Immortals…

Beings that decided the life and death of lower species…

They look like humans but… they're not on the same level.

Since birth, they were taught to worship them as gods, and well, in their eyes, they ARE gods.

If you ask Tanya what she thinks of them, she would mechanically reply: "They had the benevolence to authorize us to live, and we must repay them with absolute obedience".

As for Squatting Eagle…

Looking at him trying to imitate a cobra, his moon in the open air… She was unable to associate him with immortals, or else, her image of them would totally shatter…

Anyway, after talking with the group, they decided to learn how to pilot this giant… thing.

He gave them last generation simulators like it was nothing.

That guy always seems to have a high background but… his name… his way of acting… Tanya really can't bring herself to imagine him as an elegant immortal.

Until she thinks about something.

Maybe… yes! Maybe he was an immortal's plaything!

Tanya's mind was still pure. She, in reality, didn't know what a plaything was, apart from its etymology: something for immortals to play, but she heard once that it was a great honor.

Once Tanya resolved this problem in her mind, she dived into her training.

While he was trying to slice a banana with imaginary fangs, she was training.

While he was nomming at it (with quite a lot of nom), she was training.

While he was doing a mini banana theater, with "noms" as actors, she was training.

When he nommed again the bananas, she started to have questions.

-Wasn't the race supposed to end long ago?

She asked Squatting Eagle.

-Yeah, it's time for nommer too. But as we're the only ones surviving, they are forced to wait for us to finish the race or die.

-Eh.

-We're quite fortunate to be in such a dangerous race. Otherwise, we wouldn't have so much time for training.

-…

She was quite speechless. Like, did he really call this training? Playing with bananas?*

This isn't training! This is some kind of… thing.

She was so speechless she almost forgot what she wanted to say.

-What kind of backing do you have?

He proudly smiles and points to the sky.

-Up there.

In her mind, Tanya confirms what she thought he was, without even knowing what a 'plaything' was.

...

...

*I had that irresistible feeling that I should maybe purify my mind… I'm so used to make jokes in my first novel that I almost wrote: "Playing with bananas? Well, even if some people are really training women with bananas… these are quite bigger and longer ones."
