Case 3: Angina (Part 1)

When I checked Neumann’s condition the next day, he had almost completely recovered. Although it was only acute appendicitis, his quick recovery was also thanks to magic. After an appendectomy, the patient would typically be discharged from the hospital after confirming the absence of any organ damage and ensuring the intestines functioned properly. Although that was usually the case, when his senior in the medical office had an appendectomy, he resumed work the next day.

The healer in the clinic was named Hugh, who appeared to be slightly older than me. He was a capable healer with a decent amount of mana, but when I asked Neumann, I was told he had a bad drinking habit and didn’t have a very good reputation.

「Shut up, or I’ll kick you out!」

「That’s fine with me, I want to go home already!」

「Are you joking?! You need to stay here for another week!」

There were many patients who couldn’t be cured with healing magic alone. These patients were treated in a basic hospitalization facility attached to Hugh’s clinic which he managed all by himself.

「You can leave this place to me. I’ll do my job.」

After my examination, I determined that Neumann didn’t need any further treatment from me, so I only had to worry about myself now. Therefore, I left his care to Hugh and started preparations for settling in this town.

I bought a small hut on the outskirts of Yggdrasil. This was going to be my-no, Reina’s and my base. I planned to start bit by bit from here.

「Hey, what are we starting with?」

「Well, first of all, I’m preparing to turn this into a clinic, so I’ll need to collect instruments and medicines for treatment.」

There were a lot of medicines that needed to be acquired. Just as there was no magic to cure everything, surgery couldn’t cure everything either. For the time being, we bought the minimum amount of furniture required for daily living and brought in our luggage. After everything was arranged, there was barely any space we could use for the clinic, since I forgot to take into account Reina’s bed. It was possible a new clinic needed to be built. Nevertheless, we needed to work on improving this residence-cum-storehouse.

「We don’t have much money, so we’ll have to get the materials ourselves and find people who can make instruments.」

There should be skilled craftsmen in Yggdrasil. Surgical instruments were crucial, and I couldn’t afford to use a sewing needle for suturing forever.

「So, we’ll start with…?」

「We’ll collect and prepare ingredients for medicine, as well as materials for the instruments.」

「I shouldn’t have handed in my guild card.」

My S rank guild card was already handed in to Raven. If I were to accept a request from the Adventurer’s Guild in Yggdrasil, I would need to have my card reissued. Since I had few acquaintances here, it was very difficult to prove my identity.

「I knew this would happen.」

Reina had a smug look on her face. In her hands was my golden S rank guild card.

「When I told Raven I was going to quit, I took it with me too, because you said you were going to Yggdrasil.」

Good job Reina! I almost hugged her without thinking, but I controlled myself. She wouldn’t want to be hugged by an old man like me.

「You’re the best Reina! Now we can go collect materials while making money from requests.」

「But you and I are the only ones here, so we’ll have to hire a vanguard adventurer…」

Reina was a mage and I was a healer. There was no one to prevent demons from charging into us.

「It can’t be helped. I guess I’ll do it for now.」

Saying that, I took out my mace from my bag. I thought it was possible if there weren’t any strong demons since I was still an S rank healer. I had some confidence in my abilities since I had been evading demons’ attacks while healing my allies.

Let’s test it out by going to the guild first. I’d been busy buying the hut and furniture for the past few days, but this wasn’t the first time I’d come to the Adventurers’ Guild in Yggdrasil. The last time I was there was when I needed to collect the drop of the World Tree for a request. I’d thought it would have been nice to have a guide when I climbed the World Tree, but at the time, there were no adventurers who could keep up with our party, so we abandoned the idea. The area around the town was relatively peaceful, unlike Levantein, so the rank of the local adventurers weren’t very high.

「There’s a request to kill Gigantoads. I really want to get the parotid glands of this monster.」

The so-called toad oil, extracted from a frogs’ parotid gland, could be used as a healing salve as well as a cardiotonic agent for strengthening the heart. The parotid gland of Gigantoads was considered to be particularly highly effective, according to a book written by a pharmacist in this world. Therefore, since cardiotonic medications could be purified from the parotid gland of a toad demon, I thought it was possible to make a more potent medication if it was from a Gigantoad. It required high level pharmaceutical magic to get the poison out of the ingredients, but I could do it.

We decided to defeat the Gigantoad and went through the simple procedures to obtain the request. S rank cards were rare in Yggdrasil, so the guild receptionist was surprised, but it seemed the other adventurers didn’t notice anything.

 ***

Gigantoads were known to live in swamps. I came to remove their parotid glands, but there were also many other medicinal herbs in the swamps south of Yggdrasil, so I could find many useful plants while searching for Gigantoads.

「Oh, we can also use this medicinal herb.」

「You really know them well, don’t you? Up till now, you’ve been collecting things whenever we went on requests. Did you already know about medicines back then?」

「Yep, that’s right.」

Even when I was an adventurer in Levantein, I often bought books and read manuscripts in the library to obtain more knowledge about medicine. Since I was an S rank adventurer, my income was decent, but I didn’t have much in savings because books were very expensive.

「I didn’t think it was strange when I first heard you could refine the drop of the World Tree, but when I think about it now, it sounds amazing.」

「Oh, right.」

Pharmaceutical magic was basically only practiced by pharmacists. Even if it could be used, it was a low level magic, and could only extract the mana contained in herbs for potions. When it was clumsily used, it was like squeezing fruit. Nevertheless, potions were useful for adventurers who needed extra mana during quests.

This was why pharmaceutical magic in this world wasn’t developed much. There were a few pharmacists who were unable to use healing magic, but were instead able to use first class pharmaceutical spells, although there were some problems.

The key aspect of pharmaceutical magic was not the usage of magic itself, but the image of “what do you want to extract?” Most pharmacists typically thought, “I want to extract mana” when they used pharmaceutical magic. Potions that boosted regeneration of or restored mana were made like this, and adventurers bought it.

In other words, there were very few pharmacists who used pharmaceutical magic to make medicines that could actually treat diseases. I’d thoroughly read a book about herbalism where a pharmacist, who didn’t have much mana and couldn’t use pharmaceutical magic proficiently, tried to make an herbal concoction and somehow managed to do so. This “herbalism” was regarded as a type of questionable folk remedy in this world where healing magic was common, and most of the general public didn’t believe in its efficacy.

However, there were regions with no healers or pharmacists, so the general populace had no choice but to rely on herbalism. I absolutely had to compile the knowledge of these people who gathered such information and use it to create medicine in this world.

「Shuji, the drop of the World Tree requires on-site pharmaceutical magic. It’s the kind of magic a pharmacist usually uses.」

「Yeah, that’s right.」

「… Hey.」

「Yeah, that’s right.」

Hey, isn’t that Hikarabidake over there? It was a poisonous mushroom that, if consumed whole, caused the body to excrete all its water in urine. However, if the dosage and usage were properly adjusted, it could become a medicine that reduced the workload on the heart. I thought this ingredient was almost the same as the ones used in Japan. I was very lucky to find a mushroom that didn’t grow abundantly here and was very expensive to buy.

This Hikarabidake needs to be washed, dried, and ground into powder, right? To start off, I’ll have to make a place where I could dry them under the sun. Then I need to buy a mortar to grind it into powder.

「Hold on…」

「Yeah, that’s right.」

「Are you listening?」

「Yeah, that’s right… I mean, yes.」

I was engrossed in collecting till I was kicked on my back because I wasn’t listening to Reina’s talk. My head got fully submerged in the swamp.

「Gasp So meeean.」

「That’s because you weren’t listening! Hmph.」

The angry Reina stood with her arms crossed. Meanwhile, I was completely covered in mud. Incidentally, the reason I was picking aquatic plants in the swamp was because my motto was to turn everything into profit.

「Wash!」

Magic in this world was very useful. There was even magic to cleanse your body, so public sanitation was surprisingly good. However, this “Wash” spell didn’t have any sterilizing effect. Even if it was used as a preventive care, the therapeutic value was low.

I became clean again. Imagination seemed to be important while casting magic, so I could use magic quite efficiently. That was the reason I was able to climb my way up to S rank despite the fact that my total mana wasn’t much. In this case, I was using a detergent commercial as the image for the spell.

「Let’s complete the subjugation of the Gigantoad quickly.」

We headed to the place where Gigantoads had been sighted, while I apologized to a very grumpy Reina. I placed the gathered medicinal herbs together with their roots and soil into a cart. We advanced while somehow finding a path where we could bring the cart along.

「There they are, slowly crawling around.」

「You’re right, there’re so many.」

There were dozens of GIgantoads in the area where they had been seen. They were huge frogs, double the size of a human. They were very conspicuous with various shades of colors on their bodies. I didn’t think they were rare, but I didn’t expect so many to be there.

「So, the parotid gland right? How many of them do you need?」

Reina unfurled the request paper and read it again. Oh right, there’s that. She confirmed the subjugation proof section. Her talking didn’t mean her mood was good yet. In fact, it looked like she was going to take her anger out on the Gigantoads.

「One is enough, but I’ll be happy if I can get two of them… Reina-san?」

A crackling magic overflowed from both her hands. Ah, this was seriously bad. I apologized in my heart to the Gigantoads who would take my place by receiving her outburst of anger, while I covered my ears.

「Thunderbolt!!」

Reina cast lightning magic, which was her specialty. It was a flashy magic with terrifyingly high destructive power and range. The Thunderbolt took out the Gigantoads one by one till two were left.

The materials… Gigantoad’s materials… I decided to stop thinking when I saw the Gigantoads on the verge of being burnt to ashes. Then Reina used ice magic to avoid damaging the remaining two as much as possible. I thought it would’ve been nice if the hind legs were left out, as they were the proof of subjugation, so I took out my dismantling knife.

 ***

「This… is surprisingly good.」

Reina was eating fried Gigantoads. She said she would never eat frog meat, but I’d dismantled the Gigantoads and brought them to the guild’s bar and had them fried. I loved chicken, and frogs had a similar texture. Seeing me eating them with relish, Reina extended her chopsticks for some too. Her face relaxed while exclaiming her surprise. This was the face I liked.

After all that, the subjugation proof for only two Gigantoads were collected. I replanted the gathered herbs in the fields I’d prepared in the back of the hut, reported our request completion to the guild, and the day ended. We decided to go to a public bath on our way back after this meal.
