Chapter 243        Verification

Ronghua Medical University became a college just a few years ago. Before it was a college, it was just a private high school. The school was strenuously trying to improve its popularity. However, its foundation was not strong, and its lecturers and professors were not good enough. At the moment, the university was already at its best and it would be really difficult to improve any further.

The headmaster of the school, Ou Yangcheng, was very ambitious. He was trying to get the school to advance from the municipal level to the provincial level. Unfortunately, Tianyang city’s economy had been terrible for the past few years, and the funding from the government was not enough at all. The only thing they could be proud of was the biological laboratory that they co-built with Hopkins Medical Center from the United States. And because of that, they were able to recruit new students.

There were tons of dissertations that were published by the biological laboratory. The best dissertations were, of course, published internationally. The second best would be published domestically, the next would be published provincially, and next….., there were not any professional biology or medical publications in the city. Thus, they would be published in the school journal.

Usually, the school journal was just for showing the students’ faces. Due to the fact that the dissertations posted on it were basically worthless, the school journal was only published once every three months. There were only around one hundred copies each time and they could not even get rid of them all because no one wanted to read them!

There was once a dissertation with the title, ‘Different Ways of Killing Lab Mice’. Who would read that kind of stuff?

Headmaster Ou Yangcheng was extremely angry about that. Because of that incident, he decided to be the editor of the school journal and he strictly controlled the quality of the published dissertations. As a result, the school journal was forced to stop for two seasons because the quantities were not sufficient. Those who wrote the dissertations were not dumb. Even if there were good ones, they were not going to publish them in the school journal!

“Sir, someone submitted a thesis!” The principal’s assistant came in happily while holding a small envelope, “Thank goodness, we finally have enough dissertations for this season.”

“Don’t bother showing me if it’s the ‘Influence of Pepper on the Taste of Roasted Pigeons’.” Ou Yangcheng was annoyed overall because of the encouragement everyone received at the university to participate — they ended up receiving bullsh*t and nonsense from the students.

Someone submitted a dissertation titled, ‘The Relationship Between the Angle of Feces Entering the Pit and the Splash of Water’. Ou Yangcheng was outraged when he saw the title.

“No, it’s not.” Ever since the ‘sh*t’ dissertation, the assistant would actually spend some time reviewing the dissertations to make sure that it would not happen again. “This title looks pretty cool.”

“Oh, let me have a look.” Ou Yangcheng put on his spectacles. He was satisfied with the title: “Genetically modified enzymes? Hmm… interesting. Very scientific.”

The dissertation was only around two thousand words, and it only took him a few minutes to read it. Basically, it was the application of a new technology. However… was that dissertation reliable? Ou Yangcheng was not sure! He was a headmaster, not a scientist.

He looked at the submitter, Xu Guoqiang. The correspondence author and first author were also him. The nominal was ‘Xu Guoqiang’s biochemical lab’.

Ou Yangcheng was familiar with Professor Xu Guoqiang. He was the most unreliable person in the entire university. In terms of academics, Xu Guoqiang was actually not that bad, but in terms of relationships with other people, he was the worst.

Once, he injected himself because he did not have enough money to buy an experimental chimpanzee. As a result, he stayed in the hospital for six months. Not to mention the costs paid by the university, he was nearly killed and that was the reason for his divorce.

“Pathetic, so pathetic! A professor submitted a dissertation to the school journal.” Ou Yangcheng actually felt bad for him, “Oh well, let’s do it. It’s just a school journal, a dissertation from a professor will definitely make our journal look nicer.”

The dissertations on school journals were generally written by students or normal lecturers — an associate professor was indeed eye-catching. Due to the sympathy between the weak, a lot of people knew of Xu Guoqiang. Originally, they could not even get rid of the hundred journal copies. But this time, it was a hit. Everyone wanted to see how this associate professor was struggling.

However, the majority of the people could not understand the dissertation. There were not a lot of people that understood the topic, not to mention the number of people who were actually interested. Despite that, somebody did recognize Xu Guoqiang.

“Isn’t this dissertation talking about the new application? Go ahead and verify it.” Howard remembered Xu Guoqiang. As a professor at Hopkins Medical Center, he had a very good memory. He was embarrassed by Xu Guoqiang once and he would remember that for the rest of his life.

Howard could not wait to prove him wrong when he saw the dissertation posted by Xu Guoqiang. He immediately requested his researcher to verify the reliability of the dissertation.

It was just a quick order. After that, Howard did not even bother about it. For Howard, Xu Guoqiang was just a loser that was not worth paying attention to.

Meanwhile, after the verification, the researcher thought that the topic of ‘genetically modified enzymes’ was actually pretty interesting. Thus, he used the dissertation as a reference for his own thesis. It was considered to be at the second stage of research and development. The researcher then submitted the thesis to the provincial journal.

Of course, there were more readers for the provincial journal. A lot of people were very interested in the conclusion of the research. Thus, the research went on and on, and finally, it was published domestically.

After that, more people started their own research. All of a sudden, ‘genetically modified’ became hot again after the topic of ‘genetically modified’ food. There were a lot of researchers that expanded on the fundamental idea and verified the accuracy of the original dissertation from the school journal.

For a dissertation, its value increased with the depth of research and the frequency of being referenced. However, it would take a very long time for a proper publisher to publish an article. A large number of verifications and modifications were required. However, before an article could be published, the electronic version would be spread through the internet. It was more convenient and efficient for researchers and people in the internal forum.

Even though it was an informal method, it was a very important way to receive the latest information. Around two weeks after the school journal was published, the information about the ‘New Application of Genetically Modified Enzymes’ was slowly expanding. Although not a lot of people knew about it, it had become fairly prominent.

Professor Howard received an international call in the middle of the night. A well-known professor from Hopkins Medical Center in the United States called and asked hurriedly, “Howard, you’re at the university called ‘Ronghua Medical University’ in China, right?”

Howard looked at the time; it was 2 AM in the morning. He got up from the bed and said with an annoyed voice, “Yes, I’ve already been in this stupid place for two years. When will I be transferring back? I’ve had enough of….”

While Howard was complaining, a rushed voice rose from the other side of the phone, “Is there a biology professor named Xu Guoqiang there?”

“Hmm…., yeah, I know him.” Howard nearly forgot about Xu Guoqiang. When he was going to complain about Xu Guoqiang, a cheering voice rose from the other side, “Please send my congratulations to that professor, I’m so glad to have read his article and verified his hypothesis. It was an amazing research, really terrific!”

Howard instantly awakened from sleepiness and was dumbfounded!

An amazing research? What the hell is that?
