It all began here, at a food stall in front of our school just a little walk from the cemetery. The Waffles Station was full of people back then. I was almost at the front of the line when a guy just came barging in and talked to the seller. The seller was so into talking to the guy that I scolded her.

"Hey miss! We're falling in line here. Could you talk to him while working? Or better yet work first, flirt later!" I didn't mind talking like that because I was super hungry and the waffle was the only thing I could afford back then.

The woman scowled at me, and when she looked back at the guy, her eyes shone like the stars in the sky. And then she gave him two waffles. What the! But I decided to forget about it because I have now my waffle.

When I walked out from the line I bumped into a huge chest. "Oof!"

A warm, gentle hand held me by the shoulders to keep me in balance. "Are you okay?"

I nodded and when I looked up, I saw the same guy from the stall earlier.

He took out his hand and said, "I'm Ethan. You are?"

And that's when I started knowing him, until we found ourselves in the same circle of friends.

Looking now, the Waffles Station is still jam-packed with people. There is still a long line of customers just like before. I guess they still haven't lost their touch. They even added another stall to accommodate more.

I turned to Ethan which to my dismay has long been gone from my side. I turned 360° to look for him. I craned forward to look for him properly, since I'm so small. And there he was, ditching the line to talk to the waffle vendor.

I smiled. Clearly, he didn't change at all.

I waited at the back, arms crossed in front of me, a playful smirk dancing on my face. When Ethan walked towards me, holding two waffles, I barked a laugh.

"What are you laughing about?" Ethan asked as he gave me a waffle while biting the other waffle.

I took the waffle and replied, "You did the same thing before, skipped the line, flirted the vendor then bought two waffles. Tell me, the other waffle was given to your chick that time?"

He almost choked on his waffle. I laughed. "So guilty Ethan."

He chewed his food quickly and then raised his hand and his index finger shot up. "First of all, I did not flirt with the vendor. I just talked to her because we were friends." I rolled my eyes at that. Are you still in denial of yourself Ethan?

"Second," he continued as his middle finger shot up. "I did not give the other waffle to a chick or to anyone. That was for myself. I need two waffles. And last," his middle finger shot up, "I didn't skip the line."

I raised my brow at him. "Really Ethan?"

He took another bite of his waffle and wagged his brows up and down.

"No. There were only two points given. You skipped the line."

He raised his arm in surrender. "Okay fine. I skipped, because I still have a class after that."

I giggled. "So, where are you going now?"

He thought for a bit. "Well, I guess I'd stay in your apartment for a little while. I'm bound to be back in Japan for a couple of days."

"Aren't you going to visit your parents?"

"Naaah. They didn't even know I went back here."

"Such an unfilial son."

"They're not good parents either."

I sighed. "I wish they would be better."

"I don't know Cass. If they will, I guess it would take much time."

"But you're a doctor now, which your mother so dearly wished for you to become. Why would they still treat you like that?"

"Cassidy, it's been worse. Now that I earn, they always ask me for things and that. I mean it's okay for me to give them something from the goodness of my heart. But to request for everything, from their travel expenses to expensive brands of clothes and shoes and bags, well that is wishing for too much."

"Well, I can't say that I feel you because I don't have parents anymore. But you could always voice your opinions to them."

"Well, they won't ever listen to me."

"Did you try sharing about that particular bit?"

"Not yet. But I don't want to feel disappointed."

"Yeah. I guess I'd be afraid of that too. Well, I feel that someday you'd reach that limit and you might blurt it out to them. I'm willing to wait for that moment."

"And that moment will happen when I call you in the middle of the night looking for a place to stay."

I laughed. "And my home will always welcome you."

And I didn't know when and how, but I found my face only inches away from him, our breaths mixing. Our breaths turned ragged and my heart beat so fast. Our waffles forgotten. Instinctively, I placed my hand on Ethan's chest and I felt his heart beat fast too.

What is this charged air? Why can't I move away? I raised my eyes to look at his. But that was the worst move of all. Because I found myself immobilized in his gazes. I can't think straight, I only see Ethan. It was as if I was hypnotized.

"Cassidy." I heard Ethan say my name softly, gently, warmly.

He inched closer, our noses barely touching.

"Ethan, I..."

Our lips almost touched when we heard our names being called.

"Oy! Ethan! Cassidy."

Ash. I hastily pushed Ethan away and breathed deeply. I schooled my face into one who was happy to see a friend.

"Ash!" I waved at him while he was making his way towards us. I looked back at Ethan. He was disappointed, I could see, but he still managed to compose a smile on his face. I smiled in gratitude at him. He smiled back.

I turned back at Ash who was some meters away from us, holding two ice cream cones, and a Gina in tow.
