Pearl City had managed to survive the first wave of giant beasts!

Many cultivators lost their lives in the fight but their sacrifices allowed their families and relatives to survive.

Although they had won, no one was happy with the result, after all, this had been the first wave of several and there had already been so many casualties...

In tears, the cultivators collected the corpses of their companions and proceeded to bury them so they could rest in peace.

...

"..."

Rainer twisted in pain, his left wrist was throbbing and aching, his cultivation level and stamina were insufficient to keep the bracelet active for so long.

"Are you all right? I don't think you can endure much more..." Liann muttered after approaching Rainer.

"If I disable the summoning I will have to wait for the bracelet to recharge its energy and that could take months! We don't have that much time!" Said Rainer as he tried to withstand the pain in his body.

"You're wrong, they're the ones who don't have that much time, we don't even belong here, we're just strangers."

"You are still young, when you grow up and travel around the world, you will see things like this happening every day, will you save each person in trouble?" Asked Liann.

"I wouldn't do it, and it is impossible..." Rainer replied.

"Why are we here then?"

"..."

"You will learn an important lesson tomorrow, stay out of other people's business or you could get hurt... "Liann said as she went back to Pearl City.

Sigh...

"I won't be able to hold on much longer, I feel like my arm is going to explode... "Rainer muttered as he rode the earth dragon.

Lerna approached to him when she noticed that Rainer was suffering but she did nothing, she knew he only learned through the hard way.

...

The way back to Pearl City was a roller coaster of emotions, many cried with joy for surviving and others had dead glances as they gathered their companions's remains.

When they arrived at the city gates the citizens were there waiting anxiously for the 'good news'.

"What happened to the beasts?" Asked an old man as he recalled the terrifying screams and explosions that took place during the fight.

"They are dead..." Murmured a cultivator whose eyes had lost their brightness.

"Did you hear that? They won! We will not have to leave our belongings here and run away to start from zero!" Said the old man as he waved his arms of emotion, it seemed that he wanted to infect others with his happiness.

Gradually, the color and happiness returned to the people's faces.

"We won't have to move to another place without anything, thank goodness..." Sighed a man as he grabbed his son's palm.

"I thought my business would be ruined as soon as I opened it, but with such brave warriors defending our city, we have nothing to fear! Said a plump merchant as he groomed his mustache.

One after another, the citizens 'thanked' the cultivators for their sacrifice.

"Give your best in the next battle, we're counting on you!"

People 'encouraged' the brave warriors who fought for them.

"..."

Rainer watched as the citizens brought some food for the cultivators and then started celebrating on their own.

If someone looked at both sides of the city entrance, he would see that one side was depressed and sad while the other was smiling and celebrating, it was really ironic...

It didn't seem that a few moments ago those citizens were praying for survival while they were fighting and letting their comrades die without being able to help them...

Those who brought food and stayed were relatives of the cultivators who had survived.

Many people mourned the deaths of their relatives and collapsed on the ground while the others looked at them with pity.

Although more than a hundred cultivators fought, only 70% of them returned alive.

"Was it worth it?" The question they all had stuck in their throats was pronounced by a cultivator who severed his own arm to prevent the poison from killing him.

Everyone lowered their heads as they lost themselves in their thoughts, after the reception from the citizens for whom they shed blood to protect, they felt rage!

A strange atmosphere began to flood the cultivators as they stared at the Pearl City citizens.

"Ugh!"

Rainer was no longer able to bear the pain and suffering anymore and disabled the Irkalia's bracelet summoning.

"...!"

The citizens, who were all smiles a few moments earlier, began to shout at the disappearance of the beasts that were going to protect them!

"Where did the beasts go, Rainer?" Kradlo asked, surrounded by his family.

"This spell consumes too much energy and strength from my body, and I won't be able to cast it again for a while..." Said Rainer as he gasped for air.

"What?!"

"Summon those mighty beasts again! Without them we will be minced!"

"The city lord said you'd take care of everything! Did you lie to us?!"

"If you're a man, you must keep your word!"

One by one, people began to recriminate Rainer, he couldn't believe what was happening to him.

The people they fought for were now criticizing him!

"I worked so hard for them, even though I don't even know them... and yet..."

Anger began to squeeze Rainer's chest as he listened to the citizens' complaints.

"Shut up, you useless bastards! If it weren't for us, you would all have died tonight!" Shouted Kradlo as he formed a barrier between Rainer and the citizens.

"It is your duty to protect us! I pay my taxes!" Shouted the merchant.

"If you are paid to fight, don't complain then!" Shouted another person.

Liann looked at the scene with a smile...
