Delighted to finally see improvement in Ellie's condition, he walked over to the head of the bed and put his hand to her face. It didn't feel warm. But to be sure he opened the drawer near her bed and pulled out a thermometer. Because he was used to mercury thermometers from China he shook it before opening her mouth. The digital reading showed normal so he wiped it before replacing it into its normal position.
Her eyes opened a bit from his too loud motions and she stirred she spoke with a thick Cantonese, "Come back to bed Raj honey?"
As if shot by a gun, Henry instantly recoiled. His voice was deep and cold as he reminded her, "I'm Henry here. I own a couple of very boring businesses. I'm not as exciting as one of your racing flings you were quite famous for I may add according to Michael."
Her eyes opened with confusion and she assessed the situation around her with a bit of alarm before she recognized where she was. "I was having such a nice dream. Hello Henry. Are you sure that Raj wasn't my race car? You can't be sure it was one of my racing romances."
"You can't call a car 'honey?' You need something more daring."
"A car can be emotional and delicate at times too. I was really close to my model. You know I had a Toyota." She seemed to try to be humorous, but Henry knew that she was covering her longing.
A fake laugh was polite so he made an effort before swiftly changing the subject. "I am sure you'll have fun like that again soon. But now to more important matters. Are you foggy still over what happened last night? Do you remember Dr Wu doing an operation on you."
Her eyes locked as she braced for what he was about to say. He was confused for a bit why, then remembered as the patient she did not know what effect the operation had come to. Henry would have to tell her. "The surgery from all accounts went very well. We were anxious but Wu did an excellent job. She was confident that the end result could amount to a complete recovery on your part. I'm very glad to report."
Ellie's breathe quickened as she began to process what he had said. Her eyes were trained on his lips and he was dazed before she looked away. She strained her face as she dragged herself up to a sitting position before concentrating on her left leg. The emaciated limb bent up a couple inches and she turned to her right leg to do the same. She cursed loudly before trying again and clapping as tears began to flow. "Thank goodness." She said loudly as sobs began to rack her body. "It is true. I can move my legs. I got my legs back. I could walk. I can drive. I can do everything I want to do. I'm free."
