I'm Not A Good-For-Nothing

Mt Zhongnan, the greatest paradise under the sky.

It’s been said that thousands upon thousands of people shun the world and retreat to this mountain, turning to monasticism. These are people from all walks of life, and among them were some highly talented masters.

At that moment, an unshaven man stood at the foot of the mountain, in front of a burial mound without as much as a gravestone.

If a master of geomancy were here to see the layout of this graveyard, they would certainly have broken out in a cold sweat.

What kind of person would have chosen this as their resting place?

The man lowered his head and quietly spoke. “Grandfather, I’ve returned.”

His name was Qin Sheng. Twenty six years old, 180cm tall, and while not considered ‘handsome’, he was at least worth a second look.

He poured an entire bottle of ¥20 Xifeng baijiu at his grandfather’s grave. When he was alive, it was his favorite alcohol. He always had at least a bottle each day.

It had been two years. Qin Sheng left the city known as the ‘ancient capital of 13 dynasties’ two years ago. And today, he was finally able to return.

More than two years ago, he’d just graduated from university. His grandfather had passed away at the ripe old age of 89. But before he left, he repeatedly warned Qin Sheng not to return to this city for two years.

From that time, Qin Sheng followed his grandfather’s final wishes. He traveled all around the country and sought out famous sights. He would never forget the things he experienced during the past two years, all the times he made his way back from the gates of hell.

Qin Sheng cleared the weeds from the grave and said, “Grandfather, I’m returning to Shanghai tomorrow. I’ll visit you again when the new year comes. Make sure to take care of yourself.”

To be honest, he had a lot of questions he wanted to ask his grandfather. But since he’d already departed, there was no point in adding those words now.

For example, he wasn’t from Xi’an. He only knew that his grandfather brought him here when he was four, and thereafter, this is where he laid his roots. But he knew nothing of where he really came from or who his parents were.

He once asked his grandfather about it, but the man simply said that he would find out when the time was right.

After chatting awhile, Qin Sheng left.

He’d just returned but had to leave tomorrow. Still, he should see a few friends first.

After Qin Sheng left, two men, who’d been hiding behind the nearby trees, slowly walked out.

“Master, you won’t meet with him?” A tall and sturdy man with a murderous look in his eyes respectfully asked the middle-aged man beside him.

The middle-aged man was dressed in cozy, hemp garments and cloth shoes. He had a slightly bowed posture and the wrinkles on his face showed his age. The hair on his head was also going white. He didn’t respond, but he still held an aura of dignity. After looking off into the distance at Qin Sheng, he turned his gaze back to the unremarkable grave beside him.

“No, but I am curious about what kind of demon the old man raised,” the middle-aged man sneered.

Walking out to the main road from the mountain took about 20 minutes, but before Qin Sheng reached the road, he was grabbed by three unfamiliar men. And they clearly harbored ill-intentions.

“Young man, hand that over and we’ll let you go.” The leader of the group held a dagger in his hand and laughed scornfully.

“From Sichuan to Xinjiang, Xinjiang to Qinghai, and now Qinghai to Xi’an. Aren’t you guys tired of this yet?” Qin Sheng chuckled as he responded.

“Cut the crap. You know what’ll happen if you don’t.”

Qin Sheng sighed and lamented, “How many times have I said this already? I don’t have whatever it is you’re looking for from the Song family. Why won’t you believe me? Is there no trust between men?”

“Looks like we’ll have to attack,” the man said with annoyance.

Qin Sheng found this all rather boring. Instead of trying to explain any further, he simply said, “Come on then. Enough with the talk. Make your move.”

Hearing his mocking tone, the three men wasted no time in attacking Qin Sheng.

“You all think I’m a good-for-nothing?” Qin Sheng smirked. If it hadn’t been for his grandfather telling him to lay low, he would have taken care of these bum beetles ages ago.

But now that the allotted time his grandfather set had passed, there was no need to lay low anymore. After all, if you let others become accustomed to looking down on you, they’ll really start to believe that you’re a good-for-nothing wastrel.

When the first man advanced, Qin Sheng kicked his wrist and grabbed the cold, steel dagger from his hand. He stooped low to dodge the attack coming from behind and then plunged the dagger into the man’s thigh.

The other two men came forward as well. Qin Sheng calmly dodged their consecutive attacks. When he found an opening, he turned to the side and elbowed the man to his left in the chest. He’d used such force that two of the man’s ribs broke. Taking this opportunity, he then jumped and kneed the man in the side.

The man had his dagger aimed for Qin Sheng’s back, but almost as if Qin Sheng had eyes on the back of his head, he turned and avoided the attack. With swift eyes and hands, he immediately grabbed hold of the man’s wrist and stabbed him in the shoulder. Then he gave a hook punch to the other man’s chin, knocking him out. But Qin Sheng wasn’t done yet. He pulled the dagger from the man’s shoulder and thrust it once more into the man’s arm.

In just a few short minutes, the battle came to an effortless end. The three men were no longer able to fight, whereas Qin Sheng was left unscathed. They wouldn’t be threatening him again.

I’m not a good-for-nothing. Why won’t you just believe me?

“Come on then. Take out your phones,” Qin Sheng ordered with a mischievous smile.

The three heavily injured men looked at Qin Sheng with doubt in their eyes. They didn’t know what he was planning now. They hadn’t expected for him to be so strong. Didn’t they fucking say he was so weak that he couldn’t tie up a chicken? Who the fuck said that?

“Not taking them out? Forgive my manners then,” Qin Sheng scoffed. Then he personally reached for and grabbed the men’s phones.

With the phones in hand, Qin Sheng mumbled, “Damn, I’m still using an old Nokia. You’ve all got an iPhone 6s? Must be real rich, huh.”

The three men watched with astonishment as Qin Sheng threw their phones to the ground and stomped on them. “This is for fucking chasing after me. Who told you to keep chasing me?”

Qin Sheng quickly crushed the phones to scraps. The three men wanted to cry, but they couldn’t muster any tears. They were even preparing themselves for death. After all, in these deserted mountains, there was no one to save them, and they would probably end up dying from blood loss eventually.

With this matter taken care of, Qin Sheng walked off without a second thought, leaving behind three men who were giving their respects to their ancestors.
