"Uncle Ye, as one of the family heads, do you deem what I said incorrect?" Duan Tianrao had finally revealed his true character. He had long since known from Ye Xun that the Great Elder was the one currently holding the reigns in the Ye household and Ye Ling was nothing but a family head in name only.
"You…." Ye Ling trembled with rage.
As Ye Xun witnessed this scene unfold before her, a subtle smirk played across her lips, which she rubbed out in an instant before putting on a face full of concern:
"Father, please calm down."
"Calm down? How do you expect me to calm down from this?" Ye Ling retorted.
Ye Xun laid her eyes for a moment, on her tall and charming Duan Tianrao before saying: "Mr. Duan has his own concerns, as the heir to the head of the Duan household it is his duty to uphold his family's dignity above all else. Please kindly understand, father. Tang Tang is still young, she is certain to find another suitor in the years to come."
"What did you say?" Ye Ling was baffled as he stared in disbelief, at his adopted daughter who he raised from her youth. It was hard to imagine that at a time like this, Ye Xun would choose to support Duan Tianrao instead.
Ye Xun turned her sight from the furious Ye Ling to the ever silent Ye Qingtang, whilst placing before her, the Vital Essence which Duan Tianrao had gifted her.
"Tang Tang, Mr. Duan still has your best interest at heart, you can tell from all the trouble he went through, just to find this Vital Essence for your sake." A cold glimmer could be seen from Ye Xun's eyes while she spoke.
To her knowledge, she was certain that Ye Qingtang was infatuated with Duan Tianrao. There was no way she would accept the gift as an exchange to her agreement in breaking the engagement. In fact, she would more likely plead desperately for Duan Tianrao to change his mind.
Therefore, this Vital Essence would still be hers in the end.
While harboring such thoughts, Ye Xun remained in her gentle and encouraging demeanor.
Ye Qingtang watched her façade with cold eyes and a condescending sneer in her heart.
She could read her like an open book now. However, in the past, she behaved as Ye Xun anticipated. Upon knowing Duan Tianrao's intention of calling off the engagement, not only did she rejected all the gifts from him, she also pleaded desperately, to the extent of forsaking her dignity, just to remain at Duan Tianrao's side.
Without any consideration, her groveling put the Ye household to shame, including Ye Ling, who vomited blood in a fit of rage.
But now, things are different….
Ye Qingtang played a smile on her lips, and while Ye Xun was indulging in her own confidence, she picked up the bottle of Vital Essence with her hand.
"In that case, thank you, Mr. Duan, for your kind consideration." With that being said, she stuffed the bottle into her dimension ring.
The entire process transpired at the drop of a hat.
And while Ye Ling was still blinded by rage, Ye Qingtang suddenly commented:
"Father, I agree with Mr. Duan's sentiment."
The three who were present became stunned at Ye Qingtang's sudden declaration.
Duan Tianrao widened his eyes in surprise. Initially, he had assumed that Ye Qingtang was certain to whine and cry at his intention to call off the engagement, never would he expect such a reaction from her.
Ye Ling was shocked as well. He looked at his daughter with eyes full of worries, fearing that she had become deranged due to devastation.
"Tang Tang…. What are you talking about?"
Ye Qingtang, while remaining seated, looked at the dumbfounded trio before speaking calmly: "As a lady, I understand how awkward it is when her engagement is called off, but since Mr. Duan is already the heir to the head of the Duan household, it is only natural for him to prioritize his family's standing, and besides, I am indeed not suitable for the position of a First Lady."
