Chapter 003: Nottingham Forest

Kailar’s protector or guardian was none other than Leyton. Previously, he fought alongside Andrea Ettorek in hundreds of battles, great and small alike. After the birth of Andrea Ettorek’s newborn child, Leyton was all the more honored to be demoted from captain of the knights to Kailar’s personal protector.

His demotion hardly specified his lacking in skills and capabilities. Rather, his extraordinary talents had been the sole reason why Andrea Ettorek pulled him from the ranks with means of guarding his one and only child.

He was a fearless knight worthy of many praises.

Near and inside Nottingham Forest, none dared approach the forest but those old fogey hunters for the forest was rumored to be packed with devil beasts. Leyton had no problems rushing into the forest with his armored horse but he had the child to tend and care for. If by chance they encounter packs of devil beasts, he’s afraid the aftermath might cause Kailar’s fair skin complexion to tear apart out of fear.

But it looks like he’d been overthinking the matters greatly. From the looks of it, Kailar had fallen in love with the scenic and ethereal view Nottingham Forest provided since the age of two as he traveled time to time with the Grand Duke. The only fear he seemed to suffer from was the horror of Leyton’s constant warning and follow-ups in case of any dangers. Kailar’s face was hard that he looked like he’d wring the life of one’s soul.

Leyton sighed wistfully.

The two horses Leyton prepared to go we’re of purebred English descent. The horses haven’t mixed themselves with the breeds from Ireland and thus were considered a mighty fine horse used amongst the elites of the elites.

And with Leyton having had the position of captain of the knights previously, he was and still is an elite amongst elite.

He had long brown hair, strong nose, and big hazel eyes alongside an elite warhorse. Such fine specimen was vied amongst the women of Red Leaf who longed to marry him, even going as far as proclaiming Leyton as their dream lover.

From the side, there was the little knight who would ride the snow white horse in plated armor. He too held his own wicked yet endearing charm. Kailar had silver-white hair and pairs of big charismatic eyes an oceanic green. From them comes a sort of intensity, honesty, and gentleness. He had full lips, neatly shaped brows, and nose slender and curved. His little jaw was sharp. Dressed in white aristocratic robes, it exuded his great spirit and noble ways. Though he was only four years of age, he had a sort of captivating temperament one could not resist.

Kailar hadn’t worn a hard plated armor like Leyton and instead proceeded to dress himself in casual aristocratic clothing as if going on an outing.

With everything prepared, the two figures, Kailar and Leyton stepped foot out of the gates of Red Leaf and galloped fast towards Nottingham Forest.

After a while, the horses slowed down and took a leisure pace without any slight pressure. They looked relaxed and carefree leaving Kailar deep in thought.

Leyton’s armor plus his equipments weighed more or less about sixty kilograms short. In addition to his weight coupled with the horse’s plated armor, the total weight the horse carried should be around three hundred twenty kilograms. Galloping, no, even walking should prove a difficult feat for the horse but the it looked rather relaxed. It was like the weight hadn’t bothered the horse.

Kailar knew fairly well the animals in his previous life were incapable of carrying heavy weighted items with the sole exception of elephants.

This is unscientific!

After pacing themselves towards Nottingham Forest for a good while, Kailar parted his lips, finally asking Leyton the question which had plagued the depths of his heart. “Leyton, why can your horse carry such a heavy thing so easily. The weight overall should be more than three hundred kilograms.”

Layton shortly glanced a look towards Kailar and saw his demeanor calm as ever with a gentle smile written on his face.

Thereafter, Leyton looked at the neck of his horse. With a soft smile adorning his face, Leyton patted the horse’s neck. “You know, Lord Kailar, this horse is a crossbreed of an average beast to that of a devil beast. This mighty fine horse has half the blood of a devil beast and such possess outstanding strength. For elite knights, such horse is a top choice.”

“Devil beast?! It’s a half devil beast…” Kailar quickly grasped the key to unlocking the answer and immediately pondered over the matter.

“Right, Leyton, are we able to breed them?” The western portion of Red Leaf was a vast endless prairie. If they could encourage the everyday folks to breed similar horses, it’d prove rather useful for the kingdom. Not only would it be great to use in everyday life, the use of such horse mixed with the blood of a devil beast would prove useful in times of war.

In an era without technological advancement, horses would prove a primal driving force in this world.

“Haha, Lord Kailar, that is an amazing proposition! Actually, the idea had long been proposed years ago but the success rate of breeding a horse with half the blood of a devil beast is truly low. As far as I’m concerned, only the elites amongst elites have the qualifications of riding a mighty fine horse. If you manage to grab a couple horses in return, then it might be possible to see if we can produce some success.”

The elites naturally does not refer to the knights in question. In fact, the knights prepare the horses, armors, and weapons solely by themselves. The only advantage of garnering a horse mixed with the blood of a devil beast require that you be of aristocratic class and with the title of an elite knight hence only the elites amongst elites have the chance of putting such mighty fine horse to use.

The average folks of low birth participating in times of war we’re at an uneven disadvantage. Without resource or good luck, chances of garnering a horse like Leyton’s dimmed greatly. All they had was the standard leather armor and helmet, plain sword but although they were plain, the weapon itself was not so simple as they were crafted by the hands of a fine blacksmith.

And of course, one can trade their sword for a bow and arrow if one prioritized in that skill.

But even then, it proved disadvantageous. To shoot into a knight’s heavy plated armor was only making himself a fool.

To kill a knight with the use of a bow and arrow was only based on one’s luck and skill.

Hence from this point of view, it can be considered why this world lacked archers. It’s merely an unpopular occupation that not even the kingdom can gather five hundred archers as opposed to knights which numbered in the thousands.

To gain status, to gain merit, to gain recognition—one must tread upon the path of knighthood!

For example, Kailar’s father, Andrea Ettorek was a man who had worked all his time without worries for he as a knight enjoyed a great hefty sum of salary earned. The only thing he needed to do was to become the strongest person the world had ever known, to become the highest fighting power in the world as a knight.

But there weren’t too many elite knights available. Under Andrea Ettorek’s rule, he had only two hundred or so knights, and fifty of them were made Lord or Baron. Among the fifty, only fifteen were among the elites of the elites.

The statistics made the child rather disappointed.

Finally, they reached the outskirts of Nottingham Forest. They remained unmoving for a short while before entering the forest in silence and heading towards the cabin.
