The next morning, Liz woke up to her phone ringing.
"Sis! Write them down! I want chocolate, loads of chocolate! And candy- loads and loads of colorful candy! And-"
As she heard Derek's cute voice list items one after the other, the drowsiness left her eyes as she smiled.
She missed the little kid already, and she wished that she could pick him up right now and pinch those chubby cheeks.
"Slow down, slow down. I told you to pick things unique to where I go. Not everything in general."
"But sis, if you get stuff from there, it'll be unique cos you bought it there! So get everything! I'll repeat my list! Most important-chocolate…"
"All right, all right! Just give it to mom, she'll send it to me! Now, how's school? Any more problems with bullies?"
"Hehe, nope! I'm the hero of the school now! Everyone looks up to me for bringing justice! The other day, Clara kissed me on the cheek and hugged me too!"
Hearing this, Liz froze, remembering what had happened the night before.
What the hell? This little munchkin of hers had advanced to the same stage in a relationship as her?
Of course, she knew that she couldn't think of it that way, but she still did.
'Wow, Liz. Good going, girl! At your current pace, maybe you'll have your first kiss after Derek gets married!'
'SHUT UP!'
Ritually cursing at her inner voice, Liz said, "Clara? Who's that? Why didn't you tell me about her before?"
"Huh? Her? She's just one of all those who said they liked me, sis! I'm the superhero of my school, you know!"
Ok, that was it. She gave up on the topic.
Clearly, her little brother was different from her. Of course, she felt happy for him, but also a little possessive.
"Hey! Those cheeks are for me and mum to kiss! Don't you go letting every random girl from school kiss you! Otherwise, I'll not get you any chocolates!"
"Sheesh, fine. Just get loads! I wanna give some to Clara, too!"
And that was the final straw.
Completely giving up this time, Liz just said, "Fine. Give the phone to Mary."
After talking to her mom for a few minutes and reminding her to go with Luke to his checkup, Liz hung up and started to get ready.
Today was the meeting with the union leader, and she was supposed to reach the factory first and meet with him to try and find out his demands before the CEO arrived.
Right now, she was both looking forward to seeing the CEO, and also dreading it.
The dread, was, of course, due to the fear that there might be awkwardness between them even though the short letter he had sent last night showed that he hadn't taken anything negatively, at least.
Of course, she had felt the way he had reacted during the hug, so she knew that that possibility had been remote.
Only, the letter confirmed it, and she felt like thanking him for that.
Reaching the factory, Liz was surprised when she saw a large crowd of people outside.
They were all wearing factory coveralls, and they seemed to be chanting something.
Because the car was shutting out most of the noise from outside, she couldn't understand what they were saying.
So, she lowered the window a bit but moved back in shock when she felt like she was bombarded by the rage-filled shouts from the workers.
"CHEATERS!"
"WE DEMAND JUSTICE!"
"FAIR WAGES OR WE WALK!"
Quickly closing the window, Liz sighed.
Clearly, it was the age-old problem of not being paid enough.
However, Liz was slightly puzzled. If it was such a simple thing, the company would have agreed to a hike in salary after seeing that this problem was affecting the product pipeline itself.
However, the CEO was stepping in.
Clearly, there was also some other reason.
Thankfully, the crowd parted to let in her car, and when she got down and looked, she saw that the inside of the factory was empty except for 2 people waiting for her.
"Miss. Elizabeth? Right this way. The union leader is waiting for you."
Nodding, Liz followed them and was led to a room inside the factory.
Entering it, she saw a man with a bald head smoking a cigarette.
On seeing her, he quickly put it out before saying with a smile, "Welcome, Miss. Elizabeth! I hope our boys didn't cause you too much trouble."
Hearing this, Liz was surprised.
She was expecting a disgruntled employee who was fighting with the management to increase the wages of his co-employees who must be suffering.
However, this man's mood was fine, and he even seemed happy.
Taking a few seconds, she answered, "No, they didn't. Mr. Sam, right? Can I ask what your demands are?"
Although he had put the cigarette out, the stench was still in the room. Seeing Liz frown slightly on breathing in, the union leader walked to the window before opening it and saying, "Oh, where's the fun in that? Let the CEO come, and then I'll talk. I know you were sent to try and make me tell you our demands so that your CEO can prepare beforehand, but that ain't gonna happen. So, just sit down and make yourself comfortable. Jonas, here, makes some mean tea. Can you go get her some, Jonas?"
"Oh, that's all right-"
BANG!
Suddenly banging his hand on the table in front of which he had come to stand after opening the window, Sam looked into Liz's eyes with a momentary expression of anger.
"Have some. Jonas, go."
The anger was gone the next second, replaced by that genial attitude from before.
Meanwhile, Liz was thoroughly startled.
What the hell had she just walked into?
This man seemed more like a psychopath than a union leader.
Taking out her phone, she was about to send a message saying the same, but she stopped when she heard Sam speak.
"Don't bother messaging your boss. He's already here."
