Chapter 2

Part 4

Translation: Yamaking

“Since we’ve both decided to take on a part-time job, we might as well both do our best right?”

As I said that while we were walking back from school, Ako held a somewhat troubled look on her face as she put a finger towards her mouth.

“Now that I calmly think about it, doing something like work is just unbelievable isn’t it?”

“It’s only for a single day so I figured we could just tough it out.”

But since we only went along with this because of Segawa, we still had the option of backing out now.

“Hmm, although, do you not want to go ahead with it? There’s still time left to back out you know?”

“Uuu… But I feel bad about just letting Schew-chan do it alone…”

“It’s her own problem after all, so I don’t think you have to force yourself, Ako.”

However, I want Ako to treasure this feeling of comradery a bit more.

We may not be able to work hard for our own sakes, but being able to do so for the sake of our friends is quite the nice idea, don’t you think?

“It’s light work that doesn’t involve talking to people that much right? I think that suits you just fine.”

I tried following up on what I just said there, but Ako suddenly got engulfed in a dark aura.

“Not talking to people is simply not enough! It would be better if it was a job where no one could see my face… like… I could wear the costume of a mysterious promotional mascot character named ‘Akosshi’ and do work like that maybe?”

“Just what will you be promoting then? Are you going to be the promotional mascot for a net game?”

“Akosshi—!”

Please stop saying that out loud. I’m going to start thinking it’s cute after all.

TL note: This is a reference to the mascot character, Funassyi which was quite popular at the time this was published. Also, the way she named herself makes it a pun that may mean ‘someone who derails from the main topic’.

“Yes, yes, your head is full of mascot characters. That’s enough of that.”

“Just what do you mean by that?!”

“I said, that’s enough of that.”

I forcibly put an end to that topic.

“Well, there’s no real responsibility that comes with getting into a part-time job. It’s only work for a single day after all. If you’re curious about it, then why not give it a try? This is especially true now, since we need the money anyway.”

“I guess so. We need money after all right?”

Ako nodded to herself.

It’s already gotten bad enough that our reduced budget is making us go without lunch everyday. This situation is perfect for the state of emergency we have right now.

“And well you see, there have been cases where net game junkies turn into part-time job junkies once they realize the situation they’re in.”

“Oh, does that happen?”

Yes it does, as surprising as that may sound.

“And the reason for that you see, is the huge disparity between the value of real money and in-game gold.”

“But you can’t just exchange real money for in-game gold right?”

Ako completely turned her body to face towards me while we were walking. Come on now, face forward and walk properly. You’re going to trip like that you know?

“Fundamentally, that’s true. But, in the same manner that you can perform legal RMT to get in-game gold in LA, there are also games that have substantially viable methods of buying in-game currency with real money as well.”

Even if there wasn’t any form of legal RMT, there are still plenty of groups that practice it illegally. But let’s set aside those people for now.

“And with all that settled, the problem now is going to be your hourly wage. So Ako, when you go farm Sleeper-sensei— ah, I mean when you solo farm there, how much do you get per hour?”

“I think it takes me about an hour to get at least 3M.”

“Ooh, that’s pretty good.”

But! However!

Do you honestly believe that that yield is really high enough? Go on and give it a thought.

“But when you go and do a real part-time job for an hour… Well, let’s say you worked really hard, so you get 1000 yen as your hourly wage.”

“Can you really get that much from just a normal part-time job?”

“If you work really hard Ako, then you may just be able to get that much. Well, it’s easier to compute it with 1000 yen that’s why I set it like that.”

You may just turn into an invaluable poster girl if you can just do your job energetically and act sociably after all. Though I feel like Ako won’t be herself anymore if she becomes that.

“And with that 1000 yen hourly wage, if you work for five hours as soon as school ends, then you’ll get 5000 yen. You’ll have enough to buy one of LA’s official package deals.”

“It looks that way I guess?”

“Then, when you sell those special items in-game, you’ll be able to get around 100M for them.”

“…That means…”

It seems Ako has finally realized it. That is, the meaning behind using these calculations of hourly gains.

“That’s right. If you convert that into your hourly gains in the game, it would be equal to 20M per hour. That’s not an easy amount to farm up even for hardcore players you know? This is really quite amazing—”

“That’s… how do I say this, uhm… that’s very shocking even for a sample right?!”

“It equates seven hours of nightmares hunting down Sleeper-sensei to a spending one hour at a part-time job after all.”

I suppose it’s only human nature to be shaken up after being told that those excruciatingly long hours you spent on it simply amounts to doing your best at a part-time job for an hour.

“Uuu… I’m still somehow not convinced by all of this. They still haunt me in my dreams you know?”

“I understand completely how you feel, but reality is simply too cruel. This is why there are mid-tier net game addicts, who’ve leveled as much as they can yet can’t really find fun in what they just did, come to the realization that it’s simpler to just go out and work for it.”

“And then they turn into part-time job junkies… right?”

‘I understand now’, Ako murmured as she deeply nodded to that realization.

“Though there may be a lot of people who yell out stuff like ‘Legal RMT is heresy!’ or ‘The game is fun because you play it, not because you spend money on it!’, the truth of the matter is that there are functioning members of society that choose to buy progression.”

I’m not saying that either side is correct. After all, making a game too grindy that players would come to hate it is putting the cart before the horse.

“There was a period of time when I also thought to myself that ‘I’ll get a part-time job when I get into high school!’ you see…”

“But why didn’t you do it then?”

“Because if I went and got something like a part-time job, then my gaming time would decrease no?”

“You’re really contradicting yourself you know?!”

It’s not like I’m playing to to farm up a huge amount of in-game gold.

Enjoying the game is the most important thing. Anything after that is just a bonus.

“And since we’re especially in need of money right now, I thought to myself, ‘Why not?’.”

“I see, I see… I understand now.”

Ako firmly nodded and without a moment’s delay, pranced right in front of me.

“As Rusian’s wife, I will do my best to earn the deposit for a splendid home!”

Ako looked really enthusiastic as she said that.

I’m happy that you feel that way, but—

“I guess I don’t really want you to do that after all…”

“Why not?!”

Wouldn’t that make me a complete gigolo then?

Even I think that being financially supported by Ako is too pathetic that I simply can’t stand it.

Well then, I suppose I’ll just have to do my best at tomorrow’s job.
