Knock, knock, knock.

Kim's knock disrupted Carl's thought. Sliding the phone into his pocket, he opened the door.

With her brows furrowed, she began, "What's wrong?"

"Will be starting work on Monday and might not be able to go to the gym regularly. I hope you won't stop going because of that. Learn the basics, at least." He reported calmly like the situation earlier never occurred.

"Really? I thought you didn't need to go to work? But is that the reason you look pale?"

He avoided her questioning eyes as he rubbed his cheeks. "I'm just tired."

"Are you sure you're not sick?"

"I'm good. Let's go sit."

"Sure," she said, moving out of his way. She knew he wasn't telling her everything. He seemed so lost when he walked in, but she did not want to push him for answers again while it may be that she was curious.

Burned out, he sat. He chewed over the fact that he would be working for the Stans. Kim stood by the side, observing him.

Afterward, she made to sit by his side, holding his right hand. "It's going to be okay." She remarked. Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click for visiting.

Her simple words assured him. He turned to look at her, he didn't expect her to be understanding. Of course, he was grateful for it, it's just not her style to be so comforting when she was curious. He thought she would nag him about his sour mood.

Concurrently, he brightened up, "Yeah, it's going to be."

On Monday morning, while Kim walked to the gym, Carl drove to his former place of work he assumed he wouldn't return to.

Arriving at the office he was asked to head up to the CEO's office which he complied with.

After knocking three times on the door, he stepped into the office.

"Good morning, boss." He greeted in a subservient manner.

Chamberlain who was standing by the floor length window, swiveled. His eyes met Carl's and they lingered a few seconds more than necessary. Carl wasn't really paying attention so he did not notice.

"You look smart," he said, taking a seat.

"Thank you."

"That's right, you won't be staying in your former cubicle. You've moved up a few floors. Not too far from me, so I can keep an eye on you." Explained Chamberlain. While he spoke, his eyes took in every little action Carl made.

"You'll stay just outside the door. Your first job is pretty easy, something you've done for yourself so it should be pretty easy for you."

"You might want to tell "your lady" that you'll be working late from now on." He added.

Was there really a need for supervision? Must he be just outside his office? Would he then have to see the despicable man everyday?

Of course these questions were Carl's. Directed at no one but himself.

"Yes sir." He answered in a neutral voice with no sign of resistance.

Chamberlain wondered if he would continue being so submissive or it was just a front. Either way, he would be able to tame him, if need be.

"That would be all." He watched Carl leave his office then sat at his desk, at the same time, he chuckled.

He found it funny how people would do anything for the people they love, including lowering their head.

He didn't feel that way about anyone, his immediate family may be an exception but that can only be verified if he was threatened with their lives on the line.

Carl, oblivious to Chamberlain's strange gazes, opened the document on his desk to begin working.

That's how he comforted himself, he only needed to work and they would let him be. They may be kind enough to let him go in the future or he may as well grow his power to trump them. Whatever the case may be, he could only do his work perfectly and bide his time.

On the other side of the State B, a man sat in a dark room, staring into oblivion when he heard someone call out to him.

"Boss, about the Stans, what are your plans?"

The seemingly distracted man focused when he heard the name.

"Leave them be for now." He replied casually.

"But sir, they are making a mess of everything." The subordinate countered.

"Keep watching them but do nothing." He maintained his stance.

"Sir, they are foiling your plans, why don't we give them a little warning to stop them from running amok on our turf?" He continued to persuade.

His actions garnered him a sneer from the boss. Subsequently, he held back his thoughts.

"Do you think I should let you be in charge?" He questioned his subordinate. His words unrushed, like a passing remark. Notwithstanding, his subordinate was shaken.

"How can that be boss?" He palcated.

The man who was sat, closed his eyes. The subordinate took it as a sign to leave. Thanking the gods for the second chance they granted him.
