Chapter 3

Before & After

TL note: Reference to the Japanese Home Renovation Show named Makeover! Dramatic Before & After in English. The show is pretty much documentaries about home and garden renovations.

Part 1

Translation: Yamaking

A sandy white beach and the wide ocean as far as the eye can see.

Off in the horizon, you could see the vermilion sunset.

A relaxing yet pleasant BGM.

In the background, you could also see the ebb and flow of the tide taking part in this wonderful spectacle.

If you were stranded here with a member of the opposite sex, you would certainly fall in love. That’s how the atmosphere of the area felt like.

“Do you remember this place, Rusian?”

“Well of course I do.”

Ako asked me that, as if she was whispering in my ear. To that, I gave a wry smile as I responded.

“This is where you proposed to me after all.”

“That’s right. It’s a place that brings back memories of when you kept rejecting my proposals.”

“It’s this memorable coast where you kept pushing on even though I already rejected you.”

We both made remarks to keep the other person in check, as if to say ‘You were the one at fault you know’.

Though if you ask my opinion on who was the real the victim here, I’d say Ako wins this case by a slim margin.

“It’s like a dream. Being able to make a world for just the two of us in a place where I confessed my feelings to Rusian, and then living here by ourselves forever and ever…”

“It’s not a world we’re making but… Yeah, you can consider it a space for just the two of us.”

As I slowly moused over the land, the words ‘For Sale’ were there. We can definitely put up our house here.

“It’s so far away from the city that it’s inconvenient and the location is inconspicuous to other people. Are you fine with that?”

“That’s exactly why I picked it. A place for just me and Rusian. A house for just the two of us. That’s all that matters.”

“…I got it.”

In response to her smiling face that looks as if it had melted, I couldn’t do anything else but agree.

And so, there you have it.

“This is where we’re gonna build our house.”

“Shaddup! I’m still stuck at login so I can’t see it yet!”

“It may be the first day of the Housing Update, but I certainly did not expect to participate in a login game on the evening of a weekday!”

While they were listening to the two of us talk, Master and Schwein were still stuck at the login server, trying to get in.

The login game that we haven’t experienced for a while is currently in progress for both of them.

You both let up on mashing the login button just because we won’t be able to get the house we planned on buying and this is what it got you.

“Hey, hey, if you just wait a little longer then you can log in normally right? Why are you in such a hurry?”

Akiyama-san just doesn’t understand the feeling of those two who kept inputting their ID and password repeatedly.

That’s just how the login game goes, you know.

And they’re both having fun while doing that anyway, so it’s fine.

“So? Where specifically is that coast you’re talking about?”

“It’s Renterai Coast! The music is nice, and it’s a really beautiful place! The view of the sun setting into the sea is especially so romantic that it’s simply the best!”

TL note: I sadly have no idea what beach/area they are referencing here. If you happen to know which one it is, please do tell me. My guess is that it’s Jawaii from Ragnarok Online due to the white sandy beach and stuff, but I could be wrong.

“It takes 30 minutes to get to there from the capital you know… But well, this is your house anyway, so do as you please.”

“Yes, I will!”

The lands for sale in the capital, Lodestone, is just so expensive that both our funds simply won’t cut it.

Which is why we had no choice but to go and look for cheaper land that’s farther from town. However, Ako seems to like this idea better than putting up a house inside the city. I suppose this in itself is also nice.

“Ako and Rusian both got 500M just by themselves, so if only me and Master were able to save something up then we should’ve been able to get 1B easy…”

“It’s disappointing no matter how many times I think about it…”

You two don’t have to be so down about it. Let’s just go save up and buy a guild house some other time, all right?

“Well then Ako, should we go buy this land?”

“Yes!”

The area around the new Land Manager NPC that appeared in the capital is currently being flooded by players.

As more and more chosen ones slip past the login game, more and more people gather near the said NPC.

“Alright Ako, I’ll hand over the gold to you so you can go buy it.”

“…Is this really okay?”

“It’s fine. You’ll always be there waiting for me after all, right?”

If that’s the case, then Ako should have ownership of the house. She’s going to be the one using it the most after all.

“Then… I’m going to buy  it!”

With a click, Ako pressed the button.

After a brief moment, the ownership of the land was decided.

“All right. The purchase was done without any problems.”

“It’s the first step to making our love nest right!”

“It seems we still need to discuss how we’re going to name that house.”

Just give it a more proper name than that, alright?

“Aaaah! I wanted to see how that system worked too! But I just couldn’t log in at all!”

“It seems they’re postponing the logins for the useless members as well… Fufufu…”

We only got in by chance! You don’t have to say it like that!

“Ah, I just logged in too! It looks like the lands near the tavern still haven’t been sold yet.”

“What a shame…”

“It’s not like we can afford to buy it anyway. It’s fine.”

The login for the servers stabilized after waiting for a while.

Since we’ve finally got everyone together, we began preparing for the construction of the building.

“It says here that once we buy the construction materials and ferry them over to the site, we can begin building the house.”

“The question is, how much do those construction materials cost right now?”

It looks like you can buy them from one of the Housing NPCs. With that in mind, I took a look the Construction Materials Section.

Err… Uwah, what the heck is this?

“The heck is this? It’s not just gold, but it looks like you need other items as well.”

“And what’s more, aren’t these miscellaneous drops that you just sell to the NPC? Aren’t these just vendor trash?”

“That’s really unnecessary consideration coming from the management…”

‘We’re going to give these vendor trash some use~☆’ is the change they made that nobody asked for.

If it were rares, then we probably would’ve stored some of it, but there’s simply no way we’re hoarding trash drops!

Everyone would just be annoyed even if you do this shit!

At least add in some new items and just use those!

“The Wooden House seems like the simplest one to make but… You need 3000 Willow’s Small Branch and 2000 of Elder’s Resin for that… that’s just way too much.”

TL note: This is a reference to Ragnarok Online’s Willow and Elder Willow enemies which are living trees.

“So we still can’t build a house even after coming this far huh?”

“But we need those right? Then should we go and farm those up right now?”

Sette-san was being positive about this. That’s a good attitude to have, but I’ve already obtained information on other problems we’re going to face related to that.

“This is what’s written on the general: ‘The required items for the new Housing Update are so expensive right now that the maps which spawn the monsters who have these drops are packed with so much people’.”

“Of course that happens…”

Right as we speak, the market is being flooded with listings of such items that were considered to be trash before. That event is what continued to mutate the current atmosphere in town.

The usual festive mood you’d see after a huge update like this is now turning into complete chaos.

“It’s like that time when you needed a mystery item for a certain event.”

“It looks like the trade chat is being flooded as well.”

The market is just going nuts at this point. There are just a whole lot more B> chats than S> chats at this point.

“Whatever shall we do? We won’t be able to build a house at this rate.”

“We won’t be able to participate in the contest then!”

At this point, I don’t even know what we even bought the land for.

This is quite the problem. Though, as I was thinking that…

“Uhm, uhm!”

Ako, who was intently looking at the required materials list, suddenly called out to us.

“If it’s this Marble House at the most bottom part of the list, then I think we can make it.”

“…How?”

“Eh? We can? You’re kidding right?”

Why are you saying that? Isn’t that the most expensive one there is?

No matter how much Ako had saved up, she couldn’t possibly buy up the expensive materials needed for that.

“I mean, see… It says here that the required materials are Earthen Crystal and Earth Elementals you know?”

“Woah, are you serious?”

More than half of the materials needed for it all drop from Sleeper-sensei.

Though I’m sure right now, the map where Sleeper-sensei spawns is filled to the brim like never before.

“But even so, you’d still need quite the hefty amount. Do you still have many of those drops left?”

“I haven’t sold a single one of them so I have plenty of them, you know?”

“So you kept picking up those trash loots all this time and didn’t even bother to sell them?”

“It’s my principle to pick up anything that drops and not sell them at all you know?”

TL note: If you already forgot, Rusian said before that Sleeper-sensei drops Earthen Crystals (which I believe is a reference to Great Nature in Ragnarok Online) and some other stuff sold by the Earth Elemental NPC. Also, you now know that Ako has a severe case of being a packrat.

I even told you back then that you didn’t need to pick them up. What a huge waste of effort.

It may have been a waste but… This is great!

“That’s amazing Ako-chan!”

“I, is it really that amazing? Did I do a good job?”

“It sure doesn’t happen often, but you really come through during an important occasion like this… You did a really good job saving up all those materials.”

This is truly a fine play by Ako. She pretty much has most of the materials already.

The required materials also need some rare items, but to be completely honest, that’s the easier part. We store rare items instead of selling them after all.

“Let’s build this Marble House then!”

“Wait, wait.”

Ako stopped moving her hands in reaction to my voice.

“I’ve said this earlier, but the items that were turned into building materials have suddenly raised in price.”

“But I have all of them though?”

That’s right. You have them all gathered up. You have a truck load of them. You’re amazing Ako. That was without a doubt, outstanding work.

And that’s exactly why other options have opened up for us.

“If you sell all of those materials, you’ll be able to buy land in a much better location. You could build a house in a place that’s much more accessible from the capital.”

“That’s…”

Ako stared at her screen and tilted her head in deep thought.

“But if I sell all the materials for that, then that means we won’t be able to build our house right?”

“That’s how it would go.”

We’ll be using up all the materials that she painstakingly gathered up these past two weeks.

If you take the currently crowded Sleeper-sensei map into consideration, it would take a month, twice as long as before, to gather all that up again.

“I just don’t like that idea after all. Let’s go build our house for the two of us!”

“…Are you all okay with that, everyone?”

I tried asking the opinion of everyone else in the room.

“It’s yours and Ako’s gold isn’t it? Do whatever you want.”

“Whimpering loser dogs shouldn’t have any say in this.”

“If we’re going to build one, then it might as well be pretty right—”

Master is too bummed out about this.

But if that’s what they’re going to say, then…

“Well then, let’s go build it!”

“Yes! I’ll go buy it now okay!”

The construction materials were bought without a hitch.

A huge donkey carrying all the materials on its back suddenly spawned, drawing everyone’s attention to it.

There was barely anyone buying materials for the Marble Housing so of course it stood out.

“We still have to ferry over these mats to the other end of the world though.”

“Let’s carefully ferry it over together~!”

The NPC who was leading the donkey was in auto-follow mode so we couldn’t use normal methods of transportation like the Gate or Warp Portal.

And on top of that, this donkey is slow. At this point, it would take about an hour for us to reach the construction site.

Walking while in an Overburdened state, which caused movement speed to drop, we headed towards Renterai Coast.

TL note: The housing system in LA seems to be copied off of ArcheAge at this point. It had the same concept of getting construction materials at some station and then ferrying it over to the actual plot of land. The designs, direction of which it’s facing, ability to put tools inside, housing not being instanced are all part of ArcheAge too.

“This kind of event isn’t that bad from time to time.”

“This has to be my first time ever walking across the map ever since I started playing this game—”

“You really should go on adventures more often Nanako. This kind of thing is fun in its own right too.”

As we led the donkey, the three of them trailed behind us.

This was the exact opposite compared to our recent days of torturous grind that time idly passed by.

We got rid of the few monsters that also attempted to attack us and safely made it to our destination.

“Now all we need is to build it right here right!”

“Make sure you don’t mess up the design and the direction it’s facing all right?”

“Yes! I’ve checked it multiple times! Then… Here I go!”

Once Ako clicked on her mouse button, the materials spawned right in front of us and the house then began assembling by itself.

All that’s left is to wait for this automatic sequence and then the Marble House should be finished.

“Which house design did you pick? There were a lot of types to choose from right?”

“Well of course it had to be… that, right?”

I shifted my gaze towards Ako, urging her to be the one to tell them.

“It might be a bit cramped, but I picked the house that had four rooms.”

“Do you really need four rooms in the house?”

The puzzled Master asked that. In response, Ako puffed out her chest, looking quite proud of herself as she said,

“There’s me and Rusian’s room, Master’s room, Schew-chan’s room, and Sette-san’s room. That means we need four rooms in total right~?”

A smug smile covering her whole face was the expression that my wife had on.

Seeing that completely satisfied look on her face really made me feel that everything we did up to today was well worth it.

It seems that building a house takes almost a whole day to finish.

If you think about it in the game’s standards, this is quite the long wait. However, comparing to how it actually goes in real life, this is actually considerably fast.

And what’s more, seeing the materials automatically build itself into a house as time passed was quite amusing to watch that our club activities ended just by doing that.

When I got back home, I had some dinner and hurriedly logged back on to LA.

I wanted to see the progress on the building of the house, but there was something else I was more interested in seeing.

Rusian: Come on now Ako, it’s this way.

Ako: Is there something happening here in the middle of the city?

As I dragged the puzzled Ako along, we arrived in front of a residential lot in the capital.

Up until now, it was simply a flat piece of land everywhere, but I imagine that it has transformed into completely something else by now. And my expectations did not fail to disappoint me.

Ako: Amazing… There’s so much…

Rusian: It’s a magnificent view, isn’t it?

Right here, you could see a lot of houses being built at the same time. You could see pillars and floors floating around in midair that it just really gives off that whole fantasy vibe. Well, it is a fantasy game after all.

In front of the houses, you could see the owners and their friends taking screenshots and recording videos. You could also see vendor shops lined up, selling all sorts of construction materials. Celebratory fireworks are also going off here and there. It’s truly a festive spectacle.

Most of the houses here would be finished with construction by tomorrow, so you can really only experience this kind of event now.

Ako: …Seeing everyone enjoy this together looks really nice but…

Ako said that to me and she stood there, dazzled by everything that was unfolding in front of her.

Ako: Having a secret place with only your most treasured people is a much more wonderful thing, right?

Rusian: I guess so. We don’t have neighbors or any of the sort after all.

Ako: It would be easier like that so I’m fine with it.

You really don’t have to show off your lack of communication skills in situations like this, you know?

Rusian: I really wanted to show this to Schwein and Master as well though…

Ako: But the two of them aren’t here…

Segawa still has her broken PC after all.

And Master seems to be bummed out that someone from the group is still missing.

Just by simply not having her here, the group is all out of whack. We’re always hanging out with the four of us together after all, so I guess that’s the main reason.

Ako: It would be nice if she gets a new PC soon.

Rusian: But in order to do that, she has to work part-time which would make her unable to come to the club right…

Ako: I… don’t really want that…

What a quandary. What would be the best course of action for this, I wonder?

It would be all fine if she could have a PC build itself out of thin air like this too.

As I spaced out, staring at the houses building themselves, suddenly,

Nekohime: Wait a meownite! Don’t meow think this is a bit too meowch?!

A chat like that came flying out.

Rusian: …

Ako: ……

Nekohime: The original plan was an Meow-sized house in the third-rate district! This is an L-sized house in the second-rate district you meow?! And no matter how meow look at it, this looks like a castle doesn’t it?!

She said all those things while being carried on a huge palanquin. The person that was being carried over to the site of the castle in progress was someone I was really familiar with.

Me and Ako silently saw her off.

Rusian: …Is she going to be the one sitting on the throne?

Ako: She probably is…

I wonder what’s in store for future of the Queen, Holy Angel Nekohime-sama, founder of Nekohime-ism.

Yeah, it’s not like I care really, but please do your best.
