“오랜만에 넓은 평원을 보는군. 새소리가 뚝 끊겼어.”
“It’s been a long time since we saw a wide plain. The birdsong has cut off.”
“파커 백작의 영지는 저쪽이에요. 오늘 해가 지기 전에는 도착할 수 있을 것 같아요.”
“The territory of Earl Parker is that way. I think we can get there before the sun goes down today.”
“크아. 숲을 나오니 역시 살 것 같군. 시원한 맥주나 걸치면서 쉬면 좋을 텐데.”
“Kuahhh. I feel like I’m alive now that we have come out of the forest. It would be nice to have a cool beer and relax.”
“나중에 돌아가면서 엘림의 술집에도 들러보도록 하죠. 농부들이 직접 담은 술이라도 사고요.”

“그것도 마음에 들어. 괜찮지.”

렌달과 라엘리, 네드핸드, 헤르세, 그로나. 그리고 지스는 엘프의 숲을 나왔다.
Rendall, Laeli, Nedhand, Herz, Grona and Jess exited the Elven Forest.
엘프의 숲에서는 지스가 안내자 역할을 했다.

숲의 숨결을 마시면서 달리고, 알리움과 놀면서도 많은 곳을 돌아다녔다.

“으음. 우선 이쪽의 마나 파장이 불안정해진 것 같군.”
“Hmm. First of all, it seems that this mana wavelength is unstable.”
헤르세가 파커 백작의 영지에 도착하고 하늘을 보며 마나의 흐름을 관찰한 뒤에 말했다.

6서클의 마법사이기에 과거보다 수색 범위가 훨씬 넓어진 것이다.

물론 던전을 위장한 마법이 정상적으로 활성화되어 있는 상태였다면 이렇게 간단히 찾아내진 못했을 것이다.

“아닐세. 걸어서 2시간 정도.”

일행들은 던전이 있음직한 방향으로 걸어가면서 탄식을 금치 못했다.

The bones of the humans that had not been rescued were everywhere and many of those remains were of young children and women.
“남자들의 시체가 적은 것이 징병이 되어 다른 곳에서 싸우다가 죽은 것 같군요.”
“Seeing how there are not that many male bodies, they must have become conscripts and had died fighting elsewhere.”
“뼈들이 어질러져 있는 상태를 볼 때 몇몇 아이들은 잡아먹힌 모양이로군.”
“When looking at the state of these bones, some children seem to have been eaten.”
“오싹하네요.”
“Sends a chill down one’s spine.”
라엘리는 잔혹한 광경에 지스의 눈을 가렸다.
Laeli covered Jess’s eyes from the cruel sight.
아직은 어린아이에게 평생을 좌우할 만한 큰 정신적인 충격을 주고 싶지 않은 엄마의 마음이었다.

‘음. 나도 프레이슨 종족에 잘못 걸리면 저렇게 되겠군.’
Well, if I mess up and get caught by the Phraison tribe I guess I would end up like that.
시체에 대한 공포감은 거의 갖고 있지 않았다.
He held almost no fear of the corpses.
아주 어릴 때부터 그로나의 등에 업힌 채로 따라다니면서 몬스터와 인간들의 시체를 지겹도록 많이도 봐왔던 것이다.
Since he was very young he had seen many bodies of monsters and humans while being carried on Grona’s back.
현실에서야 죽음에 대한 공포나 위험도가 훨씬 적었다. 위험한 사고가 벌어지기는 하지만 그렇게 자주 있는 일은 아니었으니까.
In reality, the fear or risk of death was much less. There were dangerous incidents, but it didn’t happen very often. (Darknari: He’s talking about the other world here)
이 세계에서는 언제 갑자기 죽음이 자신의 일이 될 지도 모른다.
However in this world, death may come suddenly and without any reason.
훈련으로 끝없는 강함을 추구하는 것도 그것이 재미있기도 했지만 가능한 오래 살고 싶다는 이유에서였다.
It was fun to pursue endless strength through training, but he wanted to live as long as possible.
‘프레이슨 종족이 나를 삶아먹을까? 아니야. 단순하니까 구워먹을지도…….’

밤이 되니 잡생각을 하면서 천천히 이동했다.
As it became night, they moved slowly while thinking useless thoughts.
백골들이 푸르스름한 빛을 내는 땅을 걸었다.
They tread on the white bones that gave a bluish glow.
횃불도 들지 않았기 때문에 어두웠고 불어오는 바람에 풀과 나뭇가지들이 흔들리면서 이상한 소리를 냈다.
On account of not taking up torches, it was dark and the grass and branches were rustling from the wind blowing and making strange noises.
다들 으스스한 기분이 들었지만 도굴 경력들이 많다보니 잘 참아낼 수 있었다.
Everyone felt spooked, but they were able to thoroughly suppress it since they had a lot of experience robbing tombs.
도굴꾼에게 시체란 진열 상품과 크게 다르지도 않았으니까.
For a robber, a corpse is not much different from a merchandise display.
지스도 정말 무서운 게 뭔지 아는 나이다.
Jess is also old enough to know what is really scary.
‘엄마 라엘리의 잔소리만큼 무서운 게 없지. 아빠가 꼼짝도 못할 정도야.’

던전의 입구는 파커 백작의 성에서 산 두 개를 지나서 있었다.
The entrance to the dungeon was past the two mountains from the castle of Earl Parker.
사람들이 자주 찾아갈 이유가 없는 울창한 산림이 있는 곳에 마법으로 위장까지 되어 있기에 여간해서는 찾아내기가 어려운 위치였다.
It was a difficult place to find because it was camouflaged by magic and in a dense forest where there was no reason for people to visit frequently.
헤르세가 불안정한 마나를 다시 되돌리자 거짓말처럼 던전의 입구가 드러났다.
Shortly after Herz restored the unstable mana, as if it was a lie the entrance to the dungeon was revealed.
“제가 먼저 들어가겠습니다.”
“I’ll go in first.”
“같이 가세.”
“Let’s go in together.”
렌달과 네드핸드가 무기를 뽑아든 채로 동굴 안으로 걸음을 옮겼다.
Randall and Nedhand stepped into the cave with their weapons pulled out.
지스도 리시안서스에게 선물 받은 활을 꺼내서 들었다.
Jess took out the bow that was presented to him by Lisianthus.
‘몬스터들이 있다면 써먹어 봐야 되겠군. 도움은 충분히 되겠지.’
If there are monsters, I should use it. I should be of enough help with this.
허리에는 검까지도 착용하고 있었다.
He was even wearing a sword at his waist.
렌달이 엘림의 대장간에 가서 사온 소검이다.
It was a small sword that Rendall bought at a smithy in Ellim.
그로나는 예전에 업고 다니던 아기가 벌써 이렇게 컸다고 기특해하는 시선을 보냈다. 그녀도 자신이 쓰는 활을 꺼냈다.
This gave Grona the impression that the baby she used to carry around on her back had grown up. She also took out her own bow.
그녀가 먼저 지스에게 제안을 했다.
She first made a proposal to Jess.
“우리 내기 할래요?”
“Do you want to make a bet?”
“어떤 내기요?”
“What kind of bet?”
“몬스터를 많이 잡기. 벌칙으로는 설거지.”
“To catch a lot of monsters. The penalty is washing dishes.”
“좋죠.”
“Okay.”
엘프와 궁술을 겨루는 것만큼 무모한 일은 없다. 하지만 정령술이나 공격 마법에 더 특화되어 있는 다크 엘프라면 해볼 만은 했다.
There is nothing as foolish as fighting an elf in archery. However, it was worth a try since dark elves are more specialized in spirit arts and offensive spells.
더구나 자신은 대륙 최고의 궁술가 리시안서스에게 배운 몸이고, 던전이라면 활의 사정거리와 정확성보다는 빨리 겨눠서 쏘는 것이 중요했으니까.
Moreover, he learned from Lisianthus, the best archer in the continent, and for a dungeon it was more important to shoot faster than range and accuracy.
지스와 그로나는 라엘리를 호위하며 동굴 안으로 들어갔다.

“진실을 감추는 문. 보이는 것을 보이지 않게 하라.”

헤르세가 다른 방해꾼들이 찾아오지 않게 하기 위하여 던전 입구에 임시로 환영 마법을 설치하고 따라들어왔다.
Herz temporarily set up a phantasm spell at the entrance to the dungeon to keep other interlopers from coming in.

지스는 아저씨들의 응원을 받으면서 던전에서 발견한 함정을 해체하기 위하여 조심스럽게 다가갔다.
Gis received the support of his uncles and carefully approached to dismantle the traps found in the dungeon.
이번 던전에는 바닥과 벽에 함정들이 설치가 되어 있었다. 마법으로 작동되는 것들도 있지만 기계적인 장치들도 상당하다.
There were traps built on the floor and walls in the dungeon. Some were magical, but there was also a significant amount of mechanical devices.
사실 도굴을 처음 하는 이들은 마법사의 던전에 과연 기계 장치가 필요한지 의구심을 드러내는 사람도 상당히 많은 편이다.
In fact, quite a number of first time robbers question the need for mechanical devices in a magician’s dungeon.
하지만 거의 대부분 요긴하게 쓰였다.
However for the most part they were very useful.
마법사는 생전에 혼자 연구를 하면서 보물과 연구 자료를 노리고 들어오는 강도들에 대해 경계하기 마련이었다.
Magicians would spend their lifetime studying alone, and as such were on guard against burglars who came in pursuit of their treasures and research materials.
이때 침입자가 단순하게 실력이 뛰어난 마법사 혼자라면 화살 발사 장치 등은 효과적인 방어 수단이 된다.
At this point, if the intruder is simply a single skillful magician, an arrow launcher and others like it become an effective defense tool.
도둑 출신이나, 드워프가 끼어 있다고 해도 시간을 벌어주는 용도로 쓸모가 있어서 그 사이에 자리를 피하거나 적과 싸울 준비를 하는 것이 가능했다.
Even if a thief or a dwarf was involved, it was useful as a means of buying time to vacate the place or prepare to fight the enemy.
마법사들은 자신의 던전에 미리 공격 마법진, 방어 마법진을 설치해놓고 발동시킬 수도 있었다.

마법사의 사후에는 연구 기록과 재료, 시신 등을 지키는 역할을 하지만 생존해 있을 당시에 더 든든하게 쓰였던 것이다.

몇 개의 돌을 더 들어보고는 매듭 부분을 찾아냈다. 이것을 풀어서 옆에 튀어나온 고리에 묶어두면 임시로 함정이 작동되지 않게 된다.

하지만 어떤 함정이라도 발견만 한다면 대부분 안전하게 해체할 수 있었다.
However most of the traps could be safely dismantled if they were discovered.
도굴꾼들 역시 끊임없이 기술을 향상시키고 있었으니까 말이다.
Since the tomb robbers were constantly improving their skills as well.
“그럼 계속 전진하지. 마법 장치들을 봐서는 상당한 수준이 있었던 마법사였던 것 같군.”
“Then let’s keep moving forward. Looking at the magic devices, the magician was at a considerable level.”
“여기까지 온 보람은 있는 것 같아요.”

“오랜만에 한몫을 챙겼으면 좋겠는데…….”

탐험은 다시 계속 되었다.

함정들이 숨겨져 있는 곳들은 지스와 네드핸드가 함께 찾아내고, 해체하는 것은 지스가 전담을 했다.

오랜 시간이 지난 함정들은 제대로 작동을 하지 않거나, 위험하지 않을 만큼 쓸모가 없어져서 지스에게는 좋은 도굴 학습이 됐다.

“힘들면 조금 쉬어요.”
“Take a little rest if you find it difficult.”
지스의 말 한 마디에 곧바로 걱정을 해주는 라엘리, 네드핸드, 렌달, 그로나!

훈련은 강하게 했지만 실전에서는 위험이 많은 만큼 무리를 하지 않게 했다. 하지만 지스는 그런 이유에 멈춘 건 아니었다.

아주 어릴 때부터 그로나의 등에 업힌 채로 따라다니면서 몬스터와 인간들의 시체를 지겹도록 많이도 봐왔던 것이다.

다들 으스스한 기분이 들었지만 도굴 경력들이 많다보니 잘 참아낼 수 있었다.

던전의 입구는 파커 백작의 성에서 산 두 개를 지나서 있었다.
The entrance to the dungeon was past the two mountains from the castle of Earl Parker.
사람들이 자주 찾아갈 이유가 없는 울창한 산림이 있는 곳에 마법으로 위장까지 되어 있기에 여간해서는 찾아내기가 어려운 위치였다.
It was a difficult place to find because it was camouflaged by magic and in a dense forest where there was no reason for people to visit frequently.
헤르세가 불안정한 마나를 다시 되돌리자 거짓말처럼 던전의 입구가 드러났다.
Shortly after Herz restored the unstable mana, as if it was a lie the entrance to the dungeon was revealed.
“제가 먼저 들어가겠습니다.”
“I’ll go in first.”
“같이 가세.”
“Let’s go in together.”
렌달과 네드핸드가 무기를 뽑아든 채로 동굴 안으로 걸음을 옮겼다.
Randall and Nedhand stepped into the cave with their weapons pulled out.
지스도 리시안서스에게 선물 받은 활을 꺼내서 들었다.
Jess took out the bow that was presented to him by Lisianthus.
‘몬스터들이 있다면 써먹어 봐야 되겠군. 도움은 충분히 되겠지.’
If there are monsters, I should use it. I should be of enough help with this.
허리에는 검까지도 착용하고 있었다.

엘프와 궁술을 겨루는 것만큼 무모한 일은 없다. 하지만 정령술이나 공격 마법에 더 특화되어 있는 다크 엘프라면 해볼 만은 했다.

더구나 자신은 대륙 최고의 궁술가 리시안서스에게 배운 몸이고, 던전이라면 활의 사정거리와 정확성보다는 빨리 겨눠서 쏘는 것이 중요했으니까.

지스는 아저씨들의 응원을 받으면서 던전에서 발견한 함정을 해체하기 위하여 조심스럽게 다가갔다.
Gis received the support of his uncles and carefully approached to dismantle the traps found in the dungeon.
이번 던전에는 바닥과 벽에 함정들이 설치가 되어 있었다. 마법으로 작동되는 것들도 있지만 기계적인 장치들도 상당하다.

사실 도굴을 처음 하는 이들은 마법사의 던전에 과연 기계 장치가 필요한지 의구심을 드러내는 사람도 상당히 많은 편이다.

도둑 출신이나, 드워프가 끼어 있다고 해도 시간을 벌어주는 용도로 쓸모가 있어서 그 사이에 자리를 피하거나 적과 싸울 준비를 하는 것이 가능했다.

마법사들은 자신의 던전에 미리 공격 마법진, 방어 마법진을 설치해놓고 발동시킬 수도 있었다.

마법사의 사후에는 연구 기록과 재료, 시신 등을 지키는 역할을 하지만 생존해 있을 당시에 더 든든하게 쓰였던 것이다.

“해체하는 방법으로는 독을 중화시키거나 봉인해버리는 방식도 있지만 무식하고 손이 많이 가고……. 어디 보자.”
“The way to dismantle it is to neutralize or seal the poison, but that is idiotic and takes too much effort……. Let’s see.”
몇 개의 돌을 더 들어보고는 매듭 부분을 찾아냈다. 이것을 풀어서 옆에 튀어나온 고리에 묶어두면 임시로 함정이 작동되지 않게 된다.

“그럼 계속 전진하지. 마법 장치들을 봐서는 상당한 수준이 있었던 마법사였던 것 같군.”

“여기까지 온 보람은 있는 것 같아요.”

함정들이 숨겨져 있는 곳들은 지스와 네드핸드가 함께 찾아내고, 해체하는 것은 지스가 전담을 했다.
The places where the traps were hidden were found by Jess and Nedhand, and Jess was in charge of dismantling them.
오랜 시간이 지난 함정들은 제대로 작동을 하지 않거나, 위험하지 않을 만큼 쓸모가 없어져서 지스에게는 좋은 도굴 학습이 됐다.

헤르세는 던전이 작지 않아서 더욱 기대를 품고 있었다. 그리고 모퉁이를 돌아가려고 할 무렵 지스가 사람들을 제지했다.
Herz was much more hopeful because the dungeon was not too small. Then when they tried to turn around the corner, Jess held them back.
“잠시만요.”
“Wait.”
“왜 그러니?”
“What’s wrong?”
“무슨 일이냐?”
“What’s the matter?”
“겁이 나면 그만 해도 된다. 지금까지만 해도 잘 했어.”
“You may stop if you are frightened. You’ve done well until now.”
“힘들면 조금 쉬어요.”
“Take a little rest if you find it difficult.”
지스의 말 한 마디에 곧바로 걱정을 해주는 라엘리, 네드핸드, 렌달, 그로나!
From just a single word from Jess, Laeli, Nedhand, Rendall, and Grona immediately expressed concern!
훈련은 강하게 했지만 실전에서는 위험이 많은 만큼 무리를 하지 않게 했다. 하지만 지스는 그런 이유에 멈춘 건 아니었다.
In training they were harsh, but in practice they didn’t want him to over exert himself if there was a lot of danger. But that wasn’t why Jess stopped.
