The smile in Tazuna's face slowly disappeared, the same goes for Arisa. The usual Kaoru that they got used to was clearly very much different right now. It was a week after he received the parchment and letters.
He came in this morning with the usual smile and Arisa assumed that it was for her, even Tazuna felt the same as he welcomed Kaoru. But to their surprise he placed the parchment that was signed by the remaining Hesperian people in Tazuna's table.
"I'm taking up this challenge," he said seriously after putting it down.
"K-Kaoru, what's going on? Wh- Where did you get this?" Arisa asked stuttering.
If Kaoru used this to ascend the throne then that means, he was not planning to ascend the throne with her.
"*sneers* I'm shock. That you actually fall for all my acting. Do you really think I would fall for someone like you? Someone who's throwing herself right in my doorstep?" Kaoru said coldly.
Arisa couldn't help but to have a step back. She didn't know this person, he was very very different from the kind person who was taking care of her as they both look around the kingdom.
"Watch your mouth, Arisa is my daughter. Do you think that you can just take up this challenge just because you want to? There are other prerequisite for that," Tazuna tried to make his voice firm, doing his best to hide his shock.
He was thinking the same way as Arisa, he would become the father of the king.
Once again, Kaoru gave a cold sneer, "Prerequisite? I say, your acting is quite good as well. Still acting up to this point that you don't know who I am? I think you already know though, from the moment I came here."
Tazuna just stare at him, without replying or saying anything.
"Do you think I didn't know? That the usual visitors of this kingdom after the war was just asked for some identification and all. But somehow I became special, for the chief to actually come out? Obviously you had the guards memorize, each royalty of the three kingdoms."
Despite trying to act tough, Tazuna's eyes still wavered upon hearing Kaoru's explanation.
"I am not as stupid as you think after all. Weeks after coming here I actually chanced upon the daughter of the chief, who fainted close to where we live? Did you know just how far our area is to here? You will need to travel for a good five minutes in carriage. When you walk you will have to walk for half an hour."
They do live in the castle but not everything was accessible to them. That is the condition layed upon by the other generals when they agreed for him to be the chief. He was after all not yet the king, so the castle isn't entirely his residence yet.
He then glanced coldly at Arisa.
"Do you think I didn't notice your hands? You should have compared them with Akira. Then you will know just what type of hands are those that are used in helping the people. Yours are too delicate. Just how many times did Akira help mend your wounds?"
Arisa bit her lip upon hearing his cold voice, she then subconsciously hid her hands behind her back.
"*sneer* The power must have went up your head. You became greedy and decided that this power must remain with you."
"K- Kaoru, what are you talking about? M- My feelings for you are genuine," Arisa held his hand as teardrops started flowing from her round eyes.
Anyone who sees her would feel bad for her. That is, anyone other than Kaoru.
"Let go, before I decided to forcefully pull my hand back," Kaoru looked at her coldly as he said with the same coldness as what was flowing from his eyes.
Arisa felt scared just from his voice and eyes. She slowly let his hand go and move a few steps back, but the tears didn't stop.
"I was actually prepared to just be an adviser, I can guide you since this is your kingdom. But you just have to go and provoke me. Do you think I didn't know, that those incidents surrounding Akira was brought by you?"
A murderous glint flashed through his eyes as he look sharply at Tazuna. He couldn't help but to have a cold sweat, they knew Kaoru as the gentle person, they would never have thought that he has this side of him.
Before Tazuna could open his mouth all over again, Kaoru spoke once again, "Ah, that's right I have this as well."
Kaoru placed another parchment in the table.
In it was a survey: 'If I were to take up the challenge to be your king, would you allow me to do so?'
And seeing just how many signatures there were, it was obvious that the signatures were from the majority of the citizen.
The two months that he was staying away from Akira, he had started accumulating signatures. That is why he had also been going around the kingdom, doing his best for the people to know him and to see his genuine desire to help them.
At first the people were doubtful, someone who just came wanting to be the king. But more and more are starting to see that all his actions were genuine. He had also hinted them that he was of noble blood. This is in preparation for him to introduce himself as of royal blood from the aurora kingdom.
He had taken up small steps in preparation for this day. In order not to get that much of opposition once he brought up his real intentions.
He also had another ace up his sleeves.
Without intending to, most merchants brought up the pillars that lead the end of war. Raven and the others became popular even to this kingdom. And this fact was also equivalent to them, the Hesperian people, being alive right now.
If people were still opposed with him being the king, he could call those guys to build himself up.
"How dare you," Tazuna cursed as he look darkly at Kaoru.
Their slowly built up reputation in order for the people to trust them will crumble just like that if Kaoru were to be crowned as the king once he won the challenge.
"No, this is normal. You just didn't have the ability to be a ruler yourself. Cause if you do, the situation you are in once we arrive wouldn't have been your situation. If you just did your best as the current leader and didn't drown yourself with the power then the people would have lived a better life a month or so after the war."
Kaoru took the two parchments, "I came here as a formality of informing the current chief. I shall be posting this in the public bulletin. I'm taking up the challenge in another two days. I'm still kind with this, I am giving you time to prepare. But let me warn you."
Kaoru narrowed his eyes as his gaze became sharper, "No matter what you do I am not planning on losing to this challenge."
After everything he didn't wait for any of them to speak as he left the office. Just after the door touched the frame, Arisa went in front of her father who sat down tiredly.
"This is not what we had planned father. You told me if I acquainted myself to the people more I can become the queen. If he wins that challenge then everything was for nothing."
Tazuna massaged his temple, "Don't worry, I have researched about him already. He never used a sword before. Even if he did, he couldn't compare with the other generals of their kingdom. If he were to challenge all the current generals and captains of this kingdom, including me, then surely he would lose."
With a sneer he look up to his daughter, "That was just plainly him being arrogant and angry. He can never take up that challenge."
Looking at her confident father, Arisa calmed down and smiled arrogantly, "That's right, no matter what he do, he will be mine and mine alone."
They didn't notice that someone was actually just outside in the balcony listening to them before leaving.
That night as Kaoru was once again swinging his sword, not bothering with the mess around him. His sword swiftly went to the side where the window was.
*CLANG*
"Just as I have thought, the others worry for nothing. But how enviable, you let your sword go in more than 20 years yet just holding it for a short period of time, you can already wield it like you never stopped using it."
His visitor said as his sword was parried. Even he himself were pushed back a little by the strength Kaoru have exerted.
Shock was visible in Kaoru's eyes as he look at his visitor slash intruder who came in through the window of his room. He can't believe that this person would actually be here.
As if reading what was on his mind, "I was tasked to come here but not to reveal myself to the other people other than you."
"Raven!!"
