"I teach as fast as you are capable of learning" The man had questioned James with one sentence showing his intelligence, he didn't believe James could learn both in one lesson.
"Hello, I am James Reel. do you mind if I ask your name?" James stretched his hand out to shake the mans' but upon doing so received a funny look from him. Handshakes were not a thing in this world, so James merely played it off like he was stretching and took the seat next to the man.
"My name is Joshua, may I ask what area of the city you are from?" The man looked at James with an approving gaze and was apparently happy at his proper introduction.
"I don't really have a permanent residence at the moment I am currently staying in one of the inns on the main street."
The man gave James a quizzical expression but apparently decided to ignore whatever thoughts he was having and get on with the lesson.
"Alright this is the basic alphabet, and each letter sounds as such." The man Joshua then spent the next few hours teaching James and began to realise the genuinely perverse talent this young man had for learning. His power of understanding was incredible, beyond anything he had ever seen. It took James 3 hours to be able to read and write the language of this new world showing just how exceptional his learning abilities are.
"Boy, you have to be one of the best talents I have seen in my 40 years of teaching. I want to recommend you to one of the inner district schools, but without a certain status you would never be accepted; regardless of my input. If you can find some way to increase your status in the city, then I will happily recommend you to the top school in the city. In the meantime I can give you some small privileges in the outer district such as free access to all the books in the library except for the restricted section, but you can pay a reduced rate for that at 90% the normal cost." Joshua looked at James with approval like he was a prized treasure.
"Thank you, mister, I truly appreciate it!" James gave the man a thankful look paid for his lesson and left. After he walked out the back room he went straight to a chair but didn't start reading yet first, he wanted to form a plan on increasing his status in the city.
'In these primitive times, masters of their craft were granted quite a high status if I remember correctly. Seeing as the system is titled Underworld Engineering, I can assume that's a path that makes the most sense to travel. So the first thing I need to do is find somewhere I can apprentice or the like and show them my knowledge of engineering and physics from my past life; assuming the same laws of physics are followed in this world than the last.'

Alright, that clears up enough, I suppose I should find out what level this worlds knowledge is at.
For the next hour, James could be seen wandering back and forth carrying book after book to his table and flipping page after page. The fast reader perk was genuinely marvellous.
During the time James was reading the man from earlier who left with his evidence came back with a guard, and the clerk was only charged 100 Leones which compared to the amount he had probably stolen from people was indeed nothing, like a drop in the ocean of his wealth. But at least someone with such an obsession with money would feel some pain at being fined so there was every chance he wouldn't be so overboard with his price increases in the future.
James had now chewed his way through most of the books on engineering he could find although there weren't many, so he had to spill over into other subjects such as blacksmithing and carpentry to see what innovations had been made in that field. It was after reading all of these that an inkling of a plan began to form in his head.
