and with a flick of her wrist, extinguished the candle on the table.

She touched the jade pendant at her chest. In the darkness, she blinked her clear eyes, and then shut them. Time to sleep!
