6 – Sneak Attack at Night

It was gradually getting late, half of the blood-colored sun sunk into the horizon, the boundless night loomed at the edge of the land. Darkness was about to shroud the wasteland and the darkness creatures fond of darkness were about to awaken.

Even though they understood the argument behind the race against time, with the ineffable oppression coming from afar stretching their minds taut and making them run as if their lives were on the line, yet in the end, their physical strength had a limit. People in Luo You’s team had started to fall greatly behind, with one even lying on the ground, vomiting. The vomit even contained traces of blood from his lacerated trachea, followed by yellow-greenish bile.

Luo You and Arnold had to stop again. They had only ran for twelve kilometers, with another eight kilometers remaining before they reached their destination. According to their current plight, where the group of people could no longer move, just crossing one hundred meters would be difficult, not to mention eight kilometers.

Luo You turned around and said bluntly to Arnold: “I suggest we leave them be. In any case, they won’t be of any help in a battle against Evolvers. They’re just holding us back.”

“Don’t… Don’t look down on people!” Lin Geng came over while gasping for air, his legs trembling with every step he took. When he reached halfway, he lied on the ground, vomited everything he had in his stomach, wiped his mouth, and said while staring daggers at Luo You: “You’re just an Evolver, stop looking down on people! It’s just eight kilometers, I’ll show you.”

Lin Geng finished speaking, then struggled to run forward. In response, Luo You stuck out his foot to trip him. Lin Geng instantly lost balance and fell to the ground. He struggled desperately, yet he didn’t even had the strength to get up.

Among the newbies, Lin Geng’s physical constitution was considered to be pretty good. Therefore, the state of the others could very well be imagined. Arnold was also aware of this problem, yet he still said gloomily to Luo You: “Brother Luo, these people might not mean anything to you, but to me, they are my family. I’ll never abandon them.”

“Then I’ll leave you to take care of them.” Luo You looked ahead and said, “I can’t afford to waste my time here. I’ll go ahead and rush to the survivor base. You stay here. Look for a place to spend the night, and then come meet me tomorrow.”

Arnold opened his mouth to speak, but after thinking for a moment, he closed it without saying anything. At first, he wanted for Luo You to stay and look after the newbies overnight, while he himself, would go ahead to the survivor base. After all, Luo You had spent such a long time as a lone wolf in the wilderness, that his survivability in the countryside was bound to be rather great. He was the most suitable to lead the team.

Besides, Arnold was rather worried about this chap’s people skills. With his cold and reticent demeanor, he couldn’t carry a conversation with others.

However, Arnold had another thought. How would Luo You treat the five newbies if he was not present? People in the wilderness were particularly cold-blooded. He saw too much. Besides, he met Luo You just the day before, there was no way Luo You would give him any face.

Therefore, if Arnold were to go ahead and leave first, Luo You would most likely deliberately scheme against these newbies in the night and then say that he ‘got rid of the baggage’. This was not something which Arnold wanted to see.

Although Arnold had a passionate and upright personality, but in the Apocalypse, was there still anyone that wasn’t scheming? People that weren’t scheming had basically no chance to survive until now! After considering for a while, Arnold nodded his head and said, “Okay, you go ahead.”

Luo You’s no nonsense personality was clearly highlighted. Without even saying goodbye or giving any word of advice, he turned into an afterimage and rushed ahead in the blink of an eye. He was several times faster than when the team was moving.

Arnold sighed, then turned to the newbies and said: “You chaps, if you don’t want to be eaten by the Blood Wolves or any other monsters for that matter, then you’d better hurry up and look for a place to rest overnight!”

Luo You’s movement speed was very fast, but as he was delayed too much by the team, his movement speed could not keep up with the speed of the curtain of night falling down. When there were still 3 kilometers to go to reach the survivor base, the sun had completely sunk into the horizon – the night had arrived!

Luo You narrowed his eyes. Darkness was his old companion. Although he hadn’t specifically invested his evolution points into night vision, but after living in the wilderness for so many years, his eyes were already capable of seeing clearly through the darkness; although not as clearly as a genuine nocturnal creature.

Suddenly, Luo You’s exceedingly formidable perception started to issue warnings and the fine hairs on his body stood up – danger was approaching!

Luo You had no time to determine the direction from where the danger was coming. Suddenly, he heard a piercing hiss along with a swooshing sound, which followed by a feeling of weight pressing against his body. In this moment, apart from the piercing hiss he could hear beside his ears, he could still feel viscous saliva flow onto his body.

Under the close proximity, Luo You finally saw it clearly. The monster’s skin was dark purple, it had grey eyes on its ugly face, and it’s arms had evolved into wings. From the cicada-like membrane, it could be concluded that it couldn’t fly and could only perform short distance jumps and soars. The wings were covered in a sturdy, sharp carapace. Amidst the monster’s shouts, its sword-like fangs glinted with cold radiances.

A Nightmare!

Luo You felt that he was rather unlucky. Perhaps his luck was nearly worn out because last night was uneventful. This night, he actually met a Nightmare!

This was a creature that only roamed at night. It could not fly, but had an exceedingly strong jumping ability. It could cross dozens of meters in the blink of an eye, which was fatal for people who moved about at night. Humans who lacked the appropriate equipment and hadn’t invested their evolution points into night vision, couldn’t see as far as dozens of meters at night, not to mention the camouflage properties of the Nightmares’ skin.

The expressions on corpses of those attacked by the Nightmares often lacked any emotions because they didn’t even know how they died, their necks were crushed before their nervous system could react.

Besides their outstanding sneak attack ability, the Nightmares’ destructive power was also exceptionally lethal. With its thick hide, and sharp claws and teeth, this monster could easily tear apart ten able-bodied man barehanded. If one had to name its weakness, then it would be probably sunlight.

If it was an ordinary person, then they might have already been torn to shreds by the Nightmare, and even an Evolver like Arnold would admittedly have a few layers of skin shed. But Luo You was different. After wandering about the wilderness for so many years, this was not the first time he came across a Nightmare. He had ample experience!

After pouncing on its pray, due to it requiring its wings to maintain balance, the Nightmare’s main attacking method was to crush the neck of its pray with its sharp teeth, before slowly enjoying its meal.

Without thinking, Luo You welcomed the Nightmare’s bite with a punch to its throat. Although his hand was as fair as snow and as soft as feathers, and his fist was as graceful as a girl’s, yet the power contained therein was enough to knock the Nightmare silly.

The throat was a weak point for most creatures, and it was the same for the Nightmare. After suffering the heavy blow to its throat, the Nightmare felt its eyes go dark. While issuing hoarse growls and spitting out blood, it struggled to fling itself to the side.

The Nightmare still hadn’t pulled open the distance, when it suddenly discovered its wing being stuck. Shortly after, an ice-cold object was pressed against its head.

“Boom!” The terrifying gunshot sounded just like a shot from heavy artillery. The Nightmare didn’t even manage to emit a shriek before its head was burst into a pulp, with red and white splashing onto the ground. Large amounts of flesh was roasted by the high temperature brought along with the bullet, before turning into charred ash and falling to the ground.
